A Family in all Shapes and Sizes

Summary:

After several months of being fostered and thrown back into the system, Rin has started to lose hope of getting a happy and warm family that she'd wanted for her and her brother.
In spite of her violent records and how "difficult" both twins are to raise, another family has offered to foster them.
Deciding to take one last chance, Rin and Len are now on a car ride to their next foster home, not knowing a huge change will occur in their life.

Chapter Text

The ride was slow, Rin thought, as she watched the trees outside fly past.

Just like every two months, her and her brother were moving houses again. The last house wasn’t bad, but the people who were meant to be taking care of them mostly neglected them, only giving them their portions of food with minimal interaction. It wasn’t necessarily abusive, but it still wasn't a satisfying result, or remotely close to what a family should be like.

"I feel bad for Gumi-san," the blonde heard her brother mutter once, and she could be inclined to agree. As much as their social worker wants to adopt them and take care of them, both her and her husband have their hands full, with two children. Even if they wanted to, they couldn't afford two more, and Rin would never let anyone hear the end of it if she was separated from her brother.

She couldn’t ever be angry with Gumi because of her situation, but it was irritating her to no end that with every home she and Len went, they started to pack less and less. The only item they frequently brought with them when they were sent from home to home is Len's lemon plushie; something that he holds dear, as it was given to him by their birth parents Meiko and Kaito. Since they lived near the outskirts of the human land and couldn't afford to move because they were on a tight budget, they were killed by giants.

By some sort of miracle, the twins were spared, but their parents met their end in order to sacrifice themselves for their kids’ precious lives.

This trauma has left Rin with an undying hatred for giants. Len, on the other hand, developed a fear. Many of their foster families, specifically the shittier ones, have weaponized it in an attempt to manipulate and harm Len. This, obviously, caused Rin to get physical with them. After she saves her brother from these evil people, the twins get sent back to the system. Once again, they wait for another family. At this point, Rin’s just waiting until she and Len turn 18 so that they can be free.

Rin can’t help but be confused on why a family still wants to adopt them, considering her somewhat violent record, and Len's tendency to hide in not so comfortable places (he ended up in a washing machine once after getting scared).

Somewhere along the car ride, as Len slept soundly hugging his little lemon, she had noticed Gumi being quite tense, more so than usual. Usually, she’d keep a straight face as she drove both twins down to their inevitably temporary home, but this time she seemed a bit stiffer. This worried Rin, so she called out to the driver of the car. "Hey, Gumi-san? Where exactly are we going?”

The older woman tensed again. Silence filled the car, before Gumi cut through it with her next statement.

"You two... are going to a giant's house."

They are going to a what's house.
