Promises to Keep

Summary:

Years after the accident that tore their friendly rivalry apart, Myosotis, the Duke's childhood friend and personal guard, finds out that Licorys, the first sorcerer to ever survive mana overload and old rival, stepped foot once again on Academy grounds.
Myosotis is determined to confront him.

"What are you doing here?" Myosotis asks, stalking over to where Licorys sits, perched on the window bench, head burrowed in a book.

"I wonder what you mean, oh knight." He replies, voice light. Only his left side visible. "You know-" The taller man snatches the book from the redhead's hands, ignoring his protests. "You know exactly what I mean. How dare you show yourself here of all places?!"

Licorys raises his head, then, facing the taller man towering over him. "Can't I consult a library's books, now? Is it forbidden to me?"

Notes:

This is my first ever time writing anything at all and I am very nervous. English isn't my first language so please forgive any mistakes i have no respect for neither the English nor their language but writing in my mother tongue felt too cringe.

This is part of an original universe that only exists in my head which is inspired greatly by reincarnation and historical manhwas. I will most likely never continue writing anything public for it. Enjoy.

Work Text:

The early evening light shines sharp rays through the tinted glass of the academy's library's upper floor. A swirl of reds and blues colouring the scattered papers and books that lay on the floor of a dusty nook, forgotted by many.

Heavy footsteps echo in the hallway outside the door, the door bursting open with little regard of the peaceful library.

Is it forbidden to me?" His right side swirls calmly, as calm as uncontrolled mana itself can be. Myosotis flinches slightly at the sight. "After what you've done, it's surprising enough they haven't banned you from the Sorcerer's Order yet."

Licorys' laugh is more of a bark. "Oh, this old thing?" He gestures at himself with his clawed hand, reeling from Myosotis' snarl at it. "Hard to ban me for it when they are plotting to break the limit of mana themselves, now, is it?"

The knight glances away, looking towards the scattered documents and notes. "What is your buisness here? I thought I had told you to steer clear from this." From me. He implies.

The redhead cocks his head to the side, as if admiring the other man's features as the stained glass paints him in red light. His colour. "Haven't you heard, my dear Scorpion grass?" Myosotis scowls at the pet name. "I have been appointed a teacher at this very own academy. The class that will aim for the role of royal sorcerers, to be precise." His only visible eye squinting in mirth. "My pupils could very well be those who will provide mana to your squadron-" Myosotis grabs him by the collar before he's able to finish the sentence. The sorcerer's eye flaring for a second, before the mana returns to its playful swirls around it. The lights from the window almost in a vortex of red and blues battling for dominance.

Myosotis brings Licorys closer. Their noses almost touching as he snarls. "You shouldn't be trusted with anything, let alone your own students."

Licorys laughs, it's sharp and cruel, and bells ring in Myosotis' memory of a burning house and a bleeding eye. "Aren't you glad we'll be working together again, my forget-me-not?" He scowls momentarely as Myosotis tightens his grip. Licorys notices Myosotis' free hand tight in a fist, trembling. "No one's mana has ever been as compatible as mine, hasn't it?"

The knight growls as his hand reaches for his sword. "Watch it." Licorys grins sharply, all angles and mocking. His voice low, akin to a seductive whisper. "You miss it. I know you do. I've never syncronized with anyone else, you know? My mana has only ever touched you. Us."

"I should bite your tongue off, that'll shut you up." The knight replies in a strangled tone. Their lips a breath away. "Don't make promises you can't keep." The sorcerer returns in kind.

"Stay out of my way, Licorys." Myosotis shoves him away, releasing him from his grip and turning to walk out of the room.

"Something about promises and keeping them." Licorys calls out as the man departs. Leaving the door open. The light from the window now painting the room red.

He adjusts the collar of his blouse, before brushing shaking fingers against his lips. "What bad habits you have, my dear." He whispers as he stares at the open door. Closing it, then, with a flick of his wrist.
