Chapter 1: The perfekt evening

Chapter Text

Natasha woke up early on this Sunday morning. The Sky was clear, and the sun sent its first rays through the windows of the small flat she and Loki shared. She prepared for the perfect evening with a revitalized feeling in her stomach. The sound of birdsong reached her ears, and for a moment, she felt light-hearted and full of hope. Her first stop was the local market, where she wanted fresh ingredients. With a shopping list in hand, she scoured the stalls, choosing the best tomatoes, fragrant basil, and a fine selection of cheeses. It was almost like a ritual for her to make this selection - she imagined Loki gazing in awe at the food as she lovingly prepared it. She had to smile when she spotted a couple milling around a vegetable stall. ‘That could happen to Loki and me one day,’ she thought and couldn't help but enjoy the idea.

Back in the flat, she began the preparations. Natasha decorated the table with fresh flowers she had bought at the market. Their vibrant colors brought the room to life, and the sweet scent filled the air. She lit candles that cast a warm, inviting glow and made sure everything looked perfect. The soft play of light from the candles created an atmosphere that she thought would make for the perfect dinner, but thoughts of her shortcomings came flooding back, and with every moment she was alone, a feeling of nervousness crept into her heart.

To lighten the mood, she put together a playlist of songs that had a special meaning to them both - tunes that brought back memories of adventures together and made them smile. As she chose the music, she remembered how often she and Loki had laughed together in the past. Every song she heard seemed to bring back memories of all those happy moments, and she hoped this evening would be just as memorable. But despite the careful planning, Natasha felt a twinge of nervousness. Was this enough? Would Loki appreciate the effort? Her thoughts revolved around the fears that her past - the dark shadows she carried with her - would strain their relationship. But she pushed these thoughts aside. Everything would be perfect today.

As the evening approached, Natasha took one last look in the mirror and realized that she had dressed up for the occasion. Her black dress flattered her figure, which felt even more beautiful under the light of the candles, and she felt ready to whisk Loki away into a world of light and love. The clock struck seven as Loki opened the door.

‘Wow, Natasha, it looks incredible!’ he stepped in, his eyes widening in surprise. Natasha smiled, her nervousness beginning to fade.

‘Thank you, Loki. I wanted it to be something special.’

‘It's already perfect,’ he replied charmingly, taking her in his arms. Natasha felt her heart skip a beat. It felt good to be in his arms. The thought that she might not have to be perfect to be happy together gave her a warm feeling.

But as fate would have it, the evening quickly took an unexpected turn. While preparing the food in the kitchen, Natasha realized that the pasta she had cooked with so much love was starting to boil. Excitedly, she had left the water on the hob for too long. It was too late when she hastily removed the pot from the heat - the pasta was overcooked and tough. Loki came in and saw the mess in the kitchen. ‘Shall I help you?’

No, I've got it under control,’ Natasha replied hastily as she tried to save the damaged pasta. It was just the beginning of the mishaps. The next time she went to turn on the music, she realized that she had accidentally selected a playlist of the loudest and most inappropriate party hits. Suddenly, ‘Eye of the Tiger’ blared through the flat, drowning out everything. Natasha was trying to find the volume control when she experienced the next catastrophe: a boiling over of sauce on the hob set off the fire alarm.

‘Oh no!’ cried Natasha as the shrill alarm resounded through the flat. Loki rushed to the kitchen, his eyes wide. ‘What's happened?’

‘I... I think dinner's on fire!’ she stammered as she tried to switch off the alarm. The chaos that was unfolding in the flat seemed unstoppable. Natasha felt as if the façade she had put up was collapsing. She felt the shame wash over her and thought of everything she had wished for and her expectations of herself. ‘I'm sorry, Loki. I wanted it to be perfect.’

But Loki, instead of complaining or looking disappointed, began to laugh. ‘Perfect? I think that's the opposite of perfect!’ It was then that Natasha realized that her expectations for the evening were not what really made the connection between them. As the siren continued to wail, Loki held her by the shoulder. ‘Let's make the best of it,’ he suggested.

‘What do you think?’ she asked, still overwhelmed by the situation.

‘Let's just order pizza,’ he suggested, grinning broadly. ‘And then we can dance in the kitchen and laugh about all the crazy things that just happened.’

Something in Natasha's heart was hopeful. Maybe it wasn't perfection she was looking for, but the sharing of imperfections. ‘That sounds good,’ she agreed, feeling relieved. They chose their favorite pizza toppings, and while they waited for the delivery, they started dancing in the small kitchen. Natasha let the tension slip away, and when she looked at Loki, she realized he was smiling at her, too. The room was filled with laughter as they joked about the evening's misadventures.

When the pizza finally arrived, they gathered around the table and sat amidst the remnants of the failed dinner and the messy kitchen. Natasha realized that she wasn't dwelling on what had gone wrong but on what they had just experienced together. As they looked at the pizza, she noticed Loki lift his slice and begin to gush over it with an exaggerated, theatrical expression. ‘This is the best meal I've ever had,’ he announced with a broad grin. Natasha couldn't help but laugh out loud.

‘You're impossible,’ she said, shaking her head as she grabbed a piece and took a bite. The cheese was delicious, and fresh herbs filled the air.

As they ate, they began to tell each other their stories. Natasha talked about her childhood, the struggles she had gone through, and the demons she had to overcome to get here. ‘It was never easy,’ she confessed, ’but I've learnt that the imperfections in life are what make it interesting. It has moulded me.’

Loki listened intently, and when she finished, he felt inspired to share his fears as well. ‘I always feel like I'm not good enough. That I'm not in control of my life,’ he admitted, his voice softer. Natasha put a reassuring hand on his arm. ‘You're more than enough, Loki. You're incredible.’

The emotional depth of their conversation created a space of connection in which they could both open up without fear of judgment. The evening developed into a unique experience that they would both never forget.

As the candles began to flicker and the evening drew to a close, they sat on the sofa, the empty pizza boxes on the table. Natasha looked at Loki and felt a wave of affection wash over her. ‘You know,’ she began, ’I couldn't have imagined that this evening would be so special.’

‘Me neither,’ said Loki, taking her hand. ‘And I wouldn't change a thing. I couldn't have wished for a better evening.’

That night, Natasha and Loki learned that true love doesn't depend on perfection but on the little moments when they can laugh together and overcome challenges. Their imperfections actually made their relationship more beautiful and authentic.
