The Value of a Soul

Summary:

Born a woman with a desire to learn and help others. Died burned at the stake by ignorant fools who were afraid of change.

Unwilling to take this fate lying down, you make a deal. Your damned soul was a small price to pay for the ability to carve out your own space in Pentagram City.

Now, many years later, the dealer has come to collect. Your one goal is to observe and protect her daughter as she struggles toward this dream of redeeming souls.

What will happen when the King of Hell makes an unexpected, and permanent, appearance?
Will you continue to follow the demands of your contractor as they slowly begin to contradict with your own wishes? Or will you fight for freedom and a chance of a new, brighter, future?

Chapter Text

Shouts and cheers filled the square as your body was tied to the pyre, cheers from those you had helped just days before. You did not hate them, for they were ignorant. The common folk opposing this execution would have simply led to their deaths. Same with your parents, nobles who did their best to raise you as a proper lady.

Arts, music, military strategy, how to manage a household, and even armed combat. Everything you needed to be married into a good family, simultaneously raising your status and their own, but you were curious as to what else existed beyond the confines of this societal mold you were forced into.

Becoming a scholar was out of the question, but that did not stop you from getting what you wanted. Gatherings of high society were the best places to learn new information, and all it took was listening, a few properly placed words, and some of your own personal allowances to gain access to the nearby university’s archives. Literature on astronomy and the physical sciences were exciting, but what you found truly interesting were the disregarded medical texts. Books criticized or outright banned by the church for reasons you could never fully understand.

It was not a bad life, much better than the poor scrounging for scraps or fighting on the front lines in the name of some lord, but you could not help feeling that you could do more with what you were given.

Knowledge was power, and you wished to share this power with the masses. It was simple enough. Sneaking away, disguising yourself in the clothes of your handmaid, and intermingling with the masses. Very few cared about learning to read and write, so instead you started with remedies and cures for common ailments. This was first met by fear, the idea being scorned by the church because to them ‘prayer and devotion were the true fixes of all illnesses’.

Utterly ridiculous, those of the church are just as educated as me. They know there are ways to help people, but they would rather force them to follow their faith. Results brought about a new mentality as those who rested and consumed the proper herbs healed much faster than those who did not. Word spread fast, and soon enough each visit was met with more and more people seeking help, which in turn led to you needing to bring more materials. It felt good, helping them, using your privilege to do more than to sit around and look pretty.

Unfortunately, good things do not last. Illness had spread through the city, and while you had done your best to help, the few resources at your disposal did little to alleviate the suffering of the people. Obviously, worship and prayers did nothing either, and they needed someone to blame, a scapegoat to placate the desperate and angry citizens.

It all came crashing down when the knights knocked on your family's door, demanding to take you in on the accusation of heresy, consorting with the devil, and witchcraft. Normally they would target someone of lesser standing, but inner circles spoke too much, you were careless with who you trusted, and now it had led to this. Your parents had begged and pleaded, but they were powerless in comparison to the church. I hope they will not be there to watch… They did not deserve to witness the church make you into an example.

The ‘trial’ was a sham. They would say you created this illness through devil worship to lead the unsuspecting citizens astray. An obvious lie that no one was foolish enough to contradict. It was a manufactured spectacle as they brought forth various witnesses.

“Liar!” Screamed the shopkeeper, whose frequent headaches would surely return if he stopped taking the herbs you provided.

A mother clutched her surviving children close, the ones you saved. “She tricked us!”

“We were deceived by the witch!” The chorus of accusations continued, some by those you knew, others by people you had never met.

I hope they do not disregard everything after this….

You did not deny the allegations, all too aware that they would force a confession out one way or another. This was your choice, you knew the risks after all, and your only wish was that these decisions and this scandal would die with you.

“Heretic!”

“Burn the witch!”

A sad display of ignorance as their chants continued, even as the fire began to spread, lapping ever closer while the smoke burned your lungs.  It was not their fault. No, the uneducated did not know any better. The ones who drew your ire, your wrath, were the men who clutched to their crosses with eyes filled with disgust, hatred, and understanding. They knew you were no witch, but rather than accept the possibility of advancement, they chose control.

Fools are easier to manipulate after all.

You hated the fact that, in the end, nothing you did really mattered.

Is this my punishment? For wanting more?

They still had all the power, over the people, over the noble houses, and over you.

Anger burned inside, as furious as the fires scarring your flesh. You hated feeling weak, powerless, small, unable to avoid this fate as those above mercilessly touted their influence.

Maybe I do deserve Hell, at least then I can make these bastards pay when they arrive.

That bitter consolation was your final thought before you were granted the sweet release of death.

You were surprised to find that the eternal darkness did not remain.

Wind cut across your face, and your eyes opened at the stomach-churning sensation of falling. You were somehow in the air, careening toward the ground at terrifying speeds. There was no time to scream, only a brief moment to brace for the painful impact. It hurt just as much as you expected, but what startled you the most was that it did not end in your death. But I already died… The execution, and the fire-

You frantically look around, covering your mouth to block out the overpowering smell of brimstone. High above was the red sky you fell from, unlike any sunrise or sunset you had seen before, and the thick red lines cutting through the clouds did not seem natural.

Is this… the afterlife? Who knew it was actually real… You look down at your hands, dark nails blending into the charred coloring of your hands that creeped up to your elbows, a permanent reminder of the punishment that brought you here. You shakily stand, noticing the small crater that formed at your unceremonious arrival, but there were no notable injuries to your body. The surrounding city was unfamiliar, but consisted of buildings not unlike where you were from. In the distance were the chaotic sounds of fighting, but what drew your attention were the monsters that walked through the streets.

Creatures of varying size, color, and appearance. Each one was unique and terrifying in their own way. Are those… demons? Am I a demon? You twist around, trying to get a better view of your new form. It was difficult to see without a mirror, but you caught a brief glimpse of a set of wings protruding from your back. That is impossible… But they were very much real, and as your hand reached back to gently touch the opalescent, membranous wings you understood exactly what had happened.

You were dead, this was the afterlife, and by the red lighting and demonic creatures you could assume that you were sent to Hell. There is no point in mourning my death, damnation is what they said my punishment was after all. At first no one cared about your sudden appearance in the middle of the street, as if it was a common occurrence. Maybe it is. There must be some place I can go to find out more-

The sound of approaching footsteps interrupted your planning as a large demon leered over your smaller frame. How are they so tall? Am I the only one who kept my height from when I was alive? You took a hesitant step back, the hungry gleam in his eyes a telltale sign of dubious intentions. “Who are you? What is this place?” Your voice remained firm, certain that any sign of weakness would lead to disastrous consequences.

“Just a Sinner here to help the poor little madam.” They spoke in a strange dialect, but the words came across all the same.

Sinner? Is that what we are called? Your brows furrow. “I do not need ‘help’ Sir, I am simply trying to find some place where I can learn about this world.”

“Ha! I am afraid you will not find anything like that here. Everyone fends for themselves, doing what they want when they want.” His eyes rake across your body in a way that makes your skin crawl, and the degrading tone causes your irritation to grow.

“Then it appears this conversation is pointless. Good day.” You try to walk around, only for them to step in the same direction.

“Now what is with this hostility? I am only trying to help you-” He reached forward to grab your arm, an action you were not too pleased with.

As if controlled by your subconscious, the wings on your back buzzed to life, propelling you just out of reach of the now irate ‘Sinner’.

I need to get out of here. You looked around, trying to find an escape, but you were surrounded by buildings and did not have the confidence to fly away. What do I do- I have no sword or spear, and I would be a fool to think I could beat them in hand to hand combat-

“You wench! Come back here!”

The time to think was over, as the demon lunged forward, but they once again grasped empty air as you moved out of the way. Is this going to be my new life? Constantly fighting for survival? A sickening feeling rose up in the pit of your stomach. Am I going to be a victim again and again? Your pulse quickened as they drew a sword from seemingly nowhere, swinging it around with the skilled precision of a soldier.

No.

You shoved aside the fear, your movements quickening as you continued to avoid their strikes.

This time will be different, I will find a way to win. Someone somewhere in this city will have answers, I just need to survive long enough to find them. You knew that the outcome of this confrontation would solidify your life in this unknown world, and fleeing was no longer an option. They may be bigger and stronger, but I am faster. You danced out of the way, noticing the increasing irritation of your opponent, their moves becoming more erratic with each missed swing. I will not lose again, whatever it takes. It was a silent vow as you fought for your life, that your death was the last time you would be a victim.

Now! They swung to the side, and you dove under, raking your sharp nails across their exposed arm. The warm stickiness of blood was disgusting, but you could not deny the satisfaction of their shocked shout as the blade clattered to the ground. They were now defenseless, and as you hovered behind them, a voice spoke in the back of your mind.

‘Finish it’. But could the dead die again? Somehow the answer was clear, you would not be able to kill them, but you could take their soul. This time, you would not fall victim to those who were ‘stronger’. As dark energy surrounded your clenched fist, you recalled the bitter regret of your freshly past life, anger and resentment fueled your motion, but it was a surprise when your hand pierced cleanly through their body.

You looked down at the crumpled form of the one who tried to attack you, then at the soul floating above your palm, the pitiful light flickering about was the true colors of the brute. There were no instructions, the magic flowing from your body to bind the soul to yours was as natural as breathing, and even with such a pathetic soul you could feel an increase in power. Not physical power per say, but something resonating within the core of your very being.

The defeated Sinner turned to look at you with shock and fear, fully aware as to what transpired. As satisfying as their reaction was, you knew that there are others who were much stronger, ones who would not hesitate to tear you down if given the chance.

“Now.” You leaned down, speaking in a sweet and innocent tone that seemed to unnerve them further. “There must be someone who is in charge. All kingdoms need a ruler, so where are they?” A hand rose, shakily pointing toward a tall spire in the distance. A castle? You nod in satisfaction, leaving behind the fractured soul to contemplate their new existence.

I should stay hidden… who knows how powerful some of these Sinners are. Sticking to the shadows, you eventually make it to the manor situated on the edge of the City. Strange… normally noble's houses are located within the center or at least have walls of some sort. There was also a surprising lack of guards. Are they really so powerful that they do not require protection? It was a frightening thought, but you were not going to be detoured.

The spires rose high in the air in an intimidating display, and you were surprised when the small horned creature at the door simply bowed before pushing it open. Do they just let anyone in? The tapping of your footsteps on the hard stone floor echoed within the otherwise silent building, until you reached what you assumed to be the audience chamber. Another set of small red creatures stood on either side of the doorway.

“I have come to seek an audience with the leaders of this place.” You addressed the guard with the courteousness drilled into your memory. This may be Hell, but you are still a proper lady.

They glanced at each other, and pushed opened the doors to reveal an elegant throne room. While two chairs sat atop the small flight of stairs, only one was occupied. A queen with no king? Is he away on business or war?

She was unnaturally tall, with luscious golden hair adorned with a crown and large horns. The woman carried herself as one of her station should, proud and sure of the power she held over others.

You swiftly lowered your head in a deep curtsy. “Greetings, I apologize for the intrusion, but I have recently arrived, and thought it only proper to greet the rulers of this kingdom.” There was a moment of silence. Did I offend her? Are there certain customs within Hell that are different from home?

The queen finally spoke, her voice a smooth cadence over the silent air. “It has been a while since anyone has visited, and even longer still since anyone so… refined.” You stood unmoving as she descended the stairs, her calculating eyes boring into your flesh. “Tell me, what do you want?”

The question hung in the air, for here in Hell wants and desires could become reality. Your mind unwillingly returned to your death. I was ignorant before, thinking that simply helping others would lead to any improvement. No, if I want to truly change then I will have to reach the top. While you were alive, you learned about economics and what was required to be an affluent member of society. You knew there was potential to increase your power through the procurement of souls, but you needed more, something that would bring them to you without unnecessary violence.

“I seek knowledge. Knowledge about this world, and how to use these… powers to their full potential, and the funds to establish myself.” Your eyes remained fixed to the floor, unsure if such a request would lead to another swift and painful death.

A hand reached out, lifting your head until a pair of cold, calculating eyes stared into yours. “Interesting, most simply wish for money or power, and look at you, freshly fallen but still in possession of a soul. It was not through a contract though so how did you obtain it?” It was as if she was studying some creature, not another human being.

You decided it would be best to tell the truth. “They attacked me, I fought back and defeated them.”

“Is that so? The innate ability to control other souls is quite rare…” She released your face, standing to her full height. “I will grant your wish, but you have to give me your soul in return.”

“My soul? Would that not make me a slave? What is the point of granting my wish if I cannot use it?” The accusational question came out sharper than you intended, but the queen did not seem to mind.

“Oh I have no need of you right now, but when the time comes you will have to obey my requests.” You sensed no deceit in her words, and the answer was as clear as day.

You straighten up, locking eyes with your new Lady. “I agree to your terms. My soul for complete knowledge of this realm, how to use my abilities to gain more power, and adequate funds to obtain my goals.”

She nodded in satisfaction, extending a hand in your direction. “Then we have a deal.”

Your hand took hers, and an almost painful flash of light filled the room. A golden piece of parchment appeared, the words recently spoken etched in black ink, and beneath it all sat your name. Purplish red chains briefly appeared around your wrists and neck before disappearing, and you could feel that something was now missing.

A small price to pay- What you did not expect was the intense pain that accompanied the flood of knowledge. Sinners, angels, Hellborn, and other creatures that resided within Hell. The other six Rings, each ruled by a powerful Sin, and none of which you would ever be able to visit. You clasped the sides of your head, a pained scream echoing against the stone walls as you fell to your knees, but you would not give in.

This is what you wished for after all.

Soul contracts and manipulation, the ability to use magic to both create and destroy, all of it was brought to light. Each minute detail that could be used in your efforts to rise above the others.

Eventually the pain faded, and for a moment you remained breathless, slowly processing everything that happened.

“The deal is done, now take this and go. I will call for you when the time comes.” Lilith, the first woman and Queen of Hell, waved dismissively before returning to her throne, its twin perpetually empty as Lucifer, fallen seraphim and King of Hell, generally chose to sequester himself away from the tainted souls of Sinners.

There was a blinding glow before a silver mirror appeared, the runes etched on the surface marking it as a communication device. You stood, straightening your blouse before curtseying once again. “Thank you, your Majesty.” The doors closed with a loud thud, and you left the manor with a new goal, unaware of the curious gaze watching your departure.

Now it is time to establish myself, and the first step is a place to live…. A manor would be too grandiose. You chose a spot not too far from where you first arrived, a regular ‘falling ground’ it seemed, though souls could fall anywhere within the city. Your mind drifted to the different businesses within your home city. Luxuries such as florists and tailors will not get me the amount of souls I need, and medicine is unnecessary if we cannot die… It was then an idea occurred to you. If you wanted knowledge so desperately that you traded your soul, what is to say others are not willing to do the same? Maybe not knowledge about all of Hell and magic, but other Sinners? Rumors and weaknesses that could lead to someone’s downfall? Those were the things people in high society craved, so why would Hell be any different?

It did not take long for the building to be completed. A tavern, much like the ones from the living world, stood proudly between the other businesses. You walked into the place you would now call home. The downstairs contained various tables, a small stage for performances, and a large bar that could hold ample supplies. There was also a back space that could be used for private meetings, but that would remain unused for some time. The upstairs was a private space containing a bed, desk, and bookshelf. It was far from luxurious, but at the moment you did not require anything else. And it is better than sleeping on the streets or other inns.

You wandered toward the mirror, and for the first time saw your new hellish form.

Two sets of wings rested against your back instead of one, the red lighting of Hell giving them an almost fiendish glow. Your hair stretched down into a haphazard mess, which you quickly fixed into a proper plate, noticing the now-pointed ears sticking through. Atop your head sat a pair of antennae which gently bobbed with each motion. Your large, round, eyes gave an almost innocent appearance that seemed out of place in this plane of eternal torment.

You looked fragile, weak.

And you hated it.

What cruel irony is this? That this is the form I was given for the rest of eternity? You sneered at the reflection, revealing a collection of pointed teeth. “Well, there is nothing that can be done so I might as well accept it now.” Your words of consolation remained unanswered in the empty room. Who knows, maybe I can use it to my advantage.

You turned away from the mirror, your life in Hell finally beginning.

The beginning was challenging, fighting off those who would try to take your place. Fortunately they were always weaker Sinners, and soon enough the random attacks stopped. After all, the one thing the citizens of Pentagram City all loved was alcohol.

Time passed, and you were ready to enact the next stage of your plan. Taverns were fantastic places for people to gossip, and this was the start of your information broker operation. Everyone was more willing to talk when conversing with or around someone as innocent-looking as yourself, and you started small. A few known facts here, a detrimental rumor there, but eventually it evolved into a network of informants stretching through the city and beyond. Everything that was to be known you knew, and those who were willing to pay the price could also gain this information.

A part of your plan also involved forming alliances with the stronger Sinners, and the only one who met your expectations was Zestial. He was a Sinner from the century before and for all intents and purposes was a gentleman. At first your offer was met with skepticism, but after seeing how quickly you moved up the ranks, he agreed, expanding your influence even more.

Years turned into centuries, your power grew just as you had hoped. Some new souls would occasionally dare to challenge your position, but they would soon discover that looks can be deceiving as they were added to your ever-growing collection.

More powerful Overlords began cutting up the city, claiming certain territories as their own much like the lords of the living world, and you were no exception, claiming the domain around your tavern up to Zestial’s border on one side, and as far as you could go without overreaching on the other.

Not long after was the birth of Princess Charlotte Morningstar announced to the masses. Most of the Sinners did not care about this news, as the rulers of Hell had had little involvement over the last few hundred years. The arrival of an heir gained more traction within the royal circles of Hellborn such as the Ars Goecia and Sins, who still maintained communication with the elusive monarchs. To you the most curious part was that Lilith gave birth to a child at all. I know Hellborn births are different from living humans, and from what I can tell Sinners cannot have children at all- but is Lilith a Sinner? Or is she special because she was the first? Maybe it is because she did not die the same way we did?

“Did you hear? The King is going to speak to Heaven!”

“I know they finished building that massive tower in the center of the city, do you think that’s why?”

You sat in the corner of the tavern, doing what you always did best, listening. There were rumors that King Lucifer was going to speak with Heaven about the possibility of redeeming souls, which to many seemed like the most foolish endeavor ever.

“I heard that he has some kind of proof-”

“Don’t be ridiculous! If that was the case, don’t you think someone would have been redeemed by now?”

It is true… in all the years I have been here never once has a soul been sent to Heaven. You had met many like yourself who had been sentenced to this realm of eternal torment for crimes and reasons much less serious than others. The entire system of who goes where does seem rather broken, maybe things can be fixed with talking to Heaven? At least for new souls, I have hardly done much to deserve redemption…

Such hopeful ideals did not come to pass, and instead the citizens of Pentagram City were greeted with the announcement that Heaven would be sending down angels to ‘purge’ the damned souls in order to reduce the exponentially growing population. This revelation was met with fear and anger as the once-potential beacon of hope became an ominous timer counting down until the judgment day.

This is wrong… even in the living world exterminating an entire group of people was frowned upon, how could Heaven of all places believe that this is the best course of action!?

You could not let this sickening injustice slide, and decided to use this power you have worked so hard for to confront the so-called rulers of Hell.

*** Lucifer POV ***

“How could the meeting with Heaven go so terribly!? All I wanted was to get rid of some of the Sinners by redeeming them, not permanently destroying their souls!” Lucifer sat in his room alone, the guilt of his failure a crushing burden. “And I can do nothing, otherwise they will attack the Hellborn or even Lilith or Charlie-” The thought sickened him, and he would do whatever it takes to keep his family safe. The silent room provided no advice as he continued to ramble. “If only I was stronger… I should have had Lilith go, she is always better at speaking, maybe then-” His words died at the sound of raised voices.

No, it was just one, one he did not recognize. No one has visited the manor in hundreds of years.

Lucifer quickly descended the stairs, until he reached the partially opened door leading to the throne room.

“Your Majesty, how could you abandon your people to this fate without any support?” The unknown voice spoke in barely-concealed rage, but with the elegance and tone of a royal.

Are they talking about the extermination? The guilt returned, but he was unable to leave, instead peering through the crack in an attempt to see the Sinner foolish enough to argue with Lilith.

“They brought this upon themselves, giving into their temptations.” Lilith’s bitter and cold response was no different than how she addresses him.

Lucifer stiffened at the sudden outpour of demonic energy. Is she an Overlord? I thought they were all selfish bastards.

“At least give the people something! Armor, weapons, even supplies to build barricades and shelters! That is what a ruler should-”

Hellish magic matched her demonic energy. “You forget yourself, Sinner, I am the Queen of Hell, and you should think twice before challenging me.” There was something else left unspoken in her thinly-veiled threat, but what he did not know.

The demonic power immediately faded. “... Forgive me, Your Majesty.” The reserved frustration in her voice betrayed the many words she wanted to say, but was too smart to speak them aloud.

Are all the Sinners this upset? What am I thinking of course they would be… Are they going to actually try to fight Heaven-

His thoughts froze as the throne room door swung open, and he was face-to-face with the Sinner. The door closed with a thud, but neither of them moved. Lucifer barely recognized her as the woman who left the manor hundreds of years ago. It was hard to forget when they have had so few guests.

Have they known each other for this long? Is that why she was so confident?

The awkward silence stretched on as her face morphed from surprise, to confusion, and finally recognition. “Your Majesty.” She bowed deeply. “I apologize, I did not realize you would also be present today or else I would have waited-”

“What? No I do not… do those sorts of things. I was simply walking by and-”

The Sinner stepped forward, her face alight with hope. “Please, speak to Her Majesty about assisting the citizens. Anything at all would be helpful-”

“I can’t. I’m sorry.” His response was curt as he turned to focus on the nearby portrait. I'm completely useless...

There was a soft buzzing of wings as she processed the words. “Oh. I see. My apologies.” She stiffly walked past, and he glanced over to see a look of disappointment before he was once again alone in the silent hallway.

*** Normal POV ***

The failure of your meeting was disheartening, but now was not the time to wallow in self-pity. If they will not listen to me, then I simply need to become stronger…

Sinners and Overlords alike tried to prepare for the battle with this unknown enemy. Makeshift barricades were placed in the streets, and those who were willing to fight lined the roads with a mixture of determination and fear.

You had a feeling though that Heaven knew something you and the other Sinners did not, and because of that you advised your friends and allies to stay inside and protect themselves. Your mother would have been ashamed, what proper lady leaves her people to fight alone?

But I am not their leader, I am simply another Sinner just like the rest, and right now we do not know enough. If everyone dies, there will be no one left to fight in the next battle.

You watched through the windows of your tavern as the bells tolled and massive portals tore gaping golden wounds into the perpetually red sky. It was a terrifying sight, the uniform angels in blacks and silvers, each wearing a mask with a sinister grin. The Sinners below were unfazed, and rallying cries echoed through the streets. Maybe they can actually fight, if we are able to hold them back long enough will they retreat? There are many more Sinners after all. The angels descended with blades and spears drawn.

Time froze as the blade of silver cut down its first victim.

And their soul completely disappeared.

No resurrection, no recovering like any other injury.

Gone. A hollow husk lying lifelessly in the street.

Panic took over as Sinners desperately tried to flee the relentless attack. All you could do was watch in horror at the massacre as the roads ran black with blood. Was this really Heaven’s solution? To murder any soul incapable of protecting themselves?

The bells tolled again, signifying the end of the first extermination. Not long after civil wars and territorial disputes began to crop up due to the new power imbalances created by the deaths of influential Overlords. Popularity of the Morningstars reached an all time low, especially for Lucifer, who was blamed for the start and perpetuation of the exterminations.

It was a dark time for Hell, and with it birthed a new generation of Sinners.

Most older souls did not survive the rapid advancement of Hell, succumbing to the will of newer Overlords or the exterminators, with you and Zestial being the only two who maintained their power. The two of you continued a mutual alliance, which eventually saw the addition of Carmilla Carmine, who was able to utilize your networks within the Seven Rings to expand her arms enterprise. While regular weapons were of no real use to you, ones made of angelic steel were just as beneficial as the ability to manipulate souls.

Rosie, who began the district of Cannibal Town with her husband, now shared your once-unoccupied border. She was respectable enough, maintaining an aesthetic within her conclave that was exceptionally more polite than the rest of the city, and she, just like everyone else, always benefited from your services.

Not long after a new Sinner appeared who quickly defeated lesser Overlords until he himself held the title. Known by most as the Radio Demon, Alastor, like you, also possessed the ability to manipulate souls, but he was much less subtle in his displays of power. He kept an air of secrecy that was difficult to work around even with your extensive network, and while you did not necessarily like him as a person, he did become close friends with Rosie, and kept his distance from you, so you thought it would be best to simply keep an eye on him.

Then came another collection of Sinners who paired together to form the Vees, claiming an entire section of the city as the Entertainment District. Since their territory was almost opposite yours they did not pose too much of a threat, and you hoped it would stay that way.

‘Princess Charlotte Morningstar announces the grand opening of her ‘Happy Hotel’! A redemption facility to save forsaken souls and send them to Heaven!’ The interview was almost painful to watch as the bright-eyed princess failed miserably in presenting her ideas to the masses, and was met with mockery by both the news anchors and the spectators.

Her ideas sound a lot like the rumors of Lucifer’s plan for redemption-

Your musings were interrupted by a powerful pull of magic stemming from the mirror you always kept on your person. You were almost shocked, as this was the first time Lilith had ever contacted you through the device, let alone the fact that she had been completely absent for seven years, but you wasted no time in moving to the solidarity of your room before withdrawing the silver hand mirror. There was a flicker before an image of the queen replaced your own reflection.

“Your Majesty, how can I be of assistance?” You tried to maintain decorum even with the awkward positioning of holding the visage of your contractor.

“I will keep this brief, I am sure you are aware of my daughter’s new… project?” Her tone was far from pleased, but you knew better than to pry.

“Of course, as does all of Hell.”

Lilith clicked her tongue. “Well I would like you to go over there, and keep an eye on her.”

You slowly blink in response. “Pardon?”

“Join the hotel, monitor her progress, and if necessary keep her out of harm. And under no circumstances let her know that I sent you.” It was a command not a request, the first real one you had ever received from your contractor.

Why is she so intent on spying on her daughter now? I assume no one has been watching her during Lilith’s absence… is it because she is trying to redeem souls?

Regardless of your opinions, you were in no position to deny the request. “As you wish, your Majesty.”

“Good, I will call again if I need anything else.” With that the demonic power drained from the device.

Well I guess I am moving…

So this is it…

You looked up at the tall ramshackle building, now labeled the Hazbin Hotel, that was to be your home for the foreseeable future. A place of unknown potential, where you would experience adventure, loss, hope, and love.

Today, the real story begins.

Notes:

Hello everyone!

I hope you enjoyed this introductory chapter.
The first bit of the story will follow the main plot of season 1, and then most likely branch off.

I will see you next time as we begin this exciting adventure!
