Work Text:
Once there was a boy, swift as the wind.
He loved his sister, and kept her close, and protected her, just as she protected him.
Well, not quite the same, since her power was of the mind and the heart, bringing fears to the fore and moving the world to keep him safe.
They had gained their powers after a missile had blown up their building, killing their parents and trapping them in rubble, leaving them trapped with a second missile less than a yard away.
A man had come, told them he needed subjects for a test that would make them strong (if it worked).
They said yes.
He thought of speed, and strength, and a way to save everyone he loved.
She thought of bringing people under her control, and moving things out of her path.
Together, they were unstoppable.
But the man (the archer) who'd first injured the speedster's sister, then trusted her - saying she could be one of them - was in danger, and the boy decided to save the archer, and the boy in his arms, even as bullets ripped through his flesh.
And he told the man “Didn't see that coming”, and tried to tell his sister to hold onto life, and then he slipped away.
And that was the end.
