Work Text:
The mission was over. The team had returned, battered and bruised but victorious. Tony Stark, clad in his Iron Man suit, felt a simmering anger bubbling beneath his skin as he glanced around at his teammates. Steve was talking to Natasha, Bruce looked lost in thought, as if weighing the balance between his two identities, while Thor stood tall and majestic, his Asgardian armor reflecting the soft lights of the Avengers Tower.
But it was Clint Barton who held Tony's attention. The archer, looking far too nonchalant for someone who had narrowly escaped death, was adjusting the quiver on his back. The memory of Clint dangling precariously from a collapsing building flashed through Tony's mind, sending a surge of panic and anger coursing through him.
They gathered in the Avengers debrief room, where Fury awaited them. The tension in the air was palpable as each Avenger reported on their part of the mission. Tony stayed silent, his jaw clenched, his mind replaying the moment when Clint's harness had snapped, leaving him to freefall before Tony could swoop in to save him.
"Stark, you have anything to add?" Fury's voice cut through Tony's thoughts.
Tony shook his head. "Nope, all good on my end." He didn't trust himself to say more without his anger spilling over.
Fury gave him a sharp look but moved on. The debriefing wrapped up quickly, and Fury dismissed them with a nod. "Get some rest."
The team shuffled out of the room, but Tony lingered, his gaze fixed on Clint. As the archer made his way towards the elevator, Tony turned sharply and headed for his workshop. He needed space, needed to think, needed to calm the storm raging inside him.
Hours passed. The tower was quiet, the rest of the team scattered to their respective corners. Tony busied himself with his suits, tinkering and modifying, anything to keep his mind off the gnawing fear that had taken root in his chest.
"Tony?" Clint's voice broke the silence, and Tony stiffened. He didn't turn around, pretending to be engrossed in his work.
"Not now, Barton," Tony replied, his voice clipped.
Clint didn't take the hint. He walked further into the lab, his footsteps echoing. "What's going on? You've been avoiding me since we got back."
Tony's hands stilled, and he took a deep breath before turning to face Clint. "Avoiding you? I've been busy. You know, saving the world, fixing suits. The usual."
Clint frowned, his eyes narrowing. "Rubbish,Tony. What's really going on?"
Tony felt the anger he'd been holding back rise to the surface. "What's going on? You nearly died out there, Clint! You think that's nothing? You think I can just brush that off?"
Clint looked taken aback. "Tony, it's part of the job. We all take risks."
"Yeah, but you didn't have to take that one!" Tony shouted, his voice cracking. "You could've waited for backup, could've called for help. But no, you had to play the hero and nearly got yourself killed!"
By now, the rest of the team had gathered at the entrance of the worksho[, drawn by the raised voices. Natasha, Bruce, Steve, and Thor watched in stunned silence as Tony's emotions spilled over.
Clint took a step forward, his expression softening. "Tony, I didn't mean to scare you. I just did what I thought was right."
"Scare me? Scare me?" Tony's hands were shaking now, his fists clenched. "You think this is about being scared? I can't lose you, Clint. You're my best friend. Do you have any idea what that means?"
The room fell silent, the weight of Tony's words hanging in the air. Natasha's eyes widened in surprise, and Steve exchanged a bewildered glance with Bruce. Thor looked solemn, his gaze fixed on Tony.
Clint seemed at a loss for words. He stepped closer, reaching out to place a hand on Tony's shoulder. "Tones, I'm sorry. I didn't know."
Tony swallowed hard, his anger ebbing away, replaced by the raw vulnerability he rarely showed. "Just… don't do that again. Don't make me watch you fall."
Clint pulled Tony into a hug, and for a moment, Tony stiffened before he relaxed into it, the tension draining from his body. "I won't leave you, Tony. I promise."
The rest of the team looked on, a mix of confusion and understanding on their faces. Natasha was the first to speak, her voice soft. "We all need to look out for each other. We're a team."
Steve nodded. "She's right. We're stronger together."
Bruce added, "And we all have people who care about us. We need to remember that."
Thor's deep voice rumbled through the room. "Aye, we are more than just warriors. We are friends, bound by more than just duty."
Tony finally pulled back from the hug, giving Clint a small, grateful smile. "Just… be more careful, okay?"
Clint nodded. "Okay, Tones. I will."
As the team began to disperse, the atmosphere in the tower felt lighter. The unspoken bonds between them had been reaffirmed, and Tony knew that despite the dangers they faced, they would face them together.
And that, in the end, was what truly mattered.
---
The evening settled over the Avengers Tower like a comforting blanket. The city's lights twinkled outside the expansive windows, casting a serene glow across the common room where the team had gathered. Tony, for once, had allowed himself to relax, a glass of whiskey in hand as he sat on the couch.
Clint, still reeling from the intensity of Tony's outburst, took a seat beside him. "You know, Tony, for a genius, you can be pretty dense sometimes."
Tony raised an eyebrow, taking a sip of his drink. "Oh really? And why's that?"
Clint smirked, though there was a warmth in his eyes. "You care about us. More than you let on. We all see it, even if you try to hide it behind that snarky exterior."
Tony sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, well, maybe I just care too much. Losing anyone on this team… it's not an option for me."
Natasha, who had been listening from a nearby armchair, chimed in. "We're all scared of losing each other, Tony. But that's what makes us fight harder. We protect each other."
Steve nodded in agreement. "We're family. We stick together, no matter what."
Bruce added, "And we all have our ways of showing it. Some more... expressive than others."
Thor, who had been munching on a plate of snacks, raised his glass. "To friendship, and the bonds that hold us together. May they never be broken."
Tony glanced around at his teammates, feeling a swell of gratitude and affection. "To friendship," he echoed, raising his glass. The others joined in, their voices mingling in a chorus of camaraderie.
As the night wore on, the team fell into easy conversation, the tension from earlier dissipating like mist in the morning sun. Stories were shared, jokes were told, and laughter filled the room. It was in these moments that Tony felt the true strength of the Avengers – not just in their abilities or their victories, but in their unwavering support for one another.
Later, as the team began to drift off to their rooms, Tony found himself alone with Clint once more. They stood by the large window, looking out over the city they had sworn to protect.
"Hey, Tones," Clint said quietly. "Thanks for caring."
Tony smiled, a genuine, heartfelt smile. "Anytime, Clint. Anytime."
Clint chuckled softly. "Just don't go all soft on me, okay? I need you to keep me on my toes."
Tony rolled his eyes. "Oh, don't worry. I'll still be a pain in your ass. That's a promise."
With that, they shared a companionable silence, the city lights reflecting in their eyes. The unspoken understanding between them was stronger than ever, a testament to the bond they shared.
And as Tony Stark stood beside Clint Barton, he knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. Because in the end, it wasn't just about being heroes. It was about being friends, and that was the greatest strength of all.
The next morning, the sun rose over the Avengers Tower, casting a warm glow through the windows. Tony was already up, working in his lab, when Clint strolled in, a cup of coffee in each hand.
"Morning, Tones," Clint greeted, handing one of the cups to Tony.
Tony accepted it with a nod. "Morning. Sleep well?"
Clint shrugged. "As well as can be expected. You?"
Tony smirked. "Do I ever sleep well?"
They shared a brief laugh before falling into a comfortable silence, sipping their coffee. The events of the previous day still lingered, but there was a new sense of understanding between them.
"So," Clint began, leaning against the workbench, "What's on the agenda for today?"
Tony set his cup down, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "I've got a few upgrades in mind for your gear. Can't have you falling off buildings again."
Clint raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What kind of upgrades?"
Tony's smirk widened. "You'll see. Trust me, you're gonna love it."
As they delved into their work, the rest of the team went about their morning routines.
Natasha and Steve sparred in the training room, their movements fluid and precise. Bruce meditated in his white room, finding a rare moment of peace. Thor, ever the early riser, was already out on the balcony, greeting the day with his usual exuberance.
The tower was alive with activity, each member contributing in their own way. Despite their differences, their bond was unbreakable, forged in the fires of countless battles and strengthened by the trust they had in one another.
In the days that followed, the team continued to train and prepare for whatever threats might come their way. The memory of Clint's near-death experience lingered, a reminder of the dangers they faced. But it also served as a catalyst, bringing them closer together.
Tony and Clint's friendship grew even stronger, their banter a constant source of amusement for the team. Natasha and Steve found new ways to push each other to their limits, their competitive spirits driving them forward. Bruce and Thor developed an unlikely camaraderie, their conversations ranging from science to Asgardian lore.
And through it all, they never forgot the promise they had made to each other: to protect and support one another, no matter the cost.
One evening, as the sun set over the city, the team gathered once more in the common room. This time, there was no tension, no lingering anger. Just a group of friends, sharing a moment of peace.
Tony looked around at his teammates, feeling a deep sense of contentment. "You know," he said, raising his glass, "I don't say this often, but… I'm glad to have you guys."
Clint grinned. "Even me?"
Tony chuckled. "Especially you, Birdbrain. Just try not to make a habit of scaring me, okay?"
Clint laughed. "No promises, Tones. But I'll do my best."
As they clinked their glasses together, the future seemed a little less daunting. They knew there would be challenges ahead, but they also knew they would face them together.
Because in the end, they were more than just a team. They were family.
