Work Text:

“You know, it gets a bit boring just sitting here and waiting.” Buck said as he turned to look at Eddie, who was propped up next to him on the front of the engine. Eddie just grunted out an agreement as he pulled his sunglasses over his eyes and crossed his arms across his chest.

The 118 had been called out as the assistance on a S.W.A.T. call to provide any medical assistance that could possibly be needed. They sat back and waited from afar as the members of the S.W.A.T. team geared up and prepared themselves for the event that was upcoming.

A flurry of activity and yelling occurred as the S.W.A.T. team breached the building in question for the suspect they were searching for. At this, Buck and Eddie prepared themselves to direct anyone who needed to be checked over to Hen and Chimney, who were sitting in the back of the ambulance waiting.

“Just this one needs to be checked over.” The leader of the S.W.A.T. team said as he walked over, holding a man by the elbow. “It’s just a scratch Roper, I’m fine!” The man exclaimed as he moved his arm, revealing a large gash down his forearm. “Tell me that when you aren’t bleeding Kinard. Get in there so they can check you out.” Roper walked away, leaving the man, Kinard, standing there with Buck and Eddie. “I’ll walk him back. Eddie, you go start packing up.”

“Got you one with a gash to the forearm. Only one that needs to be checked out.” Buck informed Hen and Chim as Kinard climbed into the ambulance and sat down. “I’ll be fine. I’ve had much worse than a cut to the arm on these things.” Kinard grumbled as Hen began to clean the wound.

Buck had to admit, as he sat on the edge of the ambulance and watched, that Kinard was a good looking man. As big of a man as Buck was, Kinard was bigger. Sure, the two men were the same height from what he could tell, but Kinard was built like a brick wall. Would take an awful lot of….anything to make that man budge from what he was doing.

No wonder this was the career he had gone into.

As Buck snapped back to reality, he noticed that Kinard was staring at him, so Buck’s eyes snapped away from where they had been watching Kinard. A red blush appeared on Buck’s cheeks, so he hopped off the back of the ambulance and moved to the side to wait. “Good to go. Leave those bandages on for a while just to be sure though.” Hen told Kinard, who promptly nodded and jumped out of the back of the truck, uttering a thanks as he did so.

“Tommy Kinard.”

Buck looked up to see Kinard - Tommy - standing there in front of him, a hand extended outward. Taking it and shaking it, Buck replied with, “Evan Buckley.” Tommy had a smirk on his face as he released Buck’s hand, his eyes taking in Buck for the first time. “Well Evan, I’m sure I’ll be seeing you around some more. Perhaps the gala event tomorrow night?” Tommy cocked an eyebrow at Buck, who just nodded his head. “Ye-yeah. I’ll be there. Maybe we’ll see one another then Tommy.” Tommy just nodded as he turned to walk away. “Oh I’m quite sure we’ll be seeing one another, if I have my way that is.”

Climbing into the engine and taking his seat, Buck was met with a nudge from Eddie. “What was going on out there?” He asked, a teasing tone lacing his words. The red blush returned to Buck’s cheeks as he turned to look out the window, Eddie barking out a laugh next to him. “We’ll talk about this at a later time then, Buck.”

“You know, for someone who hates events like this, you seem extremely eager to be here.” Eddie teased as he and Buck sat at a table, chatting. “It doesn’t have to do with a certain S.W.A.T. member from yesterday, does it?” A red blush covered Buck’s cheeks (more so than had already been there from the alcohol) and he took a sip from the champagne flute that was resting next to him on the table.

“I mean, he was kinda cute.” Buck said, trying to will his blush to fade away as he spoke. His eyes had been tracing the room every few minutes trying to find the man who went by the name of Tommy Kinard, but had yet to spot him.

Maybe it was a sign that this crush would never be anything more than a crush on someone he had met on a call.

Hell, after his last relationship with Taylor Kelly had fallen apart, he had stepped back from the dating world. It had thrown him for a loop and honestly, he wasn’t willing to go through anything like that again because the love or whatever it was between him and Taylor just hadn’t been worth all the pain that he felt deep down.

“Evan Buckley, I see you did make it tonight.”

Snapping back to reality, Buck turned around and saw Tommy Kinard standing there, a smirk pulling at his lips. “I told you I would be here, didn’t I?” An eyebrow raised as Buck spoke, pulling a chuckle from Tommy’s lips. “That you did, that you did.” A silence fell between the two, only being broken by Tommy speaking up once more. “How about we go for a walk?” Draining the last of his champagne, Buck nodded before standing and following after Tommy as Eddie stayed at the table, chuckling to himself as he watched his best friend walk away. “We’ll talk about this later, Buck!” Eddie called out, earning a middle finger from his best friend as he walked away.

“You know, I’ve seen you on a few other calls before the one yesterday and you’ve always found a way to catch my eye.” Tommy spoke as the two men stood outside on a balcony of the ballroom where the gala was being held. “Really?” Buck asked, a curious look etching itself onto his face.

Honestly, Buck was crushing hard on the man in front of him and it had been just over 24 hours since they had first spoken to one another. That, plus the alcohol that was fueling his system currently normally meant that he would be making some…regrettable decisions, but he was trying his damndest to not regret anything tonight.

Especially not if Tommy was feeling the same way Buck was feeling.

God champagne gave him nerves of steel. Sober Buck would be feeling like he had nerves of yarn right about now. Tipsy-off-champagne Buck was enjoying this though.

“Oh most definitely. A good looking guy who seems pretty competent in his job from what I could tell from yesterday. I’ve heard your teammates laugh quite loudly at some of your jokes too, so you must be funny. And…I think I heard you say something about some weird fish? Research junkie?” This time it was Tommy’s eyebrow that raised.

“Oh uh, yeah. Can’t sleep sometimes so I just…research a lot of things.” Buck finished the last of the champagne he had brought with him before he sat on the ledge of the window that was behind him.

Sitting was safer than standing when alcohol was involved. Sitting was also safer when a hot man was giving you attention.

Yeah, Buck was just gonna sit here for a bit, just to be on the safe side of things.

Tommy stepped into Buck’s space, his fingers dancing along the skin at Buck’s wrist. “So you’re smart too. A total package of a guy. People must be flocking to date you at this rate.” Buck just scoffed and shook his head. “Not at all. Currently single and honestly, nobody has seemed interested.”

Well, other than maybe Tommy.

“So what you’re saying is,” Tommy began as he stepped into the space between Buck’s legs, blue eyes meeting blue eyes. “There’s no problem if I do this.” Using his fingers to lift Buck’s chin, Tommy bent down and connected their lips. Buck’s hands flew up to cradle Tommy’s face as he continued to kiss the other man, only pulling away to rest his forehead against his.

This was definitely not just the champagne talking.

“No, no it isn’t.” Tommy chuckled as Buck blushed at the fact he had uttered that out loud. “Although I do think we both should be cut off from that champagne for tonight.” Buck hummed in agreement before pulling Tommy in for another kiss, letting himself melt against him.

“Let me take you on a date.” Tommy said as the two men had reentered the ballroom, lips red and swollen from the kissing that had been done on the balcony. Smiling widely and nodding, Buck jotted down his number on a napkin before handing it to Tommy. “Text me the details.”

Tommy took the napkin and placed it in his pocket before pressing a soft kiss to the corner of Buck’s mouth. “See you later Evan.” He murmured before making his exit from the conversation and leaving a smile on Buck’s face.

“Okay, now we really need to talk about all this!” Buck jumped at the words and turned around, realizing Eddie had been sitting at the table the entire time. “Nothing to talk about Eddie. Just ....gonna get to know him better is all.” He sat down in the seat he had previously occupied before looking at Eddie once more.

“Yeah, the swollenness of your lips tells me you’ve already gotten to know him quite well tonight Buckley.”
