Work Text:
Since Lucy broke up with her a couple of weeks ago, Angela has had trouble coping. She’s upset with herself for lying to Lucy in order to protect Tim, but Tim is her best friend.
Now Angela lies awake, staring up at the ceiling, Wesley fast asleep beside her. Guilt gnaws at her conscience like a relentless predator, threatening to consume her from within. On one hand, she feels the weight of regret pressing down upon her, a heavy burden born of the knowledge that her actions have brought about the demise of the second most precious relationship in her life.
But on the other hand, there's a stubborn defiance that rises within her, a steadfast belief that she did what she had to do to protect those she loves. Tim's secrets, while burdensome and fraught with consequences, were born out of desperation, out of a need to protect those closest to him. In choosing to shield Lucy from the dangers lurking in the shadows, Angela had made a choice she felt was necessary, even if it meant sacrificing her happiness in the process.
And yet, despite the conviction that burns within her, a hollow ache lingers in the depths of her soul. She's not upset that she chose to protect her girlfriend; in fact, she knows deep down that it was the right decision. In protecting Lucy from harm, she's inadvertently brought about the very thing she sought to prevent: their separation.
Angela lies in the dimly lit bedroom, the night stretching out before her like an endless expanse of uncertainty. The soft rhythm of her husband's snores fills the room, a solitary beacon of sound in the otherwise quiet night. She tries to find solace in his embrace, seeking refuge from the storm of guilt within her, but even the warmth of his arms fails to quiet the war in her heart.
As she lies there, lost in the labyrinth of her own thoughts, Wesley's voice cuts through the silence. "Ange? What's wrong?" he whispers, his words tinged with concern and fatigue.
Angela hesitates, her mind racing as she grapples with the weight of her emotions. "Nothing, go to sleep," she murmurs in response, her voice barely above a whisper.
But Wesley refuses to relent, his hand gently brushing against her hair as he seeks to comfort her. She revels in the sensation, finding a fleeting moment of peace in his touch.
They sit in silence for a moment, the only sound the soft rustle of their breath mingling in the stillness of the night. Angela finds herself drawn to the warmth of his presence, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat a reassuring anchor in the tempest of her mind.
And then, just as she begins to relax into the embrace of the night, Wesley's voice breaks through the quiet once more. "Is this about Lucy?" he asks, his words hanging heavy in the air between them.
Angela swallows hard, the lump in her throat betraying the turmoil churning within her. "I really don't want to talk about this right now," she whispers, her voice barely audible in the quiet of the night.
But despite her reluctance, Wesley presses on, his words gentle yet firm. "I get why you did it," he says, his voice a soothing presence in the darkness. "Leaving her in the dark to protect her. I get that you'll probably never regret protecting her. But Ange, you have to realize she's had people making decisions for her her entire life. You have to understand her anger."
Angela's breath catches in her chest at Wesley's words, the truth of his observations cutting through her defenses like a knife. "That's the problem," she sighs, her voice heavy with resignation. "That I understand her anger. Because if I was her, I'd never forgive me either."
Wesley shrugs, a gesture of understanding that speaks volumes in the quiet of the night. "But you aren't her," he offers softly, his voice a beacon of reassurance in the darkness. "You two need to have a serious talk. Please. If not for you, then for my sleep."
Angela can't help but laugh lightly at his words, the sound a balm to her troubled soul. "You are the best husband, you know that?" she whispers, her voice filled with gratitude.
"Of course, I am," Wesley teases, his tone playful despite the gravity of their conversation. "How many husbands would be giving their wives advice on how to deal with their girlfriend?"
Angela laughs, the sound ringing out in the stillness of the night. She finds a glimmer of hope. Tomorrow, she and Lucy will have a real conversation, one born out of honesty and understanding. Angela isn't giving up without a fight.
|~| The next day |~|
The next day dawned with a sense of tense anticipation, the weight of unresolved tensions lingering in the air like a heavy fog. Angela had spent the day immersed in work, with Nyla on a case that demanded their full attention. Despite the urgency of their task, Angela couldn't shake the nagging sense of unease that had settled in the pit of her stomach ever since her conversation with Wesley the night before.
It wasn't until later in the day, amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy hospital, that Angela's path crossed with Lucy's once again. She watched silently as Lucy approached them, her demeanor guarded and distant, a stark contrast to the warmth and familiarity they had once shared.
"Hey," Nyla spoke first, breaking the uneasy silence that hung between them. "Thanks for getting here so quickly."
Lucy nodded curtly, her gaze fixed anywhere but on Angela. "Yeah, of course. What do you got for me?" she asked, her voice tinged with professionalism as she focused on the task at hand.
Nyla wasted no time in explaining the situation, detailing the urgency of their need to keep a suspect under close surveillance. "You can count on me," Lucy affirmed, her resolve evident despite the tension that crackled in the air.
Before Nyla could say more, Officer Jan approached his presence a brief interruption in their conversation. "Detective, your witness is awake," he informed Nyla, who nodded in acknowledgment.
"Okay, Luce, call me if you need anything," Nyla instructed before turning her attention to Angela. "I'll go interview our witness and meet you out front?"
Angela nodded in agreement, her expression unreadable as she watched Nyla depart. "Sounds good," she replied softly.
Angela and Lucy found themselves alone for the first time since their breakup, the weight of their fractured relationship hanging heavy in the air between them. Angela took a moment to really observe Lucy, noticing the dark circles under her eyes and the rigid posture that spoke volumes of the inner turmoil she was undoubtedly facing.
"Hey," Angela said softly, her voice a gentle attempt to bridge the gap that had formed between them.
For the first time in a while, Lucy looked up at Angela, her gaze guarded and distant. "Hello, Detective," she responded with a professional tone that cut through the silence like a knife. Angela felt a pang of hurt at the formality, but she pushed it aside, determined to make amends.
"Hey, when you get the chance, I'd like to talk with you—" Angela began, but Lucy cut her off with a shake of her head.
"I'm sorry, Detective Lopez, unless you have anything to say to me about the case, I should get going," Lucy replied curtly, her words laced with an unfamiliar coldness that sent a shiver down Angela's spine.
"Okay, I understand," Angela conceded, masking her disappointment behind a facade of understanding.
Lucy gave her one last glance before retreating into the safety of her emotions. Angela watched her go, a sense of longing and determination stirring. Lucy was worth fighting for, and Angela would keep trying, no matter how daunting the task seemed. Because deep down, she knew their bond was worth the effort it would take to mend.
|~| A couple weeks later |~|
Angela found herself at a loss, the weight of their fractured relationship pressing down on her with each passing day. Despite her best efforts, she struggled to bridge the growing distance that had formed between her and Lucy. Over the last couple of weeks, she had hardly managed to get Lucy to even speak with her outside of work-related matters, and the distance between them felt insurmountable.
It frustrated Angela to no end that the woman she loved seemed so far out of reach. She knew Lucy was going through a lot, grappling with the fallout of their breakup and the upheaval in her personal life. And yet, Angela couldn't shake the gnawing ache of longing that consumed her, a desperate yearning to be there for Lucy in her time of need.
The news of Tamara's moving from Lucy's apartment only added to Angela's sense of frustration and helplessness. The fact that Lucy had thrown a going-away party and neither Angela nor Tim had been invited stung like a fresh wound. Even Celina, a rookie, had received an invitation, a fact that only served to deepen Angela's sense of exclusion.
What troubled Angela, even more, was the growing realization that Lucy seemed to be gravitating towards Celina in her absence. Wherever Lucy went, Celina was right beside her, a constant presence that Angela couldn't ignore. They seemed to be spending more and more time together, riding together on patrols and sharing moments that Angela couldn't help but feel excluded from.
As Angela grappled with the growing rift between them, she couldn't help but wonder if their bond was slipping further and further out of her grasp. And with each passing day, the fear of losing Lucy for good loomed ever larger in Angela's heart.
As Nyla extended the invitation for lunch at the food trucks, Angela couldn't help but notice the moment of hesitation flicker across Lucy's eyes. It was a fleeting glimpse of vulnerability, quickly masked by a forced agreement. Angela felt a pang of sadness at the distance between them, but she pushed it aside, determined to make the most of this rare opportunity for alone time.
Throughout the lunch outing, Angela couldn't shake the feeling of Lucy's discomfort, a tangible tension that hung in the air between them like a heavy cloud. Lucy kept her gaze averted, her body language closed off and guarded, and Angela's heart ached at the sight.
Their moment of alone time finally came when Nyla and Celina stood to grab their food, leaving Angela and Lucy momentarily alone. The silence stretched between them, pregnant with unspoken words and unresolved emotions.
"So," Angela began softly, breaking the tension with carefully chosen words. "I heard that you were rooming with Celina now."
Lucy looked up, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes at Angela's knowledge. She hadn't shared this detail with anyone, but she hadn't exactly been hiding it either. "Yeah," she admitted reluctantly, her voice tinged with a mixture of resignation and loneliness. "It's gotten pretty lonely there with Tamara gone."
Angela nodded in understanding, the weight of Lucy's words settling heavily on her shoulders. "I heard the party was fun," she remarked casually, hoping to steer the conversation away from the awkwardness that threatened to engulf them.
Lucy nodded hesitantly, her gaze fixed on the ground as she wrestled with her own conflicting emotions. "Yeah, it was great. Tamara had fun," she replied softly, her voice tinged with a hint of melancholy.
Angela's smile was genuine as she responded, "Good, I'm glad. She deserves it."
"Yeah, she does," Lucy agreed, her tone tinged with a mixture of guilt and sadness. She hesitated for a moment before meeting Angela's eyes, her expression troubled. "I'm sorry I didn't invite you. I know how important Tamara became to you," she admitted softly.
Angela's response was immediate, a reassurance born out of understanding and empathy. "Lucy, you don't have to apologize. I understand," she insisted, her voice gentle yet firm.
But Lucy's shoulders slumped in resignation, her apology lingering in the air between them like a heavyweight. "Still, I'm sorry," she murmured, her words laden with unspoken regret.
A heavy silence descended upon them once more, the weight of their unresolved tensions hanging palpably in the air. Angela felt a question gnawing at her insides, a question she knew she had no right to ask but couldn't ignore. She knew she had to tread carefully, but she couldn't bear to live in uncertainty any longer.
"Are you and Celina..." Angela's voice trailed off, her words faltering as she struggled to find the right words. Lucy looked up, her eyebrow raised inquisitively, waiting for Angela to continue.
"What? Are Celina and I what?" she prompted, her expression unreadable.
Angela swallowed hard, steeling herself for the inevitable response. "I know I have no right to ask, but are you two seeing each other?" she finally managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lucy's initial reaction to Angela's question was one of genuine surprise. She had never even entertained the possibility that anyone, least of all Angela, would think that there was something romantic between her and Celina. In Lucy's mind, Celina was a trusted friend, a confidante she had grown close to. Probably her closest friend since Jackson. She represented a lifeline amidst the tumult of her fractured relationships with Tim and Angela, a steady presence in a sea of uncertainty.
As Angela's question hung in the air between them, Lucy felt a surge of indignation rise within her. How could Angela even suggest such a thing? The very idea seemed ludicrous.
In truth, Lucy's heart still belonged to Tim and Angela, despite the anger and hurt that had driven a wedge between them. She couldn't fathom the notion of moving on so quickly, not when her love for them still burned brightly within her.
With a soft shake of her head, Lucy finally found her voice. "No, Celina and I aren't together. We never will be together, because there is no replacing you," she stated firmly, her words a declaration of her unwavering commitment to the people she loved. Despite the tumultuous waters they navigated, one thing remained constant: her love for Tim and Angela. And nothing, not even the uncertainty of their fractured relationship, could ever change that.
As Lucy's words washed over her, Angela felt a weight lift from her shoulders, a sense of relief flooding her like a breath of fresh air. The pressure that had been crushing her chest eased, and she felt like she could finally breathe again. Despite the mistakes she had made, despite the hurt she had caused, she still loved Lucy with every fiber of her being. And now, with Lucy's affirmation of her feelings, Angela allowed herself to hope, to dare to believe that maybe, just maybe, they could find their way back to each other.
"I know I have no right to ask," Angela began, her voice soft yet resolute, "and you have every right to be with whoever you want to be with. But Lucy, nothing is ever going to stop me from caring about you."
As tears welled in Lucy's eyes, Angela's heart clenched with a mixture of guilt and longing. She knew she had hurt Lucy deeply, and she couldn't help but feel the weight of that pain bearing down on her. But even amidst the sorrow, there was a glimmer of hope, a flicker of possibility that danced in the depths of Lucy's tear-filled gaze.
"Angela, of course, I love you," Lucy breathed, her words a balm to Angela's wounded soul. "I still care about you... but you hurt me," she added softly, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness.
Angela nodded in understanding, her own heart heavy with regret. She knew she had messed up, and she knew that Lucy needed time to heal, to rebuild the trust that had been shattered between them. "I still love you," Lucy reiterated, her words a gentle reminder of the bond they shared.
"I love you too," Angela whispered, reaching out to wipe away the tears that glistened on Lucy's cheeks. It wasn't easy for Lucy to put space between them, Angela knew, but she also knew it was necessary if they ever wanted to find their way back to each other.
A moment of silence passed between them, pregnant with unspoken emotions and the promise of a new beginning. And then, breaking the quiet, Lucy spoke again, her voice soft yet determined. "My birthday is in a month."
"I know, I remember," Angela replied with a small smile, her heart fluttering at the prospect of being able to celebrate with Lucy once more.
"If I asked you to meet me for dinner, would you come?" Lucy asked tentatively, her eyes searching Angela's face for any sign of hesitation.
Angela's heartbeat quickened at the hopeful look in Lucy's eyes, but she nodded without hesitation. "Just name the time and place, and I'll be there," she promised, her voice filled with determination.
A smile spread across Lucy's face, lighting up her features with a radiance that warmed Angela's heart. "Good," she said softly. "I can't wait."
"Me either," Angela replied, her own smile mirroring Lucy's. Things weren't perfect, not by a long shot, but for the first time in weeks, Angela had hope. And in that hope, she found the strength to believe that maybe, just maybe, they could find their way back to each other once more.
