Bones walked back to his quarters after he finally got to leave the medbay. There had been one minor emergency after another and he hadn't been able to leave at his scheduled time. Or even an hour late. No, it was two hours after when he was supposed to leave that he finally got to head back. Where he was sure he would be met with an empty room.
Jim was not patient when waiting for Bones. Not after he had been on the bridge for half the night and all day thanks to his own series of emergencies to deal with. He would have given up waiting for his partner to come back and went to his own room once he realized there would be no chance for them to spend the evening together.
Being the captain and chief medical officer did not leave them much time to be a couple. Especially not when they were expected to be in their own quarters. Until they broke down and got married Starfleet would not allow them to share. Only because of their positions.
He made it back and entered the entry half of his quarters. And headed straight into the bathroom to get ready for bed. When he was done he finally went to his bedroom.
Where Jim was, passed out on his bed. He was on his stomach with his head pointed toward the door, clothes still on. Bones smiled at the sight. It was likely that he had lay down to wait and fell asleep.
He decided to say screw it to regulations for the night. Jim needed the uninterrupted sleep. So Bones carefully pulled the covers out and got into the bed next to his partner. And truly hoped no emergencies would pop up before the morning.
