Nimona doesn’t even know why they are repacking the bag to begin with. This crisis could have been avoided! But no, Ballister decided he was going to have guard duty in the upper caste for the next three days! Even Ambrosius didn’t want THAT.
Going back to staring at the bag, Nimona finally decided to open it. Maybe she would feel better about it if she looked through it. Carefully taking everything out of the bag and laying it all out, they realized there are only five things in the bag.
An old coin, a feather, her wanted poster, a blanket and the newest addition, a photo.
The coin was from Gloreth, long before she turned against Nimona Gloreth had given her a lucky coin, something that could bring good luck to whoever had it. The feather was from the biggest bird they had ever seen, it was so nice to Nimona, especially if she shifted into something similar, bringing her under its wing.
The last three items were things she had gotten in the last few years, A wanted poster that had both Nimona and Ballister on it, with big bold letters spelling “WANTED VILLAINS” it's the first real picture of them together.
The fourth item they don’t even know why it is in the bag, its a gift, a blanket from Ambrosius, for living with the two of them for an entire year instead of coming and going every so often. The blanket was commissioned from the fanciest blanket maker Nimona knows of, but its so soft and fluffy and nice of him to show he cared about her, and its amazing to be wrapped in when sad. Its stupid.
The fifth item, the photo, was what she was putting in the bag today, its a photo they got printed yesterday and framed today. It was Ambrosius, Ballister and her together at some weird festival. It was fun.
A knock at the door had them shoving the things into the backpack before telling whoever was outside that they could come in. It was Ballister.
He had the audacity to show up even though he was going to leave, was he here to shove it in their face. He wouldn’t do that, he wouldn't.
“Hey, I noticed you didn’t come down for lunch so I brought you a plate.” he said as he closed the door and turned to face her. “ I also have good news- what's with the angry face?” setting the plate on Nimonas dresser, he approached where Nimona sat on the floor. The two of them stared at each other for a few seconds after he sat down next to them.
“What angry face? What's the good news? Are you leaving for a week?” Nimmona snarked, red creaping from their neck.
“Do you want me to leave for a week?” Ballister said softly, he knew the answer but wanted nimona to think it through, why would he leave for such a long time?
“No but you're gonna do it so why tell me it's good news?” the anger in her eyes increased as they switched forms to a bear.
“I'm not going to leave you forever, its just a few days.” He wouldn’t let any exasperation bleed through.
“But what if something happens” Nimona thought back to the time the two of them paraded around the castle when they first met.
“Its the innermost part of the castle i’ll be fine and come back in one piece”
“But-”
“No buts’. I came in here to tell you I will only be gone one night, but two days,” a happy smile covered his features.
“Wait, really?” Nimona perked up.
“Yes! I won't leave you.” Ballister said, reassuring her for the last time.
“Okay.” Nimona switched back to human form and rested her head against Ballister shoulder.
