Chapter Text
My personal WW lore because all the new continuities are rough:
The Amazons were shaped in clay and brought to life by taking “souls of women whose lives had been cut short by the ignorance of men” from the Well of Souls by Aphrodite, Ares[1], Artemis, Athena, and Hera in an attempt to give the souls peace and power after cruel lives. Sister-queens Hippolyta and Antiope were gifted the Girdles of Gaia (Greek girdles/large belts) of great power to rule over all Amazons.
Word soon spread about these amazing warrior women living in Themyscira. Even legendary hero Heracles was defeated by Hippolyta, and he then threw a banquet in honor of the Amazon’s victory. Where he drugged Hippolyta’s wine and stole her Girdle, attempting to enslave the Amazons.[2]
Hippolyta turned to the gods for vengeance, and was helped by Athena. In return for freedom, she would embrace peace and Themyscira would be hidden from mortal eyes.
Antiope had fallen in love with Theseus after he accompanied Heracles, and he had betrayed her. She would not settle for peace. Giving her Girdle to Hippolyta, she forsook her immortality on Themyscira and the Gods of Olympus.
Taking a faction of vengeful Amazons with her. Antiope exacted her revenge by killing Theseus, recovering her sister’s Girdle, and being killed by Theseus’ wife Ariadne.[3] Now with a new leader, this “Lost Tribe” of Amazons wandered until they settled in an Egyptian desert, where they founded the city of Bana-Mighdall. Capturing men for breeding and only keeping the female children. Working as mercenaries, weaponsmiths, and arms dealers.
Disagreeing with her sister’s war-minded ways, Atalanta splintered the Amazons again, sailing away with her like-minded sisters and exploring the world. Where Atalanta found love with a local river god, The Amazons regaining their immortality with their faith in local dieties like Tupa, Kuat, and Iae in the Amazonian rainforest. Dubbing themselves the Esquecidas "Forgotten Ones" tribe.[4]
There are 3 types of known Amazons - Themyscirans (off the coast of Greece), Bana-Mighdallans (in the deserts of Egypt), and the Esquecidas (in the Amazonian rainforests).
If you're here from my DPxDC works:
The Necropoli, or Pandora’s sect- were “returned to the Well of Souls” during the Battle of the Banquet before the Amazons were split into factions. (These Amazons do not take the Trials* to earn Bracers, as they were already dead when these traditions were created.)
