Work Text:
Draco leaned against the doorframe of his son’s room, a peaceful smile on his face. Whenever she stayed the night this was his favourite part of the day, the one that always made him feel calm yet he couldn’t tame the butterflies in his stomach. Watching Hermione read to four-year-old Scorpius always filled him with hope that one day his future would permanently have her in it, with a couple more kids if he was lucky.
Scorpius was curled up against her side, eyes fighting to stay open. Her voice was quiet and soothing as she continued to read their most loved Muggle book, The Velveteen Rabbit. He was sure that both adults could recite it in their sleep yet it was the only book he picked out when Hermione stayed the night. It was a gift from her on Scorpius’ fourth birthday and was now part of the evening ritual. Normally, Malfoy hated it whenever someone else put his son to bed. However, being here to watch them bond was almost better than reading to Scorpius himself.
“Minnie, thirsty.”
“Of course you are.” Like clockwork Scorpius would get thirsty right before he was about to fall fast asleep for the night.
Hermione summoned his lime green cup from the nightstand, “Aguamenti.”
Thanks, Minnie,” he drank the half-full cup slowly so as not to spill on his sleep clothes. He handed the cup back to her as he snuggled back to her side. “You give the best snuggles,” Hermione kissed the top of his blonde locks. He smiled as she started reading again.
Draco knew that it’d only be a few more minutes before his son was fast asleep. Who could blame him? He also loved falling asleep next to Hermione. Quietly, she stood from the bed, pulling the covers up as she made her way over to Draco. She smiled as she wrapped her arms around his middle, head resting on his chest.
His right arm draped around her shoulders to pull her close as they watched Scorpius sleep. He kissed her temple, basking in her embrace. This was the life he wanted, one to share with Hermione.
He needed to be a little more Gryffindor and get down on his knee with the ring he’d picked out stashed away in his underwear drawer.
Soon, he’d have everything he’d ever wanted.
