Work Text:
“Hey, I’m pretty sure Grey won’t need me until later. Maybe I can swing by the food trucks and find us real breakfast.” Tim suggests as they walk through the empty parking garage. Lucy chuckles beside him and taps his hand slightly. That morning they had decided to skip breakfast and instead feast on each other. It probably wasn’t the best idea for their stomachs but it was great for their sex life.
“I mean, if you insist.” Lucy says, causing him to chuckle.
“Yes, I insist. Fuel is important.” He says more quietly. She blushes and ducks her head so as to not give him the satisfaction. They wait for the elevator, standing close but still keeping it PG. When they step out of the elevator and onto the main floor, Grey seems to be waiting. He immediately takes a step to them and gives them a soft welcoming smile.
“Bradford, I’m going to need you to sit in on the meeting today. I’m scheduled for a phone call meeting with the press at the same time and won’t be able to make it. It is in about thirty-five minutes in the large conference room.” Grey quickly explains. Tim parts his mouth and glances at Lucy.
“It’s okay, I’m sure I can find some weak coffee and a day-old donut in the break room.” Lucy smiles out before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“Go ahead and go get dressed out.” Grey says while motioning to the hallway. Tim nods and quickly rushes off. “Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask you Chen, how’s it riding with Juarez?” He asks as the both slowly walk down the hall.
“Oh, it’s actually really nice. I mean, I can’t speak for her but I feel as if she’s learning a lot.” Lucy says and nods along. Grey makes a soft noise of pleasure and nods with her.
“That’s great to hear.” He says just as they arrive at the break room door.
“Get them while they're still there.” Smitty chuckles out just as he’s walking out the break room. A half eaten cookie in one hand, another brand new cookie in his other, and crumbs falling from the corners of his mouth onto his uniform. Grey turns to Lucy with raised eyebrows and motions for her to enter. John is sitting at the small table with Celina and Aaron, the three chatting away and munching on sugar cookies. Celina and Aaron have the same food palate as little kids so they have about three cookies each. John is happily content with just his one.
“My mother used to make cookies just like this except these just….have a certain taste to them.” John says before taking another bite and carefully examining the taste.
“Just eat the free cookie.” Aaron snorts out. “Delicious in my books.”
“Who brought them in?” Lucy asks as she gets a mug and pours herself a cup of coffee.
“Mmmm, I don’t know. Smitty was already scavenging through them when I got here.” Celina says before taking a big bite.
“It was probably Wriggley’s wife, she loves to bake and occasionally brings some in.” Lucy throws out.
“She does make an amazing triple chocolate brownie.” Grey chimes in before serving himself a cookie. Lucy grabs a napkin and gets herself a cookie before joining everyone else.
“You still have paperwork from last night.” Lucy gently reminds Celina. The rookie nods and quickly eats her cookie. The five eat and make small conversation before parting ways. Lucy off to get changed, John off to give Bailey a call, Celina off to do paperwork, Wade off to answer a call, and Aaron off to do some of his own work. Lucy quickly gets dressed out, spending no more than she needs to on her hair. She's leaving the locker and it's then she hears it. She only hears it for a moment though, an almost thumping sound. As she continues it progressively gets worse, to the point it’s blaring in her ears. Lucy looks around to see if anyone else can hear it but it’s like everyone has started to walk in slow motion. Her world spins for a moment before she’s colliding into a firm body.
“Woah, you okay?” A familiar voice asks but it sounds clouded for a moment until she finds his piercing blue eyes. Lucy immediately notices that his eyebrows are in a frown and his mouth is slightly turning down in concern.
“Ummm.” Is all she really says before looking around once more.
“Lucy?” He says firmly, trying to get her attention. She snaps her head back to him and the thumping sound comes back. It’s in a rhythm but now she feels the thumping in her chest too. “Maybe you should-”
“Leave? Yeah, okay.” She quietly mumbles before turning to slowly leave.
“Where are you going?” Tim shouts after her. She waves him off and walks through the bullpen slowly. She spots another trusted adult, Nyla. She immediately grabs her arm and begins to drag her away.
“What the-” Nyla mumbles. “Chen, what are you doing?” She confusedly asks. Lucy says nothing before taking her into an empty interrogation room, her eyes wide and her world spinning.
“I-I think that I am going to….pass away.” She says, her tone coming out oddly calm.
“What?” Nyla immediately asks, taking a step closer to examine her.
“My heart is pounding! I-I can hear it a-and I feel a little dizzy.” Lucy admits. “And….” She looks around and leans in a little more closer to Nyla. “I think my eyes aren’t really brown.” She quietly admits. Nyla stares because Chen must be on something. That idea comes out as just a possibility but seems to be literal. Nyla reaches for Lucy’s flashlight and turns it on. She flashes it in Lucy’s eyes before sighing heavily.
“What did you take?” Nyla asks. Lucy blows out a breath and slumps against the interrogation room table.
“Psychology.” She answers honestly. Nyla shuts her eyes and rubs her head for a moment.
“No Lucy, did you take anything? A pill? Did you accidentally breathe something in? Smoke something?” Nyla questions her. Lucy thinks about it for a good five seconds before shaking her head. Nyla frowns and once again shines the light on Lucy’s eyes.
“Tell me the truth….are they falling out?” Lucy asks with so much concern. Nyla turns the flashlight off and can see that Lucy’s eyes have become glossy and are a little red.
“No.” She answers, causing Lucy to sigh in relief. “But your pupils look like they’re about to explode.”
“What!?” Lucy shouts, her eyes widening.
“Dilated!” Nyla clarifies. Lucy huffs out short breaths and nods, then shutting her eyes for a moment. “Okay…you didn’t smoke or take anything. I’m guessing you haven’t gone out on patrol yet since you barely got in some time ago. Ummm, did you eat or drink anything?” She continues to ask. Nyla looks at Lucy for a response but her eyes are still shut.
“Nyla….” Lucy says quietly but full of emotion. “I can’t see.” She blows out.
“Try opening your eyes.” Nyla calmly says. Lucy nods and opens them, an emotion of relief washing over her face.
“It worked.” She says before swallowing hard. Clearly Lucy is having a hard time with whatever drug she’s on.
“Okay….i'm just going to empty your gun now.” Nyla says before slowly reaching to grab Lucy’s gun. Lucy is still trying to take deep breaths. Nyla takes out the magazine and empties the chamber before putting Lucy’s gun back into the holster. Lucy blinks slowly and long.
“Nyla it happened again.” Lucy almost shouts.
“Open your eyes.” Nyla tried to stay cool but just hates being around high people if they are the nervous type.
“It’s not working.” Lucy insists but her eyes are still just. Nyla reaches to her face and tries to pry them open but Lucy is shutting them pretty tight.
“Open your eyes!” Nyla loudly says just as the door opens. Lucy’s eyes immediately burst open and Nyla has to quite literally get off Lucy. She clears her throat a little and gives Tim a firm head nod of acknowledgment.
“What’s going on?” Tim slowly asks.
“My eyes.” Lucy quietly mumbles beside Nyla. Nyla quickly moves to shut the door, making Tim even more surprised.
“What did she eat this morning?” Nyla immediately questions him.
“We haven’t eaten anything.” Tim defensively says.
“Well Bradford, your girlfriend is as high as a kite!” Nyla informs him, pointing directly to Lucy.
“I am not!” Lucy shouts with innocence. Tim looks very taken aback because this doesn’t seem like Lucy at all.
“Her pupils look like she’s just seen you without a shirt on, she’s high. I don’t know what she’s ingested and neither does she.” Nyla huffs out. Tim has to take a moment to process before stepping up. Lucy silks and takes a seat.
“Okay, we need to figure out whatever she ate and make sure nobody else has ingested it.” Tim says, Nyla nodding along. Nyla puts her hands together and gently approaches Lucy.
“Lucy…I need you to tell me exactly everything you’ve eaten today.” Nyla politely requests. Lucy thinks for a moment and soon her eyes nervously glance at Tim. She eyes him up and down and sinks into her seat. She bites her bottom lip for a moment before leaning closer to Nyla.
“Everything?” Lucy whispers to her before she glances at Tim again.
“Oh my god.” Tim quietly mumbles beside Nyla, throwing his hands up in frustration. Nyla physically cringes and shakes her head.
“Food, Lucy.” Nyla clarifies.
“Oh! That makes more sense.” Lucy stares up at the ceiling for a moment before nodding. “I…had a coffee and a cookie from the break room.” Nyla freezes before taking a deep breath.
“Dammit, one job.” Nyla angrily mumbles to herself. “Take the damn cookies as evidence so that I can process the suspect.” She says more angrily.
“Wait, wait, wait. What are you talking about?” Tim questions Nyla. She huffs out a breath before turning to him.
“I made a bust, dude illegally selling pot cookies. Pretty routine stuff but…I should have known. I gave the damn cookies to Smitty and told him to log them.” Nyla admits. Tim’s eyes bug out for a moment. He processes the new information once more and nods.
“Alright. Lucy, who ate the cookies?” He asks. She takes a moment and slightly giggles.
“Who didn’t.” She shrugs off with a grimace. Silence falls in the room before Tim digs his face into his hands.
“We need to round everyone up and see who the lucky ones are that can continue their shift.” Tim sighs out.
“Oh…” Lucy says more quietly.
“Oh?” Nyla immediately questions.
“We should probably get Grey down here.” Lucy says before snorting out a laugh.
“Yes, we need to inform him of the outbreak and see what we need to do.” Nyla says confidently.
“No…I meant…make sure he isn’t on shift.” Lucy says with a grimace this time.
“I need to round him before he picks up that phone from the press! Watch her please!” Tim shouts before running out. The door is left wide open and Lucy is a little tempted on making a run.
“Don’t even think about it.” Nyla says before going to close the door again. She stops mid-shut when she notices Aaron standing in the middle of the hallway, a smile on his face as he stares up at the awards. “Aaron…” She skeptically says. He turns around and an even larger smile appears.
“Oh! Nyla!” He happily says before going to give her a hug. She allows him because she has a feeling that he might’ve had a cookie too.
“Is this one of our cookie culprits?” Nyla asks Lucy who immediately nods. “Okay, come on Aaron. Let’s get you a seat and I can explain.” She guides him to a chair and shuts the door
“I had three cookies.” Aaron smiles out. “They were very good.”
“Three?” Nyla worriedly asks. He nods happily and sighs.
“Did I tell you they were very good?” He asks. Nyla can see he must have a high tolerance because he just seems a little too happy but is pretty much okay. Lucy on the other hand looks like she’s going insane. Her eyes are tightly shut and she’s covering her ears. The door opens and in comes Grey and Tim.
“Chips…I want some.” Grey softly says.
“Yeah, we can get you some chips.” Tim softly says, patting the older man’s shoulder and guiding him into the interrogation room. Nyla runs out to get the leftover cookies and Tim works hard to get access to the cameras and see who exactly has had some. Grey and Aaron are discussing the different types of chips and what kind are they’re favorites.
“I find vegetable straw chips to be quite good actually but…you can’t tell Luna.” Grey mentions, then swearing everyone to secrecy.
“Hey!” Nolan pouts as Nyla forcefully guides him into the interrogation room.
“I found another culprit, he was going back for seconds but luckily I got to him before he could.” Nyla informs Tim.
“Everyone is accounted for except Smitty and Juarez.” Tim sighs out.
“Celina!?” Aaron asks loudly.
“You kiss her again?” Grey teases him, making Nyla and Tim groan.
“It’s a party in here.” Angela says from the open door. “Big case?”
“Yeah, the cookie culprits.” Nyla huffs out. It flies over their head for a moment before she snaps her head to search the room, counting heads. “Oh god. Where’s Chen?” Tim immediately stands up and also looks around.
“Watch them please, they’re higher than Mount Everest and Lucy ran off.” Nyla quickly says to Angela before rushing out. She runs down the hallway to catch Lucy slinking away into another. She's staring straight ahead, speed walking and eyes wide open. “Lucy!” Nyla calls out but Lucy only glances before hurrying off. “You need to come back.” Nyla says as she catches up.
“I’ve never been high before.” Lucy whispers to her.
“Really?” Nyla asks. She would’ve thought in a past college life Lucy might’ve experimented once or twice.
“I just need to be alone right now.” Lucy sighs out.
“Okay, that’s not a good idea. You need to be with people who can take care of you because you're obviously freaking out.” Nyla says while gently tugging on her arm back to the interrogation room. Lucy nods and stays still for a moment.
“I think….I don’t need my eyes anymore.” Lucy says before swallowing hard.
“Yes you do.” Nyla gently says before leading her back. When the two get back, Celina is now there, staring at herself in the double sided mirror.
“I found your other cookie culprit staring at the stairs. She hasn’t mumbled a peep but Aaron’s saying she also ate three cookies. I’m guessing she’s never experimented with pot before and three was way too many cookies.” Angela fills Nyla in. Tim had put an APB out on Smitty and started calling people. He called Bailey for John, Luna for Wade, and Aaron’s mom. Angela went to gather snacks for the group because they all had the munchies, of course having to bring chips. John happily got picked up by Bailey and was smiling ear to ear, claiming to have the best wife on the planet. Up next was Aaron who’s mom gently guided him out of the station in promise to get him a brand new pair of expensive shoes. When Luna showed up for Wade, he immediately gushed over his wife. He waved goodbye and took a bag of chips with him.
“I should probably take these two back to the apartment. Let me know when Smitty turns up?” Tim asks.
“Yeah, we’ll find him.” Angela assures him.
“Either in a closet taking a nap or across the country having no clue how he got there.” Nyla adds. Celina has sort of come around although her eyes are cherry red. Tim has to buckle the two in and then again has to help them out of his truck. Celina immediately goes to crash on her bed, knocking out cold and softly snoring. Meanwhile Lucy is raiding the fridge, mixing food moaning at the taste. She even successfully gets Tim to try some. Eventually Tim gets her to sit and watch some cartoons. She’s laughing her ass off about Tom getting hit in the face with a rake while trying to chase Jerry. Tim is watching her but has to fight back a laugh as she laughs some more. She pouts when a commercial comes up and tries to skip it but it doesn’t work. She pouts once more and leans back, arms crossed over her chest.
“I don’t like being high.” She quietly mumbles.
“Well…I’m pretty sure that’s a good thing.” Tim mumbles back. She shakes her head and twists her fingers.
“It reminded of me of…THAT day.” She quietly says. Tim thinks back to her completely being out of it as everyone was trying to be located. He makes a soft sound and brings her into his side.
“Well…this was caused by Smitty and now you're at home watching Tom and Jerry. You’re safe.” He reassures her.
“I know.” She says quietly before nuzzling her head into his neck, still keeping her eyes on the commercial. They watch the cartoon quietly for some time before Tim’s phone dings. He picks it up and snorts.
Angela: Found on interstate five and completely intact.
Along with the text she sends three thumbs up and a picture of Smitty. His eyes are wide like he has seen some things and his mouth parted in terror but he has a large soda cup in his hand. Tim calls it successful enough.
