Chapter Text
Elbows draped over the railing of the balcony, Veronica looked over the beach from their hotel room. In town for Piz’s cousin’s wedding, Veronica knew she hadn’t exactly been a good sport about the whole thing. Her intentions were to beg out of it, get a few days on the east coast to herself but… The opportunity to see her dad for lunch a day or two convinced her to make a little effort. As the sun crept over the horizon, Veronica chided herself. She was supposed to be in bed, hours ago; she hoped the waves had been quietly lapping her into enough peace to sleep. Downing the last of her last whiskey, Veronica let the cool early morning breeze carry her back in the room.
“Sorry,” she whispered, wincing as she tripped over a corner of the bed, knocking Piz awake sooner than she expected to face him.
“Still up?” Piz kept his eyes closed, waiting for her warmth to crawl next to him, but Veronica let silence lull him back to sleep.
Following the glow of the bathroom nightlight, Veronica sighed. Palms flat against the cool of the bathroom sink, she collected herself, steadied herself. The west coast always called her home, but the comfort rang hollow, a bittersweet trick of nostalgia after anything more than a long weekend. Then she started feeling some of the old feelings, only sourer somehow.
“Just a few more days,” she nodded to herself in the mirror.
