(requested by Sunny the guest!)

Notes:

Thank you to the guest sunny☀️ for the request! It’s also my thank you gift for all the support on Baby Break! I based this fix off of when I went for my first ultrasound back during my first pregnancy (which ended in a miscarriage, but don’t worry I’m fine!) anyways, enjoy!

Work Text:

Isaac and Nigel were still sleeping on an early November morning. Today wasn’t any early November morning (or day), oh no. It was the day Isaac got his first ultrasound and they got to see their baby for the first time. Nigel woke up and looked at Isaac. Oh he looked so peaceful and the little bump starting to form made him look even MORE perfect. Isaac was only 12 weeks into his pregnancy and they scheduled his first ultrasound yesterday. Nigel gently rubbed Isaac’s stomach, then kissed Isaac’s cheek. Isaac stirred from this response, his body moving and his eyes slowly fluttering him to life.

“Isaac, today’s the day!” Nigel told Isaac excited about seeing their twins for the first time, “We get to see our babies for the first time!”

“Babies?” Isaac asked groggily and confused, “Who said I was having twins?”

“The weight gain, the worse symptoms…” Nigel began then trailed off into silence.

“HOW DARE YOU I’M NOT THAT FAT!” Isaac would shout at Nigel, taking offense to what he said, then burst into tears.

“No no no! Love I didn’t mean it like that!” Nigel hugged Isaac, kissing his cheek gently, “I mean it like you’re carrying two of our miracles!”

Isaac would sniff, “I’m still not that fat…” He would say crankily.

Nigel knew it was just the hormones and Isaac being woken up early (and possibly Isaac was a bit hangry too), but sometimes Isaac’s emotional episodes were a bit much for him.

“Look,” Nigel began, “I’m sorry. I’ll make you your favorite breakfast to make up for it.”

Isaac sniffed and looked at Nigel with big, puppy dog, eyes, “Cinnamon rolls please, sweetie?”

Nigel would kiss Isaac on the cheek.

“On it, love.” Nigel told Isaac, running to the kitchen to cook Isaac breakfast.

——————-

Isaac ate his breakfast Nigel cooked for him. The couple got in their car and started driving to the ultrasound clinic. Isaac and Nigel were excited to see their babies. Isaac was still a bit cranky too from being woken up so early, but he could live. They kept driving down the cool New York City streets until they reached a building with a sign on top of it that read “Little Ones’ Surprise Ultrasound Clinic”. Isaac and Nigel got out of their car and walked into the building, getting greeted by the receptionist.

“Appointment for Higgintoot?” Isaac asked the receptionist at the front desk, who was finding their appointment in the system.

“Okay!” The woman told the couple, “Your appointment is in 5 minutes and they’ll be with you shortly!”

“Thank you.” Isaac told the woman, finding a place to sit down in the waiting room, with Nigel following suit.

The technicians called Isaac and Nigel to the back to see their baby. It was finally time.

—--------------

The technician introduced herself as Jennisis and Jennisis introduced Anoia, her trainee who would be watching her, and escorted Isaac and Nigel to a room that was dimly lit with the only things in it were some chairs against the wall, a TV projecting the images of the ultrasound machine, the ultrasound machine and the bed where Isaac would lay down on.

“Alright,” Jennisis began, moving her bangs to the side by shaking her head, then gesturing towards Isaac, “Would you please lie on the bed and lift up your shirt for me please?”

Isaac got on the bed and laid down on it. He was a bit self-conscious about lifting up his shirt, especially with the weight he gained during pregnancy. Nigel put a reassuring hand on his shoulder and smiled at him. Isaac gained a bit more confidence and lifted up his shirt for Jennisis.

“Alright, I’m just going to put some gel on your stomach, and it might be a bit cold at first.” Anoia told Isaac shyly, putting the gel on his stomach.

Isaac let out a high-pitched yelp as a response but then settled down. The TV loaded the screen of the ultrasound and Jennisis put the transducer of the ultrasound on Isaac’s womb on the TV to to display this:

There they were. Their little precious miracle. Isaac was a bit relieved that he wasn’t having twins, but it would be fun. Isaac looked at the screen while Jennisis moved the transducer on Isaac’s stomach. Isaac and Nigel looked in awe at the little thing on the screen. Nigel couldn’t believe it. Their baby-their miracle-was that tiny thing on the screen. Isaac was amazed that little thing was growing in him. He didn’t know if it was the hormones (it probably was) that was making him feel like this, but he felt like crying. He felt the tears of joy springing to his eyes. Jennisis passed the transducer to Anoia and instructed her on how to move it on Isaac’s stomach.

“Would you like to hear the heartbeat?” Jennisis would ask the couple.

“Oh yes please!” Isaac would tell her.

Jennisis would instruct Anoia on how to hear and show the heartbeat of a baby on an ultrasound. Anoia would pull up the baby’s heartbeat. The sound of the heartbeat would echo in the room. Nigel would listen in awe and then look at Isaac, who was already crying tears of joy.

“Isaac, are you alright?” Nigel would ask Isaac concerned.

“Yeah,” Isaac would sniff, tears of joy rolling down his face, “It’s just…gah…too…precious.”

“Would you like a turn, dad?” Jennisis would gesture at Nigel, holding the transducer.

Nigel took the transducer from Jennisis and moved it around Isaac’s stomach. It was moments like this Isaac and Nigel would like to freeze forever.
