Chapter 1: A Fateful Meeting(Dan Heng POV)

Chapter Text

"Shit" I whispered under my breath, my car was being weird and I was late to my meeting with my editor, I quickly called my editor Welt, "hey Mr. Yang? Yeah I won't be able to come to our meeting"
"What? Why?" He thankfully sounded more concerned than angry,
"My car isn't starting, I'll call a mechanic don't worry"
"Okay, we'll reschedule"
"Sounds good" I hung up before looking up local mechanics near me, there was one that was relatively cheap and I called it, "hello?"
"Howdy! Thanks for calling Ranger Repair, how can I help?" The man on the other end had a thick country accent,
"My car won't start, I have no idea what's going on"
"Well that sounds like an easy fix, what's your address I'll be there soon" I gave the man my address and hung up. A few minutes later a van with the words "Ranger Repair" pulled up in front of my house and a man with long hair wearing a cowboy outfit came out with a tool box. He came over and shook my hand, "the names Boothill, what's yours?"
"Dan Heng, my car is over here" I open my garage door and show him my old kinda beat up little car, he chuckled
"What do you do for work?" He looks around my car
"I'm a writer and I missed a meeting with my editor because of my stupid car" I take a deep breath as Boothill opens the hood.
"A writer huh? What have you written?"
"My main series is The Life of a Trailblazer" Boothill looked at me kinda shocked, "what?"
"Well I'll be, my daughter loves those books, I'll have to tell her I met you" I smiled a little
"Oh really? I can give you an autograph for her"
"Oh she would love that! Coincidentally it's her birthday in a few days!" I go grab a piece of paper and a pen from inside my car
"Really? How old is she turning?"
"six" he smiles "I adopted her a few years ago and it was the best decision I ever made" I nod as I write my signature on the paper and hand it to Boothill, "thanks, I did find out what's up with your car, it's a easy fix don't worry" he puts my signature into his pocket and grabs some tools
"I can go get you some lunch if you'd like, it is noon after all" he chuckles
"Nah it's fine I'm gonna eat right after this job anyway" I nod as I head into my house. It was pretty hot out and I didn't want him to die of heatstroke in my garage so I grabbed a bottle of water from my fridge and headed back to where Boothill was working on my car,
"Here" I hand him the water and his eyes light up
"Oh thank you! I forgot my water bottle at the workshop like a idiot" he chuckles as he takes the bottle and chugs it "ah that's definitely what I needed" he handed the empty water bottle to me "this should be done in a minute, you can stay and watch if you want" he kneels down and starts to tinker with my car, I decided to lean against the wall and watch him. After a minute he stood up and closed the hood "go ahead and try turning it on" I nod as I hop into my car and turn the key, I was shocked when it actually started working
"Wow that's amazing" I get out and hand Boothill a hundred dollar bill, "here"
"Oh I don't have change on me, this job is only seventy"
"Keep the extra" Boothill chuckles after I say that
"Is this why you still have an old beat up car?" I glare at him because of his snarky remark
"Do you want the extra thirty or not?"
"Thank you" he chuckles again before packing up his tools and walking to his van.
