Work Text:
Shouta sighs as he puts his head in hands. He thinks of himself as a rational person who is able to figure out a solution to any problem, but this was something he never thought he’d come across. If someone would have asked him at the beginning of the year what he thought his biggest problem might be, he would have said finding time to sleep, but no. His greatest challenge is being the guardian to two kids. Two kids had quite a lot to work through. First of all, he never thought he’d be someone's guardian full-time as in he’s responsible for making legal decisions on their behalf and taking care of them. Being a teacher was different. They went home at the end of the day, or at least they did before the dorms, and especially for breaks.
Holidays to be in fact. Parents were sentimental about this stuff wanting their kids home with them even if it was just for a few days and UA can grant them that much. It’ll help lift their spirits and keep parents’ faith in them to look out for their children.
“Alright everyone, a teacher will be escorting you to your homes and then will pick you up. If anything is wrong, tell them immediately and don’t cause a hassle. They’re taking time out of their day to do this for you. So be grateful.” Shouta explained to the class in the dorm common area about how the week was going to go. Everyone chorused or at least made some grunt that sounded like they understood.
He then felt a tug on his pants. He looks down to see a little girl in a red suit with long white hair and big red eyes staring up at him curiously.
‘Mr. Aizawa, where are me and Deku gonna go?’ Eri whispered.
Shouta looked over to Izuku who froze as he was helping put away a table. His entire body tensed, serving just a bitter reminder of the events that occurred within a few months ago. It was only for a second before he continued on his path to help put everything away. It seemed like he didn’t want to hear the answer, but he could see the boy’s head turned toward them in anticipation. It seems like Eri asked the question he didn’t want to ask himself. He assumed he was just stuck there having nowhere to go.
“You’re both going home with me.” Shouta answered softly. It was none of the other students’ business what he did with his charges. They deserved the same opportunities as them.
Shouta didn’t think about it until Eri brought it up the other day when they were explaining to her about her birthday, which just occurred, and then the holidays. She's starting to understand and Shouta is a patient teacher. Right now she just associates holidays with activities such as Easter means coloring eggs, and Valentine's Day means making colorful cards with hearts telling people how much they mean to you. It’s a good way to teach her so she’ll remember and associate them as joyous occasions and the emotions that should be felt.
It’s December 22nd, a few days before Christmas, and the whole idea of a holiday at his apartment is looking sad. It might as well be Scrooge's house because his dusty apartment is the embodiment of bah humbug. He’s rarely been there lately since he’s been living in the dorms so there is nothing in it in general or related to the holidays. The non-existent tree has nothing on it and unfortunately nothing underneath it either.
Shouta didn’t have to worry about this last year except the occasional gift card to Hizashi and Nemuri and whoever was the unlucky soul he got for the UA Staff Secret Santa. Vlad King still doesn’t appreciate the wooden stake and garlic. Despite the fact that he's normally the Grinch around Christmas, he can’t be this year and actually detest the idea. He has two kids who need to have a good holiday to uplift their spirits that have been crushed over and over these past few months, maybe even years.
Despite living in the dorms for their protection, UA is letting their students go home for the holidays for a couple days before requiring to be back on campus before New Year’s. Shouta kept his apartment just in case and he’s glad he did because even though campus will be closed, he doesn’t think his two want to be stuck here more than they already have to be. The option is available to stay on campus, but neither of them deserve that. He's taken the responsibility as their guardian, not UA. His apartment has two bedrooms and has the capacity to sleep three so he isn't too concerned about having space.
These two kids deserve some normalcy in their lives after what they’ve been through which means looking forward to the holidays at a place they can call home with someone who cares about them. Eri has probably no memory of what holidays are supposed to be like and he hopes to fill that with new memories she’ll cherish. Her nightmares have lessened, but there are nights she'll wake up in full blown tears asking if she's safe. Usually her worries can be calmed after she sees Izuku. Shouta feels guilty for waking the kid up, but it’s the only way they have right now that calms her down to where she’ll go back to sleep. Of course, Izuku says it’s okay and that’s what heroes do with a smile.
As he thinks about the kid, Izuku does cause a little concern for him. It’s only been a few weeks since the joint training session and while he’s gotten better at letting Shouta in, he’s wary. Izuku still sees him as his teacher and it’s like he’s testing him since his screw up. It’s clear that the kid does trust him, he appears unable to wrap his head around the fact that there is someone who cares about him. His mother ingrained into him he’s going to be lonely and a burden has no doubt intensified thanks to the now sad and bitter memories haunting him of Christmas past. Those only serve to hinder the progress that he's made the past few months.
“What’s wrong?” Hizashi asked as he poked him.
“Holiday break.” Shouta groaned.
“Dude. I thought you’d be happy about that. A few days without the kiddos.”
“Mic.” Shouta deadpanned. “Did you forget that I have Midoriya and Eri now?”
Realization came over Hizashi’s face as he then remembered that Shouta had taken custody of both Izuku Midoriya, a student from his homeroom, and Eri, a girl that the same kid rescued from the Yakuza. They both were taken in by UA to nurture and protect them, but Shouta was appointed their main guardian. They asked him for permission and when they needed something, he made legal decisions for them, and ultimately, they went home with him at the end of the day.
Hizashi remembered being told the updates. He was aware of the girl as he was asked to sub for Shouta when he was gone for case meetings and the raid itself. He remembers seeing the sullen looks of those four students and was a little disheartened he couldn’t help them. The Shie Hassaikai was using a little girl, Eri, to make quirk-erasing bullets using her blood and quirk. Disgusting. Luckily they were able to save her with everyone's efforts, mainly by Hero Deku. Hizashi saw the news, he has so much respect for the little green haired hero now.
That's where it went south, fast. Within hours of hearing of the raid’s success it turned into one of Hizashi’s nightmares when becoming a teacher. Izuku Midoriya had been struck down with a raging fever caused by Eri's quirk as literally tearing his own body apart. As his homeroom teacher and a representative of UA, Shouta stayed with him at the hospital while he recovered. His relief hearing about Eri's rescue died when he heard what Shouta discovered. The rage he felt before learning about Eri returned, burning once more for justice for another wronged child. In his delirious state, Izuku revealed his mother abandoned him in August, the second after All Might had spoken to her about the dorms. The kid had no support and was on his own for over a month, almost two. Luckily that's all behind them and Shouta has his kids. He isn’t going to let anything else hurt them like that again.
“Oh yeah. So what’s the problem?” Hizashi asked. “Take 'em home, chill, and have a wicked time together.”
“Yamada, I can’t half-ass this. Any of it. They’ll be bored out of their minds and feel like intruders. Certainly, neither of them deserve me getting them a gift card. It’ll seem like I didn’t bother to try with Midoriya and Eri won’t know what to do with it.” Shouta explained.
“Oh I see. You need to get the listeners gifts! I would also think they might need a semblance of family too. The holiday party was a hoot from what I heard!” Hizashi said.
“Yeah, Eri said she had a good time and liked to hangout with the students.” Shouta mused about it. He did however have to put the sword away and she could play with it when she was older. Much older. Preferably when she was taller than it.
“Well, I’m sure she’ll love anything you get her.” Hizashi tried to ease his concerns. Kids were easy and Eri shouldn’t be too difficult. She’s learning about anything and everything that certainly goes well with her curiosity to try new things.
“I know that. She’ll be rather easy. I’ve noticed she likes a few different hobbies and such so I’ll focus on those and get a few other things.” Shouta summarizes. She really liked drawing and writing so perhaps stationary with various prints she liked would be nice. She also seemed to really enjoy the performance that Class 1A put on for the festival. He remembers he couldn’t get her to stop talking about it for weeks. Maybe she’d like a game that allowed her to sing karaoke or dance, both if they have it. She’s a child that came from nothing, and honestly, she’ll be easy to please, but the other one is more of a challenge. Izuku had something until it just up and left him. “It’s Midoriya I’m having the issue with.”
“Can’t ask his friends?” Hizashi suggested.
Shouta shakes his head.
“He still isn’t talking to them unless he has to and I don’t blame him. He's speaking to Todoroki, but I feel it's mainly school related as he wants him to join Endeavor's agency for his new work study. I think either the kid is pulling one over his old man or he’s sucking up. Could be both. He still talks to Bakugou, if not a little more, but, for once, he hasn’t done anything wrong. The rest of them stepped over the line, invading his privacy, and apparently he isn’t as forgiving as we figured. I can't ask because they won't know and I don't need them in my business. I have to put an actual thought into this. If I get him just anything he’ll just accept it with a smile, but I know better than that he’s just accepting it with a smile to be nice.”
Shouta knows the feeling. He’s the kid who accepts a gift he doesn’t really like with almost the sincerest gratitude and a smile because he doesn’t want to hurt the giver’s feelings. That smile won’t reach his eyes. The kid is just so polite. It was astonishing after his mother’s detachment and everything he's been through in life after he discovered he was quirkless for fifteen years. He could have been angry at the world and made it into his villain origin story, but no. The kid was too good, chose to smile, and strive to become a hero instead.
Shouta knows quite a bit about Izuku now that they’ve spent more than class time together. He likes to draw, having done so with Eri, and likes to keep analysis on quirks he sees. However, notebooks and sketchbooks just seem like a cop out. So did any hero merch, which he knew the kid would be excited for no matter what so Shouta believes that isn’t completely off the table. However, everyone knows this about Izuku and will know from meeting him within five minutes.
“You want it to mean something to him. It’s cute that you care.” Hizashi said with a grin.
“Shut up. The kid’s been through a lot and he doesn't need another adult in life not giving a shit.” Shouta explained. “Both of them.”
“Well you've got like two days to figure it out.” Hizashi said as he clapped his hand on his shoulder.
Shouta closed his eyes and breaths as he resisted the urge to smack him. That’s not helping. He's in a time crunch. He doesn't have much time to do anything. Luckily there aren't any classes and students leave tomorrow. However, his schedule for tomorrow already has something he can’t move. Eri has a check-up tomorrow and she absolutely wants Izuku to go with her because she’s nervous. She almost begged and Shouta told her that would be up to Izuku. Wasn’t too difficult as it was either go with them and get off campus or be stuck alone at campus while his classmates left and would probably try to talk to him. Izuku said yes without hesitation.
At the moment she loves going everywhere with her ‘big brother’ and hero. A tidbit of cute adoration Eri has written in her little diary that Hound Dog suggested she’d start. He didn’t mean to read it, but he found her sprawled out asleep on the table with it open in front of him. He just happened to read it while closing it. If she were to ever tell Izuku he knows the kid would be over the moon to hear it.
Deku is my hero! He’s like my big brother! That’s sumone who proteks you and makes you smile!
Shouta wondered if Hound Dog will have her write letters to people who mean something to her. He’s seen it before as it helps kids develop their emotions and it will also help Eri work on her writing. Her spelling could use some work, but he doesn’t blame and thinks she’s doing very well so far. As of right now she won’t be starting school until she’s more socially accumulated and can control her quirk. Shouta is sure one will happen way before the other. However, that is a situation to tackle for another time in the distant future and he needs to handle the ones happening within the next couple days.
At least his holiday troubles are slowly turning into outcomes because Eri’s letter gives him an idea for what he can do for her for a present that will surely show that he cares about her and what she holds dear to herself. He pulls out his phone and sends a message to one particular student, asking for a favor. It’s a gift idea that would mean the world to a little girl. The student agrees and he’ll have it before she leaves. Izuku is a little more difficult, but he’s got some time so he’ll set it aside for right now. Now, moving onto his other problem.
Shouta hates that he has to resort to such methods, but it’s for a good cause. He’s not that desperate to ask any of his co-workers. They’ll just give him crap before telling him what he needs to know. At least he has one source that won’t judge him and take shots at his pride. Instead of looking on his school issued computer, where nosey ass people can look at his history, he pulled up the search bar on his phone.
Christmas activities with kids
That should be enough to get him started.
A lot of these options are absolutely not. It would be over his dead body, stuffed in his sleeping bag, that he would ever do some of the activities that he was suggested. Go ahead and take him out if they thought about going caroling. Any of them requiring meeting people in large quantities they didn’t know were off the table. Both of these kids are similar to him and prefer not to be in large social settings. Also places like the mall were crossed off the list considering what happened last time. While Izuku is training to be a hero, the kid’s anxiety can be seen a mile away and while Eri is excitedly to try new things, this will be her first time outside of UA not for medical reasons.
Ice skating is something that could be possible. Shouta isn’t entirely against it as they can see about private areas and even if not, they go when attendance is low. He’s pretty sure Eri doesn’t know how and he isn’t sure about Izuku, but that could be something to learn. Now that he thinks about it, they can use the UA’s pool and he can borrow Todoroki for a quick second. Not that he’ll tell him why because Shouta has noticed the kid has the social skills of a rubber duck. Just floating along and saying whatever comes to mind like when a person squeezes it. The son of the current Number One Hero can’t keep a secret and will accidentally tell the rest of his hell class ruining his reputation and Izuku’s peace.
A couple other ideas are plausible that they can do at home and he doesn’t have to participate if he nudges them just right. A few suggestions are making cookies and watching movies. Perfectly safe and allows Eri more exposure. He can just let the kids have fun while he sits back and enjoys the fact they’ll have smiles on their faces that match the joy in their eyes. As long as they burned his apartment down. Something did strike him as possible as they could do after the appointment so the day isn’t filled with nervous energy and shouldn’t be too crowded. He also doesn’t have one yet so it’s the perfect opportunity.
Visiting a Christmas tree farm.
There was actually one that was hosted in an empty parking lot not far from the hospital Eri’s appointment was at. They could go afterward and pick out a tree. He might have decorations in storage and if not, they can grab some too or ask one of the teachers to get them and drop them by. He’s already decided to ask Nemuri to drop off cookie supplies and she’s letting him borrow his Christmas movie collection so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Just some minor ornaments along with arts and crafts supplies, nothing too extravagant. Eri will also have a ball if she can make some of the decorations. The only issue is it’s only a few days before the holiday and all the decent trees will be gone. If that’s the case, then they can pick one up from the store. They can save it for next year.
Huh. Next year. Shouta hasn’t even thought about that yet. He doesn’t quite know the game plan for either kid yet. Izuku might be the easiest to handle. He’s sixteen and once he graduates from UA he’ll be taken on as a sidekick and eventually go pro. He doesn’t doubt, at least for a year or so, that UA will check in on him to make sure he’s doing alright and help him where he needs it. In the end, Nezu has always said despite graduating from UA, all its students are watched over and welcomed home.
Eri is a little more complicated mainly due to her unstable quirk and lack of social interaction outside UA’s walls. There’s also the handle of she’s still very much traumatized and healing. Nezu and the police have discussed for the moment that UA is the safest place for her. She’s protected and has plenty of people here to help her learn and they’ll take going out one step at a time. There is also the major factor that both Mirio and Izuku are there, who Eri runs to with the brightest smile every time she sees one of them. More so Izuku than anyone else. That girl is so enamored by him and he doesn’t blame since he put everything on the line to save her and give her the confidence that her quirk is a blessing.
“Where are we going Mr. Aizawa?” Eri asked as she skipped while holding Izuku’s hand as they exited the hospital.
Overall the appointment went well. Eri was in perfect health and her quirk seemed stable enough where she could start training more on how to control it. Since talking with Izuku the day after the joint training session, she has been asking when she would be able to start ‘working in the kitchen’ so she can help Mirio so he can continue to help other people just like her. Shouta finds it rather cute as she’s taken what Izuku said to heart. It does remind him to teach her about analogies so she doesn’t think they need to practice in the kitchen.
“Do you remember at the class holiday party there was a tree with all the ornaments on it?” Shouta asked.
“Yeah! It was really pretty!” Eri said.
“Well, I thought we could get one for the apartment. We can decorate it too.” Shouta explained.
Eri gasped as her face lit up.
“Deku! Did you hear that?!” Eri said, pulling on the boy’s hand and arm.
“I did!” Izuku answered with a smile. “Putting decorations on the tree is a lot of fun! We can make it look however we want!” Izuku smiled at her as she started to ask questions about what kind of decorations. Izuku explained to her about tinsel, they could use popcorn (which Shouta denied with a straight “No.”), and how ornaments came in all different shapes in sizes that could even be homemade. “There are some that look like figures like angels, bells, and even heroes.”
It’s a distant memory, but Izuku remembers sitting on his father’s shoulders to put the star on the tree that said ‘I AM HERE’ on the center of it. Izuku fondly remembers every Christmas after that he and…her would decorate their tree that they kept in storage. They both tried to keep up the holiday spirit and every year got easier despite his father leaving. Eventually they forgot about his father and Izuku enjoyed the holidays with…her. They’d laugh, watch movies, make cookies, and just be grateful they had each other. This would be his first Christmas without her because she no longer wanted to spend it with him. Selfish children didn’t get anything but the pain that came to them. The loneliness that followed after everyone realized it. Izuku swallowed hard trying not to start crying. He was done crying over her and this year should be different. He had…Shouta and Eri, right?
“Is there a Deku or a Lemillion one?” Eri asked.
Izuku chuckled as she smiled with his eyes shining a moment. “Probably not since we’re both students, but one day maybe!”
“I want one!” Eri said excitedly.
“I’ll make sure to hand deliver it to you!” Izuku said, grinning.
“Yay! You’re like the Easter Bunny!” Eri said as she clasped her hands together like a little light bulb came on.
“Santa Claus, Eri.” Shouta corrected.
“Oh.” Eri said as she giggled before looking ahead. “Wow! Look at all the trees!”
Shouta looked ahead and saw that yes, they had arrived at the farm and they did have a decent selection leftover. However, looking at most of them, they were much too tall for this tiny apartment. He might have to borrow a measuring tape if they have one to make sure. If they don’t have one, he’s sure he would be able to use his capture-weapon as a suitable replacement. He remembered roughly how high his ceiling was.
“Why don’t you two look for a tree you like?” Shouta offered. “Remember it can’t be too tall or it won’t fit on top of the car or in the apartment.”
“I can make sure Mr. Aizawa.” Izuku said as he held out his hand. “Come on, Eri.”
Eri then grabbed Izuku’s hand as Shouta watched them run off to look at the trees. He couldn’t really care too much about which one they picked. This was for them after all. He does have to wonder how they’re both handling things. Eri seems to take everything in with an excited smile and curiosity, but she’s not the one he’s worried about.
It’s Izuku.
The boy has been awfully quiet and the way he’s been responding is rather scripted to appease anyone listening or being answered. Shouta has a guess what’s wrong and he needs to sit down with Izuku. He needs that much. Shouta promised him that much.
Izuku just turned sixteen in July. Six months ago. That means he’s had quite a few holidays under his belt. Fifteen years. Fifteen to be exact. He spent all those holidays with his mother who recently decided her son was too much for her. She called him selfish when it’s really her that should look in a mirror. Shouta isn’t sure how she was before, but he assumes he probably has so many happy memories and traditions that he lived with that no longer mean anything. He’ll never do any of that again and Shouta doesn’t want him to. Izuku has been trying to move on and think about himself. In a way, he needs to be selfish. It’s been a slow process, but every once in a while he’ll see progress.
Izuku has been coming to him when he just needs reassurance or even to talk about his quirk with someone with a fresh pair of ears. Izuku is off and on about calling him Shouta and Mr. Aizawa. Shouta believes that Izuku calling him by his given name during the joint-training session was fueled out of fear. Izuku was scared and wanted someone who said they were going to be there. Not to mention that Shouta had the power to make it stop. Izuku has only done so sparingly within the last month or so. He typically sticks to Mr. Aizawa around Eri because that’s what she refers to him as. She doesn't quite understand the meaning of calling someone by their given or surnames. He does hope she'll call him Shouta someday. Might not be in the near future, but he wants her to also understand he also can be a sense of safety for her and compassion.
“Mr. Aizawa! I want this one!” Eri exclaimed.
Shouta turned around hoping not to see the largest tree in the lot. Instead, he finds something lacking in comparison. Shouta can’t deny it’s honestly the saddest looking tree he’s ever seen. It’s about five feet tall and looks to be missing quite some branches making it see through. This is the tree no one spares a second look at, only left to wilt in the wake of the joyous season.
Shouta looks at Izuku who has been fairly quiet the entire time she’s gushing about the tree and if it were personified it would probably feel the most special in the world. Izuku just keeps his eyes trained on her and looks back at the tree.
It wasn’t long ago he heard the full story of Izuku Midoriya. The once quirkless kid who was given the quirk of the Number One Hero. A kid who was bullied, abused, and although Izuku hasn’t outright said, suicide baited. The kid was put through hell all because he didn’t have a quirk and then only to get one making his life even worse. His mother abandoned him and now his quirk is growing past the point where it’s power may become out of his control and not to mention the worst supervillain alive wants the power for himself. Shouta isn’t ignorant to think Tartarus can hold All For One forever, especially not with how quiet the League of Villains has been lately. Eventually this kid is going to have a target painted on his back bigger than it is now.
Knowing this information, that Izuku keeps extremely private, makes him think about the similarities. He hates that the thought even crossed his mind and he hopes that Izuku has never or will ever think the same. At one point this lot was filled with tall trees that had plentiful and full pines of branches. Everyone looks at the kids who have the flashy looks–quirks. However, there will always be one or two that don’t shine as bright as the others because they’re seen as undesirable. They just get left behind and only receive comments about they’re pointless.
“This one?” Shouta asked.
“Yup! I like it!” Eri said.
Eri is young and sheltered. She doesn't understand that everyone else would ignore this tree to look at the smaller, prettier trees that Shouta can see further back. That’s okay. He’ll let her hold onto this moment, because this is what she wants and it makes her happy. Logically he likes the idea that this will be easy to clean up. He just hopes that Eri doesn’t cry when they will most likely have to throw it out. Maybe she can keep some of the needles or bark as a keepsake.
“Well, let’s take it up to the front so we can pay for it.” Shouta said as he went to grab it.
“I got it, Mr. Aizawa.” Izuku said, stepping forward to pick it up effortlessly, not even using his quirk with his bare hands.
Shouta was about to argue with him, but it was already too late. Izuku had already grabbed the tree and started walking toward the front with Eri following behind him. It’s clear something is bothering him. Shouta wanted to open the conversation, but it wasn’t the time or place. He just makes a mental note to talk to Izuku later as he follows his kids to the front as a woman is gushing to them.
“There’s your dad! You do such a good job taking care of your little sister! You’re such a cute family! It’s nice to see a father with his children celebrating.”
Izuku tensed as the woman’s voice echoed. His hands grip the bark of the tree’s trunk so tight that it digs into his hands. He can feel the rough texture scratching the outer layer of skin. The nerves in his hands that are alerting him to the pain tell him to stop, but he can’t. All of this is too much. Izuku doesn’t want to think that it does feel right, but he feels like it’s not going to last. He knows he should be grateful for having the opportunity this year, because he doesn’t know what his next will be.
Ever since the party he’s just been hearing his classmates go on and on about their plans with their families. How they plan to spend time with their families and all the different traditions. Tsu mentioned how her parents make them cocoa as they watch movies together and fall asleep in the living room. Jirou mentioned how her and her parents hold concerts in the part where people can come dance and have a merry time. Satou mentioned that his family makes baked goods and that he’ll bring plenty back to share. Eventually Izuku couldn’t hold it in anymore and ran to his room to shut the door so no one could see him cry. His heart ached so badly because he doesn’t think he’ll ever get these chances again and he isn’t just thinking about the holidays. He doesn’t think Shouta would be the type to put on a whole charade just to make them happy. Then he told them they were finding a tree…perhaps he was wrong. Shouta promised he’d be there, but does that mean he’ll be there in the capacity that Izuku wants. Izuku wants him to be there as a parent because he wants to, not his teacher out of obligation. He doesn’t doubt his teacher cares about him, but Izuku wants to know if he could be more than that.
Izuku takes a deep breath to calm himself. He doesn’t want to start sobbing right here; he doesn’t want to ruin the good time Eri is clearly having as she’s done nothing but smile since they’ve arrived. She doesn’t exactly understand what happened to him, but she’ll understand once she’s older that they share something in common. A harsh truth that Izuku wishes at least she didn’t have to go through.
Their mothers abandoned them because of their quirks.
They both are orphans who just want to belong with someone.
“Would you like a picture?” the lady asked with a sweet smile.
“I do!” Eri said happily.
“Say please, Eri.” Shouta reminded her as he paid.
“I would like one please!” Eris corrected.
“Of course, sweetheart. Now, stand next to each other. A little closer to your father dear.” the lady told Izuku and Izuku sucked in a breath before doing as he’s told. “Perfect! Here you go!”
The lady has a camera that connects to a printer on the table. She takes out the three photos she requested and smiles at how cute this family is. She then hands the little girl the printed photo and she smiles at her reaction.
Eri took the photo gently and looked at it with such wonder and sparkle to her eyes. This was such a great gift! It would have been even better if Mirio was here, but he had gone home to his own family. She’ll have to ask Shouta if she can get a picture with the four of them to keep so she’ll always remember them–her heroes. She loves it!
“Izuku? Do you want one?” Shouta asked.
“No, thanks.” Izuku said as he just looked off to the side as his jaw tensed.
Shouta narrowed his eyes on the boy and took the photos before thanking the woman and paying her. He seemed in a good mood just moments ago when they picked out the tree. He does hope he isn’t overstepping somehow and Izuku is just swallowing down his feelings about the entire ordeal because of Eri. Shouta hates that because that’s exactly something Izuku would do.
When arrive at his complex, Izuku also carries the tree up to the apartment despite Shouta saying he could do it. It’s a simple gated place Shouta liked because it was quiet and security was rather tight. It’s a little bit away from UA and hopefully it feels like to them as getting a vacation. When they enter the lights are on, but seeing bags on the counter instantly calms Shouta’s nerves. Hizashi and Nemuri must have stopped by and forgot to turn off the lights. If his power bill is high, he’s making them pay for it. Perhaps he’ll be lenient because they did set up quite a bit like the tree holder and the dvd player. They also stocked his fridge with food for the next couple days and got snacks for everyone.
“Should I put the tree over there, Mr. Aizawa?” Izuku asked, gesturing toward the corner of the room.
“It seems to be the best spot and you can call me Shouta.” Shouta replied.
“Right.” Izuku nodded as he went to put the tree on the stand as he just kept his eyes down.
They had a fake tree so they would always get out as soon as December started. Every day they'd put a few decorations on the tree so every day could be special. It would be completed a few days prior to Christmas where they’d put on the star and light it. They'd also make cookies for all their neighbors and even Katsuki’s family. Izuku made sure to remind his–her that Katsuki liked spicy so they'd make a few specially for him. Despite his grumbling, he eats them. As he latches the tree into place, Izuku winces as he's reminded about his hands.
“Um, Shouta? May I use your bathroom?” Izuku asked as he turned to see Shouta putting away the groceries with Eri’s help as she handed him things like a little helper.
“You don’t have to ask, kid. It’s down the hall on the left.” Shouta answered. He can hear the hesitancy in his voice in using his given name. Izuku wants to call him Mr. Aizawa, but won’t because he respects Shouta and wants to please him.
“Thanks.” Izuku said as he quickly went toward the bathroom.
Izuku has been in the bathroom for twenty minutes and Shouta is a little worried. Eri is currently taking a quick nap before he gets dinner started. Being at the doctor’s and running around the lot wore her out and he could tell in the car her eyes were drooping. Like any child she refused and one day she will realize that naptime as an adult is the best thing ever. He just got her to lay down with the promise of a surprise when she wakes up. He carefully walks down the hall and hears hisses, winces of pain. Instantly Shouta starts to panic as he opens the door to see Izuku over the sink with small blood stains on the white counter.
Izuku turns and his green eyes widen. He immediately puts his hand behind his back and grins sheepishly.
“Mr. Aiza–Shouta! Sorry I took too long. Um, everything’s fine.” Izuku said frantically.
“Let me see.” Shouta said as he walked to stand in front of him. “I’m not mad, what happened?”
Izuku looked down at the floor as he removed his hands from behind his back. Shouta sees the boy’s hands are bright red in skin tone and has several scratches that are festering with blood.
“It's nothing! I can take care of it and it's my fault!” Izuku said frantically as Shouta took the scarred ones into his own.
“What happened?” Shouta asked again. A sick dreadful thought enters his mind. He's never thought about it, but perhaps he should have. Izuku’s mental health wasn't the best and perhaps he should have done a better job at checking in. “You didn't do this yourself, did you?”
“Huh?” Izuku asked a little confused, but realization slammed into him like a Detroit Smash. “No! It was the tree and also the cold really makes my hands hurt! I should have worn gloves or something! We had a fake tree so I didn't know the bark was tearing up my hands until it was too late. I didn't want you to worry, but I guess I messed that up anyway as usual.”
“Enough of that.” Shouta said going to the medicine cabinet. “I was worried that you might be having a rough time with everything so I’m going to assume I was right.”
Izuku just sighed and looked down at his hands as Shouta had him sit on the closed toilet and he kneeled down in front of him to tend to his hands. Izuku barely winced as he checked to make sure all the wood was out before putting hydrogen peroxide on them. Just like him to cause a problem and have to make Shouta take care of him. Shouta was already doing so much by inviting them into his home when he could have just left them at campus for the weekend. His wants aren’t that important, he’ll be fine. He understands that Eri needed–
“You’re not causing any problems and I’m not doing this just for Eri.”
Izuku looked up at the man to see him still focused on the task at hand.
“I didn’t say anything.” Izuku said nervously. He was pretty sure his brain to mouth filter was working.
“You didn’t have to. I think in the past few months I’ve gotten to know you pretty well, kid. I know Midoriya and Deku, the student in Class 1A who doesn’t give up no matter what and then I’ve come to know Izuku, the kid who I willingly chose to take in because he needs a home just as much as the little girl he saved. The kid who doesn’t want to be alone and I won’t leave him as such because I care about this kid more than as his teacher. I understand this kid, my kid, is afraid that if he gets close to anyone, they’ll just leave. You must be feeling rather distraught with everything and it’s okay to feel that way, but please remember this is about you too. You deserve a nice holiday not cooped up at the school. I can’t promise you that these feelings won’t be bitter, but I will promise you that you will have a place here with me for anything. I’m here for sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, because it won’t matter how old you are and if you’re graduated. I don’t think Eri would have it otherwise. You promised her a Deku ornament so as a hero you better than anyone that we make good on the promises we can keep. So, do you understand, problem child?”
Izuku wished he could wipe his eyes, but can’t because Shouta was still holding onto his hands giving them tender love and care along with gentle squeezes of reassurance. Despite the man’s usual cold demeanor, his hands are providing him with a warmth he so desperately craved. He’s not wrong. He’s bitter and sad and that’s not what Eri’s holidays should be about. That’s not what his own should be about. They should be filled with fun and smiles that Izuku wasn’t sure he could give because he couldn’t put those smiles on himself. He was dreading that he’d just be in the way and be alone for the rest of his life.
“Yeah.” Izuku said as he nodded as some tears fell from his eyes. “You’re right. I’m afraid. She left me and it feels like she took everything with her. All I knew is gone, leaving me alone.”
“You’re not alone, kid. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll say it as many times as I need to. All Might certainly isn’t going to leave you either or your classmates. They butt their noses into your business because they care and want to support you. Something I can tell you’ve never had, but you have that now. It’s going to take time, but one day you’ll accept it. I don’t know where you call home, but being with me will always be home.”
Shouta has an idea for what Izuku needs for a gift. Something he doesn’t even realize he wants and it is certainly something this sentimental kid needs. He’s going to need some help though and is certainly going to have to swallow his pride. He needs to message a couple people to make this work. He only has until tomorrow to get it done as it’ll be Christmas Eve and Shouta refuses to give it to him late. He’s been too late with so much already and this is something that he can prevent from meeting the same fate.
“Thank you…Shouta.” Izuku said and this time Shouta doesn’t feel like it’s forced.
“You’re welcome. Now, how about we decorate the tree and then make cookies?” Shouta said as he got up and stretched his legs. “I guess with your hands like that I’ll have to help. Don’t need anything getting into those scratches. Clean yourself up while I wake Eri.”
Izuku just looked on in shock as he watched the man leave. They were going to do WHAT?!
Decorating the tree went as expected as Eri ran around placing ornaments right next to each other and either Shouta or Izuku would secretly space them out without her noticing. It was almost luck that they didn’t have many decorations for their tree that didn’t have much space. Izuku looked at the once subpar tree that was now as beautiful as the ones in the cities. Sure it wasn’t tall or bushy, but it was theirs.
“Now for the star.” Izuku said. “Eri, want me to lift you up so you can put it on?”
“Please!” Eri said, rushing toward him.
Izuku winced a second as he picked her up, but the pain was worth it as he watched her put the star on the tree with a smile as bright as it was. Shouta hooked up the cords from his place behind the tree and turned the switch. As it suggested, like a switch, everything seemed to light up. The tree glowed in multi-colored lights as did the bright white star which sat on top. Some of the shiny plastic ornaments reflected the light causing it to shine. The once blank spaces of the tree were filled with beautiful colors of pines they couldn’t see yet. Like a switch, Eri’s suspenseful eyes shined like the star as she looked on. Making the tree herself with the people she cared about was so different than seeing one.
“Does it look good?” Shouta asked from behind the tree where he plugged everything in.
Izuku smiled as he looked at Eri and then the tree where Shouta was coming out to see from himself.
“It’s perfect.”
Izuku couldn’t keep his laughs to himself. Shouta wasn’t his teacher right now so the man couldn’t give him detention or extra laps for laughing. He’s sorry for laughing, but it was too funny to see the man’s black hair peppered white with cookie mix as Eri thought it would be cute to fling it. It was so random too. He noticed her looking between them before she smiled to herself.
“Eri, why did you do that?” Izuku asked between his laughs.
“You looked sad so I wanted to make you smile!” Eri said with a smile as she continued to stir.
“Oh, at my expense.” Shouta deadpanned before pinching some leftover dry mix between his fingers and flicking it at Izuku with a smirk.
“Ah!” Izuku said in surprise as another smile appeared.
“Hehehe.” Eri giggled. “You match!”
“Let’s not cause a mess, but I’m not cleaning it up.” Shouta said as he finished stirring the parts Eri couldn’t get. “We made drop cookies and ones we can make shapes out of. I don’t have any cutters so we’ll just shape them as we want.”
“Can we make apple shaped ones?” Eri asked.
“Let’s give it our best shot!” Izuku said as he pumped his fist. It shouldn’t be too hard. Apples were just round and even if they didn’t come out right, he’ll just tell Eri the drop cookies are apples.
Their ‘best shot’ turned out to be apple crisps. A little deformed and on the more brown side, but nonetheless tasted good to the kids. They forgo decorating them as someone couldn’t keep their hands to themselves, plucking a hot one right off the tray. Cough, Izuku. The cookie was piping hot and the kid just shoved it in his mouth, eating it like a chipmunk. Shouta hopes it burns a little to teach him a lesson, but it appears not to affect him.
“Can I have one?” Eri asked.
“You wait until they’re cool, unlike this problem child.” Shouta deadpanned.
Despite Izuku probably teaching Eri a bad habit, he can’t be mad as that was the most childish thing he’s seen the kid do all day. The Izuku he’s come to see outside the classroom who is a mischievous child who has so much to give is finally coming out to play. The talk they had seems to have done the trick as he’s relaxed and enjoying himself like a kid.
Shouta also learned something new about the kid. He doesn’t care for icing. He likes sweet things, like cookies, as much as the next kid, but he claims icing is just a little too much. He wonders if his mother made cakes that either had none or barely any of them. If not, Shouta makes a mental note to do that for Izuku’s seventeenth birthday to make the kid feel special. It’s hard to believe that’s just in another six months as time seems to be flying by.
Call him a softy, but these two are sticking around long term so he’s going to embrace it and spoil them. They deserve to have everything they want for the moments that are truly special for them, such as birthdays and the holidays. Oh well, at least he’ll only go broke twice a year, Christmas and July.
“Come on you two.” Shouta said as he placed some cookies on a plate to take into the living room. Nemuri swore that Eri needed to watch. Cute little stories that looked like they were made of dolls. He guessed he could put up with cheesy movies for a couple days. “We can watch a movie before bed. The ones Midnight gave me are only like an hour.”
“Which one should we watch, Deku?” Eri asked, not recognizing any of them as Shouta put out a few Christmas classics.
“You pick which one appeals to you the best. I’ve seen them.” Izuku answered as he can see her eyeing a certain one, but wants to pick one he’d like too.
“This one!” Eri said pointing to the movie that depicted an animal.
Shouta and Izuku smiled at each other. Since Shouta has been teaching her about Christmas and everything it entails, she’s been fawning over all the different aspects and one that caught her attention was reindeers. In her adorable words, ‘They have horns like me!’ Neither one of them are surprised about this choice of ‘Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer’. They agreed that that one would be first as they enjoyed some of the cookies they made.
‘We’ll simply have to overlook it.’
‘How can we?’
.
.
.
‘Look at the beak!’
‘Fire snout!’
‘Stop calling me names!’
“Why are they being so mean to him?” Eri asked sadly.
Shouta closed his eyes and inhaled as he listened to the echoes of all reindeer call Rudolph names. He didn’t think about this. Despite the happy endings of Christmas stories, they often had lessons to teach. Some of them Shouta bitterly thought were a little more cruel than others, especially if you looked a little deeper. Despite what they watched, Eri was going to have questions. Shouta was trying to formulate what exactly to say to her so she’d understand.
“Hey, Eri.” a voice and Shouta looked to see Izuku had scooted next to her. “Sometimes, kids, like those reindeer, can be mean just because someone’s different. It’s something we can’t help. We can’t control others. But that doesn’t mean he or anyone is any less than everyone else. People just don’t understand what isn’t considered normal. However, you’ll see that sometimes the things that make us different is what makes us special and able to help others. Like your quirk helped me. Rudolph’s a hero, you’ll see because he chooses to use his gift to help others.”
Damn, Shouta couldn’t have said it better and it certainly means more to Eri hearing it come from Izuku than himself. That’s her hero and her big brother. He’ll tell Izuku later that he was impressed by what he said to her as he sees understanding and awe flood Eri’s face as she continues to watch the movie as Rudolph risks his life to save the people he loves and then saves Christmas. He’ll remind Izuku to remember those words because he should also take them to heart.
Izuku didn’t see the fond expression Shouta was giving him. The older man wonders if Izuku is aware how much of what he said transfers into the real world now and if Eri understands that. By the look on the kid’s face as he tells her, he guesses he’s well aware and has turned it into a life lesson for her. He just hopes that he can learn from himself too; the peaceful look on his face says exactly that.
‘He went down in history!’
“So Eri, what did you think?” Izuku asked.
“I loved it! Can we watch another?!”
“Not tonight.” Shouta said. “It’s getting late.”
Shouta looked at his phone to see it’s ten o’clock. Perfect timing so they can get some sleep. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and he plans to take them out tomorrow while ‘Santa helpers’ come in and deliver the gifts he plans to give to the kids. He also sees that all his messages have been answered. Good.
Kayama-Midnight: Of course I’ll help! Your payment is me taking a couple cookies when I stop by! I’ll have it done before you get home. I’ll put it in your room.
Aizawa: I’ll leave mine on the bed, put it on when you get here.
Iida: Understood Mr. Aizawa! I will let the class know to have theirs done before Ms. Midnight arrives! My apologies if this seems overstepping, but I’m glad to hear that Midoriya is having a good holiday.
Aizawa: Thank you, Iida. Enjoy your holidays.
Shouta knows he is as Izuku’s smiles are finally reaching his eyes.
Sleeping arrangements were simple enough as Shouta was prepared. He has two friends who don’t respect his personal space and more often than he likes have crashed at his place at the same time. Despite only having two bedrooms, there are three beds. His couch converts into a bed which Izuku elected to take. Luckily Shouta is no slouch when it comes to his furniture. All the chairs, the couch itself, and the pull out bed are extremely comfortable. Izuku mentioned he slept like a baby.
They have a lazy day and sleep in until eleven before he gets everyone up to start the day. More like so they can leave the apartment for a few hours so Nemuri can come in and drop off the gifts he told her to get, including his special ones. He doesn't tell them that, but says he’s taking them to a diner he likes for lunch. Shouta wanted to take him ice skating, but apparently the rink is closed due to a kid’s quirk going haywire and it’ll be too late to go to UA. It’s a rather simple day and Eri is surprised to come home and see all the gifts under the tree that late afternoon, early evening.
Izuku tells her that it’s the gift of giving, which they can do every day, and this is just a physical manifestation of that and the care that Shouta has for them. He then leans over and whispers something in her ear. She looks a little nervous before he nods as if confirming what he said. That nervous look transforms into courage and Shouta wonders what it was about.
His kids are allowed to have their secrets.
They wrap up Christmas Eve with a simple dinner that Shouta made and end with a similar night as before. He knows he’s not a five-star chef, but he can make a dinner without killing anyone or giving them food poisoning. They watch ‘Frosty the Snowman’ and ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ before bed because Shouta will allow them to stay up a little later.
It’s totally not a ploy to make them sleep in tomorrow so he can too.
Shouta never thought he’d wake up to a child shouting on Christmas morning like they do in movies, but yet here he is. Eri’s excitement can be heard from his bedroom and she’s no doubt already woken Izuku up probably by jumping on him. Poor kid. Merry Saint Nick, she’s probably awoken his neighbors and hopefully they don’t complain. He rolls over to see what time it is and sees it’s nine. For him that’s too early, but he guesses for her that’s about normal and his plan failed.
Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock.
“Mr. Aizawa! Are you awake yet?!” Eri’s voice comes through the door.
“Eri, he’s probably still asleep.” Came Izuku’s reply.
“Ah, but I wanna celebrate with everyone now!”
Izuku chuckled. “We will. Come on, let’s sneak a cookie for breakfast. Don’t tell Shouta.”
“Okay!”
Brat.
He groans as he rolls out of bed to prevent them from sneaking more than one cookie. If he didn’t put his foot down earlier they would have eaten them all in one sitting and no doubt would do so now. Shouta doesn’t understand why because it’s a store bought mix that honestly, to him at least, didn’t taste great. He puts his slippers on, exiting the room to enter the living area to see them in fact snacking on cookies.
“What are you doing?” Shouta asked.
“It’s a holiday tradition to eat cookies for breakfast on Christmas.” Izuku said as he shoved another in his mouth, grinning as he chewed.
“It is?!” Eri asked as her eyes got big.
“It is not.” Shouta answered. “Don’t let him teach you bad habits. We can open presents then we’ll have a proper breakfast.”
They take turns opening their presents and of course, Eri goes first. She tears into each wrapped gift or bag like someone told her candy apples were inside. Thanks to Midnight, he was able to get her some new drawing pads along with quite an assortment of pens, markers, and pencils. She absolutely loves it and says she can’t wait to use them. She also got a stuffed unicorn, but that’s from the UA staff. Like any parent he got her clothes and hair accessories that she wants to play dress up with later. The one item she loves the most is the karaoke game that hooks into the television. She says she’ll sing all the time, having been fascinated with it since the festival. Shouta kind of dreads it, but is glad she loves it so much.
Shouta will admit, shopping for a sixteen year old versus a seven year old is very different. It got a little easier remembering Izuku didn’t have much growing up and has a one track mind. He got Izuku some hero merch that he knows the kid doesn’t have yet, especially since it’s not all All Might related. He also got him a few notebooks and some nice pens. The kid is a sucker for a good pen. He also got the kid a few books about hero statistics and quirk theory. Shouta finds them boring, but he looks excited for it. The one thing that makes Izuku’s eyes a little wide is the handheld game system and a copy of ‘Hero Smash’ which is the new hero fighting game that came out where you can build your own character or play as real pros. Izuku looks like he wants to protest, but thanks him.
“I’ve got one more for each of you. Here Eri, I figured you would like this one the best.” Shouta said as he sat the bag in front of her that he had been hiding.
Eri looked at the dark green bag with red sparkly tissue paper poking out. She smiled at it as it reminded her of the Christmas colors which so far is her favorite holiday, but more so as she looked at Izuku. His hair, eyes, and favorite shoes reminded her of those two colors now and she loves the holiday even more. From what Shouta has taught her about Christmas, she understands it’s about giving as she opens it.
Deku gave her everything she ever wanted.
Deku gave her a new life filled with happiness instead of pain.
Deku was in her hands.
Eri squealed as she hugged the custom made Deku doll close to her chest. It looked just like him in his dark green hero costume she remembers desperately clinging to as she clung to the hope he would save her. The smiles weren’t the same, but she could always just look at her hero and it was certainly one she’d never forget. She remembers that day so clearly and will never forget it. The kind boy with the gentle touch became her hero.
“Do you like it?” Shouta asked.
“I love it, Mr. Shouta!” Eri said as she got up, ran to him, and hugged him.
Shouta’s eyes widened as he accepted the embrace as he was surprised at being called by his given name by her for the first time. He doesn’t understand why of all times she could do such a thing as she’s never had an inkling to do so. He looks over her shoulder to see…his boy as he just smiles as he stares at the doll in shock. He understands now. Of course Izuku has something to do with this. Brat.
“I’m glad you like it. I’m sure I can get one of Lemillion if you wanted.” Shouta said.
“Later. I want Deku right now.” Eri said as she hugged the doll as Izuku’s face went bright red and Shouta thought about karma.
“How did you get that?” Izuku asked.
“Yaoyorozu. I asked her to make it before she left.” Shouta explained as Izuku nodded in understanding. “Now, for you.”
“Me? I don’t need anything else–”
“Enough kid. We didn’t go through all the trouble and this is something you can also keep with you as a reminder when everything we’ve talked through gets too loud.” Shouta interrupted as he went to his bedroom to see the covered board leaning against the wall he noted there last night.
It was seriously last minute and he was lucky that he could entrust the job to get it created in time to Nemuri and Iida. They were both good friends to their respective person. As class representative, he was discreet and would keep it to himself as much as possible. Luckily everyone was willing to come together to do this for him after he told Iida what to say to them.
‘Tell Izuku how much he means to you. He’s been through a lot in the past couple months and is constantly reminded that he was left alone. It isn’t his duty to tell what happened, but it is your duty as his friends to support him no matter what you know. If you truly care about your classmate, don’t make him doubt that you’ll stay by his side.’
He hasn’t looked at it yet. The only person who has seen the finished project is Nemuri because she made it. He wanted Izuku to technically be the first person to see the finished work. He wanted to experience it with him and hope it has the desired effect. She’s always had a knack for arts and crafts, considering she teaches Modern Art History, so he was the one to ask for a huge favor. Cookies and him actually asking for help was payment enough and she has a soft spot for these kids too.
Knowing she didn’t have any plans, he actually invited both Hizashi and Nemuri over, but they both declined saying his kids needed him just for themselves and could come later in the day, especially with their own gifts for Shouta’s kids. He appreciates it as he kind of just invited them out of courtesy and wants to spend some alone time with the two of them.
An immediate family matter.
“What’s that?” Eri asked curiously as she tried to take a peak at what it was.
“It’s for Izuku.” Shouta said as he handed him the board.
Izuku curiously looked at the board as he took over the cover. At first he wasn’t sure what to make of it and thought it was some kind of poster. Instead what he found was a large picture frame with a plastic covering to prevent any damage and to keep everything in place. The board was decorated with school and hero memorabilia which was so cool as it was All Might, Hawks, Mirko, Best Jeanist, and a few others that taught at the school. There were also pictures of him and his friends. Izuku sucks in a breath as he sees the same picture Eri has sitting on the nightstand in the bedroom. It’s the one from the other day of the three of them. He and Eri have bright smiles and Shouta looks unbothered, but Izuku swears he can see a small smile. He really did want that photo, but he was afraid of having something else bitterly reminding him of something that might not last. Lastly, the pictures are surrounded by notes in various different handwriting.
Midoriya, you are a valued friend and fellow hero. Remember, if you ever want to talk or anything just let me know. We’re friends and friends do not let each go through tough battles alone. I am here for you, Midoriya, just like you have done for me and so many others. -Iida
It’s okay for heroes to cry. Heroes aren’t ever alone. You and I both know we can’t walk this path alone. I’m here for you too along with some soba. -Todoroki
Deku means ‘You Can Do It!’ We can do anything with you by our side and you can do anything with us supporting you! You inspire us to do our best because you never give up! -Uraraka
You’re literally the manliest man I know! Bro, you always get up after getting knocked down! I’ll be your rock if you need me to take a hit if you want to relieve some stress or need someone to talk to! I’m sorry I revealed what was going on before you wanted to tell us, but no offense dude, would you have told us? We just want to make sure you’re ready to face off against anyone who dares to challenge us. That’s right! US! Bros stick together! -Kirishima
Izuku’s hand came over his mouth as he started to sob as he read each one. Through his blurry vision he read and felt the immense support from each one of his classmates. Each and every one of them wrote something kind about him and told him that they would never leave him. Even some of his teachers had written kind things about him and he even sees one from Mirio. Of course, that isn't the one that catches his attention. However, they are fairly similar, but this happens to be one of Izuku's own heroes.
Young Midoriya, you are an inspiration to all generations. I look at you every day so proud of how far you’ve grown and I cannot wait to see where you’ll go as a hero and person. Keep that fire burning inside you and become the hero you want to be. You want to save everyone with a smile on your face and I know that’s what you’ll do. So smile alongside those who will stand beside you. I will protect and raise you like you were my own. I couldn’t ask for a better student. -All Might
Izuku knows he’s being vague on purpose, but he understands. He says student, but what he really means is successor. He promises to keep the promise he made to her to him regardless of what’s happened because nothing has changed. He’s still here running toward his dream of being a hero that’s always smiling.
I never thought such a problem child would impact me so much. I used to not get close to my students because I can’t stand the thought of anything happening to them, so of course, you ruined that. I’m proud of you, Izuku. As your teacher you’ve impressed me again and again with your ability to go beyond what’s asked and make a difference. As your parental figure, I’ll be here to reassure you that you made the right choice and protect you from whatever troubles you, whether it be a villain you can’t handle or your own demons. You will never be alone because I won’t leave you. I keep promises. You classmates won’t leave you either because your spirit has spread to them. You raise their standards and they’re going to support you because you inspire them. You’re an inspiration to your peers and even to myself. You can always come to me, problem child. None of us want to see you falter, because as you’ve said, how can we call ourselves heroes? A hero is what you are, Izuku Midoriya. Deku will become a great hero and I can’t wait to see what you do because I’ll be there to see it. -Shouta
Izuku snorted as he couldn’t help himself from crying more. He didn’t think he had any tears left to give. He closed his eyes and silently thanked each and every one of them. This means so much to him and is more than he could have ever asked for. He felt a pair of strong arms enveloped him in a hug and instinctively knowing these were safe and unwavering, he returned Shouta’s hug.
“It’s alright, Izuku. No one else is going anywhere.” Shouta soothed.
Izuku smiles as he sees so many sweet messages written. Perhaps he’ll sit down with everyone once they get back to campus to give them an explanation. He might have been a little too quick to give everyone the cold shoulder. They just all care about him as his friends. Class 1A can even be considered its own little family. A dad in Iida, a mom in Yaoyorozu, and they even have the creepy cousin that no one wants to invite to the family reunion, but do so anyway because he’s family in Mineta. They all have a place that Izuku can visibly see is with him.
They were only worried about him because he certainly knew he wasn’t himself. No one could blame him. By now they’ve learned their lesson about respecting privacy and he doesn’t want to stay mad at them. He doesn’t even think he’s mad anymore, he was just too concerned that they might leave him too if they found out.
He looks at Shouta and Eri along with thinking about all the friends he's made at UA. He's coming to terms with the fact they've certainly proven themselves over and over that they won't leave him. He thinks that fear of loneliness is fading, but it also brings forth another. The anxiety in his mind births a new fear of he can't bear to see anything happen to them. He knows the road he walks on is treacherous. He'd do it alone, but apparently over twenty people won't let him. He’ll just have to protect them and keep those who mean so much to him safe. Even if that might one day mean pushing them away.
“What does this mean?” Eri asked.
Izuku looked at the board to see…
‘I’m going to surpass you, damned nerd. I’ll be at your heels so don’t ever fucking say you’re alone. You are not alone because we’re chasing each other. Don’t fall behind me or I’ll kick your ass! -Katsuki/Kacchan
Izuku’s eyes widened as he squeaked before covering it with his hand so Eri can’t read it again. He fondly thinks of his childhood friend as he rolls his eyes. It’s so like Katsuki to make sweet messages sound rude as shit. Izuku doesn’t know why he’s surprised since he’s known he can be a bit of an asshole for years, but he cares in his own way. He guesses he’s just surprised he wrote him something at all. He’ll have to thank him because despite their differences and past, Katsuki has truly proven he’s changing and Izuku can’t wait to see where he’ll go. He won’t fall behind him because he’s always been chasing after him.
“Nothing you need to worry about.” Izuku said. No doubt she’s probably heard worse from her time with the Shie Hassaikai or even Katsuki himself, but she doesn’t need to read it out loud and learn that language.
“Okay!” Eri said none the wiser.
Shouta looked at the two of them as they played with Eri’s new stationary. The two of them laughed as Izuku showed her all the different prints, stamps, and pictures she could make. Her red eyes only got larger as amazement took over. She tells Izuku that she’s going to make everyone pictures that she can give to them. These are her presents because she says the picture they got the other day is precious to her so she needs to make ones like it.
Eri’s more permanent residence has already been discussed in staying with him. Shouta knows this for sure when she hands him a picture of himself, Izuku and her calling it her family. He knows now that the girl adores him despite his standoff attitude and she trusts him. Every time she needs help or sees him she is so excited and practically is glued to him when she isn’t around her heroes. He’s also the only person in the world who can help train her quirk. He’ll have many more holidays with her. They’ll be able to do this every year. None of this will change because Shouta doesn’t think he can imagine that without either of them there with him.
They’re both such good kids and the time they’ve spent the last couple days has been rather enjoyable. Shouta never thought he’d enjoy the presence of children as he can barely stand his students on good days, but this was welcomed in his own space. He’s enjoyed having Izuku around the past few months in a capacity that isn’t just his student. He’s his problem child, emphasis on child, his child.
Maybe…UA doesn’t have to be Izuku’s permanent residence. Izuku can have a new home with a guardian, a parent, who will take care of him. He knows all the boy’s secrets and has seen how great of a kid he is. He both hates and thanks Inko Midoriya for giving her son up. He hates her for the grief she’s caused him. With a few simple sentences she destroyed her son’s mental health which Shouta has tirelessly worked to build it back up. He knows it’s going to be a roller coaster and he’s ready to ride it with him which is why he thanks that vile woman. She gave him his son. Izuku is more than just his student as he looks at the kid’s smiling face. He’s brave, smart, and passionate and Shouta doesn’t understand why anyone would give up this kid. That’s fine, he’ll just take him. Be a little selfish and get two kids. Perhaps, if Izuku agrees, he can stay with him and actually be his son. It might take a month or two, but filing for adoption shouldn’t be too much trouble.
Izuku agreeing will be the best gift he can ask for. He’ll accept that it’s a little late because it’s worth it.
