Tangle took a deep breath as she made her way to Whisper’s room. “This is it, girl. You can’t keep this locked up forever. Either she finds out on her own and you make things weird or you tell her and hope nothing gets screwed up.” It had been a few weeks since the events of her and Whisper’s grand adventure and Tangle had come to find out that her feelings for Whisper went beyond that of mere friendship. Letter in hand, Tangle slowly makes her way to the door to Whisper’s room. Was it just her or was that door ten times bigger than the thousands of times she’d walked up to it? “Just gotta knock. Knocking is easy, one of the first things you learn. Quit stalling Tangle!” Her fist was shaking as she slowly raised it up to the door and froze. “Maybe…maybe it’d be better if I told this to her face. Yeah, that sounds better.” She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a keyring, one of them being a key for Whisper’s room for emergencies only. This counted as an emergency right?
On the other side, the wisps were playing a board game and tried to stay silent as Whisper slept in her bedroom. Blue was accusing Pink of cheating and Cyan just looked tired while Orange giggled at the scene. Green was hardly paying attention until they turned to see the doorknob wiggle. They promptly informed the others and they all turned the lights off and hid to see who it was. When Tangle walked into the doorway, Pink was about to launch at her before being stopped by blue, who pointed at Tangle’s distressed face. “Alright…just gotta be straightforward.” She unfolded the piece of paper in her hands and stared at the attempts of an opener. “Hey, Whisper I…I think you’re really cool and just…I think we…could be more?” Her face contorted into an expression of pain. “No…that’s stupid…”
The wisps’ faces turned shocked as they saw the scene unfold in front of them. Pink was practically vibrating as they tried to hold back from launching to hug Tangle. Blue and Cyan looked at each other. Green and Orange kept their focus on Tangle as her face fell. “What am I doing? Boundaries Tangle. It took you a full-on adventure for her to be your friend. She might not even want to get that close to anyone. Not after what she’s been through...” With that, she crumpled the paper, threw it in a nearby trash can and walked off while looking distraught.
Blue flew over to the door and peeked around the corner to make sure she was gone and shut the door. They turned around to see Pink holding the crumpled letter and reading through it, glee clear on their face. They flew over to Blue and showed them the letter. Some of it was scribbled to the point of it being unreadable, but a few lines were still understandable.
Hey, Whisper. I think I love
Yo, Whisp. Need a girlfr Want to go out, like on a date?
So, there’s this new rest I want us to be more than just friends.
-Tangle
When Blue looked up from the paper, Pink was doing flips through the air. They stopped Pink and brought them down with the other wisps. Blue led the rest of them to the table and sat back down in their chair, placing the letter down in the middle of the table. They all glanced at each other, considering what would be the best choice for the both of them. Cyan picked up the letter and motioned to Whisper’s room, signaling that it concerned her just as much as it did them. Orange and Blue still looked unsure. Orange nodded while Blue was still thinking it over with their appendages crossed. They all wanted to protect Whisper in more ways than one, but knew that keeping this a secret wouldn’t help. With a sigh, Blue finally nodded.
They all made their way to the bedroom door with Blue holding the letter and they knocked softly. After a few seconds, Whisper opened the door while rubbing her eyes. “What is it?” Hesitantly, Blue held out the piece of paper for her to take. “Hm?” She reached her hand out and took it. As she read each word, her eyes slowly opened. “This is…wha-?” She was speechless as she finished reading. “Uh…” She coughed into her hand. “Thank you.” She reached out to pet Blue and walked back into her room. The wisps looked at each other worriedly and jumped when the door opened back up to Whisper in her usual wear. “Come on. We’re going to talk to her.” She held up her wispon and they all flew into it. As soon as everyone was accounted for, she rushed out the door.
…
Sitting on the roof of her home on Spiral Hill, Tangle was hugging her knees close to herself as she thought through her failed confession. “It’s for the best anyway.” She sighed out. So why didn’t it feel like it? She cared about Whisper and would never hurt her no matter what. Tangle had already pushed her boundaries enough, but a relationship seemed like tearing those boundaries down until not even dust was left. She wiped away at her cheeks. When had she started crying? It didn’t matter, she was stupid anyway.
The sound of something flying through the air caught Tangle’s attention. She turned in the direction of the sound to see the silhouette of a familiar wispon and wolf. Before it could get any closer, Tangle wiped her face free from tear stains and tried to sit casually with an indifferent expression. She didn’t look at Whisper as she landed and acted like she first noticed when she turned her head. “Oh, hey Whisper. What are you doing here? Thought you’d be asleep.” Whisper sat down right next to Tangle and she had to do her best not to freak out. “So should you. Wisps showed me this.” Whisper showed Tangle the letter and she wanted to die right there.
“I’m sorry Whisper.” Tangle turned away as she started to cry again. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’d understand if you don’t want to be friends any-” She was cut short by Whisper pulling her in for a quick kiss, much to the shock of the surrounding wisps. Whisper pulled away. “I…I didn’t want to get close with anyone. Especially this close. It would hurt to lose you. A lot. I want to be with you. I’m just hurting the both of us.” Tangle stared at her in shock and smiled. “I get it, Whisper. I just didn’t want to push you into something you didn’t think you’d be ready for. It isn’t entirely your fault. Don’t feel like you have to just for my sake. If you need time, I understand.”
Whisper smiled as she leaned down and placed her head on Tangle’s shoulder. “I think I’m ready.” Tangle looked down at her. “Are you-” Whisper put a finger to her lips. “Yes. I’m sure.” Tangle smiled as Whisper removed her finger and leaned her head down, staring up at the stars. Soon enough, Tangle fell asleep and Whisper wrapped her cloak around Tangle, the wisps snuggling up to them and falling asleep soon after.
