Work Text:
In retrospect, Sgt. Faren knew he didn't need to take his men to clear out the monster camp the locals had reported. After all, Captain Taylor was reportedly in town, along with one of the kids who'd hung out with him during the war. (Tune? Odd name, but heroes were an odd lot by all accounts, and the Captain's brats had more than proven it.) And what was the point of being a hero if you didn't take care of everyone's problems?
Of course, the rumor mill also said he'd married a mage and had four more kids, so Faren was a little skeptical. Or would be, if one of the supposed quadruplets hadn't nearly set his cousin's bakery on fire six or eight months ago. The little missus had put out the flames with some sort of ice magic, apparently.
Still. It'd been a slow year and his men were getting antsy, so off they went, following the directions of the woodcutter who'd brought in the report.
The clash of metal on metal and cries of pain greeted them about a half mile from their destination. Faren called a halt. “Scouts,” he called, “go check that out.”
A pair of men nodded and trotted forward, blending into the treeline.
One of them reappeared about fifteen minutes later, a smirk warring with the professional expression on his face. He saluted and gave his report.
“Sarge, you have got to see this.”
Wind double-flipped over a moblin’s head and stabbed downward, catching the beast in the shoulder and ripping downward as he landed. A movement to one side caught his eye, and he nearly shouted to Vio to shoot it before recognizing the uniform. Crap. “Mom, Dad, we have company!” he called instead, not missing the confused look Wars and Legend shared before the realization set in.
Oh, Hylia.
Warriors glanced back, following Wind’s gaze, his mouth tightening as he spotted the unit insignia on the scout’s tunic. The captain sighed. “Seems we can’t get one day for ourselves, doesn’t it?” he said, stabbing a bokoblin that had tried to sneak up on Green.
“It certainly does,” Legend agreed. “Scarlet, 10 o’clock.”
“Yes, mama.” Red hefted his fire rod and sent a bolt straight into the crossbow of another moblin, catching the string on fire and lighting the explosive bolt set into it. The moblin panicked and shot straight upward; the bolt exploded harmlessly midair, but the distracted moblin didn’t fare as well. Green slashed its hamstring, and Vio’s bolt took it in the throat as it fell.
Warriors smiled at them, looking for all the world like a proud papa, then called out to the scouts. “Well? What are you waiting around for? Go get that useless sergeant of yours.”
The scouts shared a glance. One of them stood and saluted before, presumably, trotting back the way they'd come. The other grinned. “Good ta see ya, Captain. This the family we keep hearing about?”
Warriors scoffed and nodded. “It is. Good to see you too, Uslin. What are you doing in Faren's unit?”
“Being bored off my arse. Hey Tune.”
“Hey.” Wind waved, then ducked a swing. “Little help?”
“On it,” Green said, skewering the moblin from behind.
“Thanks, Olive.”
“Yer kids are impressive, Captain. Born fighters, the lot,” Uslin whistled, clearly impressed.
Legend chuckled. “You might say that.” He fired off another round with the ice wand, freezing the final bokoblin in its tracks. Wind finished it off.
“Hey Dad!” Uslin startled as a voice came from the tree above him. A boy appeared above him, dangling upside-down from a limb. “Grandpa's headed back with the others. And there's a bunch of knights crashing through the trees.” He waved at Uslin. “Hi, I'm Raven.”
Uslin waved back as Shadow grinned, righted himself, and floated down.
Warriors sighed. “Please go tell your grandfather we're done here. And no pranking the knights.”
“Yet,” Legend added, and just grinned at Warrior's glare. “What? This guy sounds like an ass.”
“You're not wrong, ma'am,” Uslin says. “If anything he's getting worse.”
“Oh, Hylia,” Wind groaned. “Faren was one of the ones who thought we should just hand Dad over to Cia to end the war. The only reason he wasn’t court martialed is because he’s a duke’s son and Artemis needed his father’s support.”
Legend grimaced. “Oh. He’s that kind of asshole. Raven?”
“Yeah, mom?”
“Don't get caught.”
Shadow grinned, his fangs showing. “Yes Mother.”
“Kit!” Warriors groaned, and Uslin laughed.
“Oh, I like her. Hey kid- Raven, right?- go easy on the private. That’s the short one with a blue stripe on his arm.” Uslin gestured. “He’s new and a good kid.”
“Yessir.” Shadow gave a mock salute and trotted off in Time’s direction. Legend watched him go, a thoughtful expression on his face, then grinned.
“Violet?”
“Yes mama?” Vio said, confused.
“Go with him.”
Vio grinned evilly and ran after Shadow. Warriors just sank his face into his hands and shook his head in defeat while Uslin cackled.
In the end, only about half of Faren’s squad actually made it to the clearing, including the private. (Shadow and Vio never admitted exactly what they’d done to the rest of them, but later on there would be rumors of a ‘mossmoblin incident’ that spread through the ranks. Legend cackles maniacally when Warriors mentions it.)
The rest of the Chain arrived a moment later, just as two moblin stragglers crashed the party, and so had a prime view of what happened.
A crossbow bolt appeared out of nowhere, zipping not two inches from Faren's ear to bury itself in the left-hand moblin’s shoulder. Red hit the other with a bout of flame from his rod. Blue and Green hit them from the sides, Green spearing the flaming one with his blade while Blue launched into the air, flipped once, and brought his hammer down squarely on his opponent's head.
Faren stood, shocked by the display. He glanced at Legend and Warriors, who hadn't even moved, then at the large group of armed and blood-covered men who'd joined them (and apparently had a giant wolf companion), apparently decided he valued his life more than his vendetta, spun on his heel, and left. His men followed, most of them waving at the group before running after their commander.
Legend and Warriors watched him go. “I think we broke him, darling,” Legend said, fluttering his eyelashes.
Warriors fought valiantly for a moment, but eventually cracked, his laugh ringing through the trees. “I think you’re right, dear,” he managed after a moment.
Time moved up next to Warriors. “Was that Faren?” he asked.
“Yep.”
“What did you do to him?”
“No idea. Ask Violet and Raven,” Wars shrugged.
“Ah.” He grinned and turned to the pair, who'd appeared from behind Faren’s troops to join their siblings. “Good job, you two.”
Vio and Shadow beamed back. “Thanks, Grandfather!”
In Warrior’s opinion, the look of horror on Time’s face made every one of the Violet incidents, hell, every prank of Mask’s he’d lived through, worth it. He reached over and ruffled Shadow’s hair. “Next time we’re in Castletown, the ice cream’s on me,” he said.
“Okay!” Shadow said, then, turning to his brother, “Hey Vio? What’s ice cream?”
As Vio’s explanation turned into a debate with Blue about flavors, Warriors glanced at Legend. The teen was watching them with a fond, if slightly exasperated, expression, and the captain chuckled.
You know, this whole family business might not be such a bad thing after all.
