Will and Nico were at McDonald’s with the seven-plus Reyna and Thalia, who happened to be close when they planned the reunion. They were all in their twenties now (except for the hunters, but they didn’t age), which was still unbelievable. They had been through so much as they grew up that at some point or the other, they just assumed they wouldn’t get past 18, probably younger if they were honest.
But here they were, everyone alive and joking, when they arrived Percy had even dared to ask Nico if he’d get a happy meal, the jackass, but it was funny and everything felt safer and calmer than it had the last time all of them had managed to get together.
The general jokes slowly turned into annoying Annabeth and Percy into telling them more about their wedding. They were the oldest couple in the group, and it was safe to assume that their matrimony was one of the most expected ones, not only in this close circle but by every demigod of their generation. The saviors of Olympus were getting officially married after so many years.
Eventually, the couple managed to include Will and Nico in the conversation, which propped up their current moment.
“I mean, if Will doesn’t cry at our wedding I’ll punch him, if only to make sure he does,” Nico said, eating some French fries and not giving it to much thought, to be honest, he had been thinking about popping the question to Will one of these days, he had even driven Hades mad by rambling about which ring would be better fit for him.
Will choked on his coke, sure, the talk had obviously led to something like that, he just wasn’t expecting Nico to say it so… Casually, as if it was a given, as if they were only waiting to set a date instead of waiting till one of them asked.
“Oh, c’mon, don’t be such a baby” Nico arched an eyebrow, looking at his boyfriend weirdly, surely, he knew he wouldn’t actually punch him, right? At least not hard enough to make him cry, the most he could see him do was shove him gently.
“Wedding?” Will asked, barely recovering from the coughing fit consequence of the choking, Nico blinked, only then realizing all his friends were silent and some were staring at them wide-eyed.
“I, uh, if you want? I mean, I kinda thought, uh, this is not the proposal, it was just-“ Nico blushed, hard, stuttering as he tried to explain, he was close to switching to Italian, his hands already moving a little frenetically as the nervousness took hold of him. Then he felt his boyfriend’s lips on his and he relaxed, gods, he was a mess, wasn’t he?
“Of course I want” Will whispered once the kiss broke, then he smirked “Although I hope what you said was true and this isn’t the actual proposal, I expect something cuter, mister di Angelo”
It was Nico’s turn to choke, their friends finally coming out of the shock and laughing at the show, he even heard Percy fucking whistle, now there was a dude he would actually punch, maybe today, while they were walking out.
It was around a month later, the incident almost forgotten, that Nico finally asked Will and gave him the ring, it had been difficult to book the restaurant, but he managed, he had even asked Hazel about romantic ideas and how to make the moment special for Will.
By the end of the dinner, Nico managed to get hold of his ideas and feelings to finally start with the proposal.
“Will,” he took a deep breath, trying hard to keep as much eye contact as possible, without looking creepy. “I, look, we’ve been through a lot together, we’ve grown together, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have found someone as amazing as you to do so, I honestly don’t know how I managed to survive this long, but I do know you’re the best thing that happened” He slowly took out the box, opening it for his boyfriend to see, his already racing heart beating harder as he heard a sharp intake of air. “And, I was thinking, for a long time, that I want to marry you, then I tried to think about what kind of ring I wanted to get you and I figured since the skull ring was something like a promise ring, maybe it was fitting for this that it was a sunny one because you’re like that, you brought light and warmth into my life, you are a sun, not only because of you father but, uh, how you act and take care of your loved ones”
Nico interrupted himself, trying to prevent saying something dumb, and instead offered the ring to Will, a golden ring with diamonds, at each side, as if guarding it, what looked like stars. Will took it with shaking hands, being left without words for some seconds.
“I, Bob called you a star… Is that why they’re guarding the sun?” Will spoke softly, his eyes moving from the ring to Nico’s red face.
“Yeah, I mean, I wanted something that showed that I’ll be here for you, always,” he said, playing with his hands, wanting to look away but also to memorize everything about Will’s reaction.
“I’d love to marry you, Nico” Will finally answered the proposal, smiling brightly at his boyfriend, feeling nothing but love and warmth through his body as Nico’s face brightened and he jumped into his arms, hugging him tight. Yeah, the promise rings hadn0t been typical, and they had been young when they exchanged them, both fifteen, and only one was a ring, the other one had been a coin, but the thought had been there, they had intended to nurture the relationship since back then, and now they were sealing a compromise, they were deciding on spending the rest of their lives together. And they couldn’t be happier.
