Chapter 1: There's a storm here to weather

Chapter Text

Having postings to different Shatterdomes was a thing that could happen. No matter what your job was, there was always a risk that you could be moved up and away, with or without your team and end up in a completely different city. Or country. Thankfully they hadn't managed to conquer space travel before the Kaiju came and fucked everything up because he didn't fancy living om a completely different planet to his family.

Having to get a plane, and organise time for everyone to be in the same space together was bad enough when they only had to contend with giant alien monsters and travelling across oceans. Adding in Space to that would give everyone too much of an excuse to not visit.

And make it all the more difficult for Newt to be in the same vague area occasionally. Work had allowed them to be closer this time more than ever- the joys of packing up the entire science division from one Shattersome and shunting them a four hour flight away from another science team in another Shatterdome.

Which meant, of course, Newt had some leave that he had managed to sneak in there. And 5 days. Five entire days where he could make seeing Hermann and arguing with him in person instead of leaving snarky comments on every chapter of every paper he was planning to publish - " peer reviewing ", Newt called it, being a bit of a twat, Hermann had labelled it. And they got to do this in person now. Well, for a short period of time before they had to get back to the real world and their real problems of giant alien lizards.

So when the doors from the arrivals gate opened, and Hermann caught sight of the mess of black hair, rolled up shirt sleeves showing off those tattoos and heard obnoxious rock music blasting from the headphones around Newts neck, Hermann forgot all about the carefully written sign welcoming Newt here. He almost forgot his stick in his haste, thankful he'd remembered to put the strap around his wrist in preparation or it would have clattered to the floor when he jerked forward to pull Newt into a hug. " Mein gott, Newton." He managed to mumble, before not so gracefully sticking his head into Newts neck, keeping him held close. The arms snaking around his waist and pulling him closer still were answer enough for everything contained in those three words.; thank God you're here, I'm glad you seem to have survived the flight without too much trouble, oh God you're closer to me than you have been in years, finally i get to hug you like this…

Hermann didn't think the hug would end, both of them holding on so tightly but eventually they loosened and stepped back enough to be able to talk properly with each other. "I believe there's some Ikea furniture hastily put together in the corner of my room with your name on it. " He had a small smile that grew when Newt took hold of his outstretched arm.

Who knows what the future would hold in the long run, but for now he had Newton with him. The world after the next five days be damned, he was going to enjoy this time.
