He was sick of all of this shit. Rafe hated everything about his family since his mother died. It had felt like Rafe’s heart had been ripped out when his mom left.
His father had something in common with Rafe; the hate towards his family. Even though he had his favourite child, and loved his second wife, he started hating his family too. Ward had become a different person after his first wife—Elizabeth—had left. Ward was always angry with Rafe, it became normal for Rafe.
So honestly, it wasn’t a surprise that Ward would get mad, when he found Rafe’s coke. It wasn’t a surprise that Rafe was now sporting a semi-permanent bruise. Considering that the bruise was already getting red once he was just hit, it really shouldn’t have been a surprise that it would stay. But when the fight had happened… let’s just say that Ward’s ‘proof that he’s a coke addict’ wasn’t the only baggie Rafe had lying around.
Anyway,
Rafe had been pretty fucking high during that argument. He didn’t really feel shit from the bruise, until the coke wore off.
Lucky for Rafe, there’s a kegger at the boneyard tonight.
-
Rafe walked over to his friends, or well, friend. He only actually likes topper. The other Kook’s are just not really his type off people. That’s a story for another time, though.
The Boneyard was as loud as usual. The pounding music, that could be heard yard’s away, blaring through his ears. It always blasted out Rafe’s thoughts. Or that was just the five solo cups of beer he’d had. It could also be the line of coke he did. But that’s not the point.(shut up dad) he isn’t an addict! He isn’t , he swears! If he was an addict he would’ve ended up like Luke Maybank; the definition of trash.
Rafe had heard rumours before about how he’s a deadbeat, and how he supposedly beat his wife to death. That’s not true, though, he knows, because he’d been there when she died. She’d drowned. Rafe’s mother had been friends with her, they went to the beach with her, and her son, JJ. God, Rafe hates that kid. But, anyway, Lori Maybank had drowned, possible suicide they’d said. But honestly, if that was the case, she’d been selfish because she still had a four year old, who had probably waited months for his mom to come back home.
Rafe is pretty sure JJ doesn’t remember that she drowned, almost in front of him.
Rafe does.
He still doesn’t like JJ, though.
When Rafe found Topper, they both went to get another drink.
“I mean, if I’m the next one of the boys Sarah’s gonna cheat on, you’d defend me right?” No.
“Yeah, sure.” Honestly, Rafe didn’t care about Sarah’s little games with boys, but she’s still his little sister. Rafe would kill for her.
And besides, Topper needs to move on already. In Rafe’s opinion, Topper was way more fun before he’d gotten together with Sarah. Now he’s just complaining about how, oh so miserable, he is. When in reality, he should be glad for Sarah. Rafe doesn’t think she’s ever had a boyfriend this long.
“That’s good man, I don’t know what I’d do without you by my side.” Sure Topper is his friend and all, but “You’d be dead, man.” Rafe said in a cold, yet comfortable tone.
“Yo, are those the Pogue’s dude?” Topper said. He pointed to where the keg was planted. JJ and his little friend group surrounding it, And Sarah.
This is going to be fun. Actually it isn’t. Because nobody is hitting his sister, so Topper, be careful. If Rafe only saw Topper getting mad at Sarah, he was gonna lose it.
“Yeah, but don’t make a scene, dude. Not worth it.” But Topper was already making his was towards them. Great, just perfect.
“Hey, John B! Can I have that drink?” Topper yelled. It made John B turn around and face Topper. The other Pogue’s and Sarah were looking at them too.
“Can’t you get your own drink, Top?” John B said. Stupid kid. Shit is gonna go down tonight. Or Rafe was just being weird again.
“Well can’t you get your own girlfriend? Not steal mine, maybe?” Topper snapped back.
“Are you accusing me of cheating, Topper?” Sarah’s voice sounded angry. Not aggressive angry though.
“I’m not even doing anything!” John B exclaims in frustration. But that seemed to do it, because Topper threw the first punch.
JJ jumped in, to cover John B. Punching Topper three times, in the face. Topper is Rafe’s friend, he needs to defend him.
Rafe started hitting JJ, which resulted into JJ hitting back. And then suddenly, there was an entire crowd of people cheering the fights on.
It didn’t last long, though, because the cops showed up. Rafe and JJ didn’t notice that part.
They were still yelling and punching each other, when they were being pulled by two cops.
They were both pressed with their body against the cop cars. Rafe could hear the faint noises of JJ’s friends making stupid excuses for him, so he could walk off. It didn’t work, because JJ’s hands had cuffs on them before they’d managed to put them on Rafe. JJ had stopped protesting against it too. Accepting his faith or some shit.
But what Rafe hadn’t noticed before this very moment, about JJ. JJ had this kind of vacant look in his eyes. Like he snapped out of it, completely. Not just anger, but something else, Rafe couldn’t read what it was. And by the time JJ was in the car, Rafe was getting pushed in the other car.
The ride to the police station was short, he was already being hauled to a holding cell by Shoupe.
“No, Shoupe, don’t tell me you’re gonna put him in the same cell as me now?!” Fucking JJ.
Fuck Shoupe.
Didn’t they just bash each other’s head in?
Or was that just a dream?
Or did Shoupe just hate them so much?
That one it is.
“Shoupe he literally was beating me not even an hour ago.” Rafe said. And it was true. So maybe Shoupe has some weird kink about pain or something.
“Yeah, but both of you have done that before, and both of you have been here before, so maybe this will be some motivation to stay out of trouble.” That’s it, Rafe will kill himself. He’ll have to listen to JJ’s stupid annoying voice until dad bails him out. If he bails him out.
And the cell door was closed.
“Shoupe this is just torture!” JJ exclaims.
Shoupe didn’t even look back, bitch.
Rafe sat on the little bench in the cell. They were probably full of germs, but it’s definitely cleaner than JJ’s annoying glare if he was the one to sit on the bench. JJ WOULD take advantage of that.
Instead JJ sank from standing against the wall, to the floor.
It took a total of 40 minutes for JJ to break the silence. Surprising. He’d always thought JJ could never shut up.
“Would you rather die in this cell or die alone?” Rafe will kill him before JJ gets to ask another question, because what.
“What?” Annoying fucking pogue.
“You heard me.”
“You’re fucking crazy, JJ.” That’s nothing new.
“Can you just answer the question?” JJ asks. His voice isn’t the usual playful, annoying, or bitching voice. JJ genuinely wanted to know.
“Die here.” The kid is 16 and he is almost 19. He isn’t cruel. Of course he’ll answer.
“Why? I mean no offence Rafe but isn’t this place like, the grossest of the gross for Kook’s?” It’s true.
“ I just don’t want to die alone, it would be such a sad way to go.” Rafe starts Getting less annoyed of the teen. He isn’t as horrible as he thought. Still annoying, but not horrible.
“I don’t want to die alone either. There’s this theory that Kie made up, that when you die alone, you’ll become a ghost, in your own memories. Which sounds weird… I don’t know how to explain it. I know my mom died alone, though. She drowned, so no way she was with somebody. I feel bad for her…” he goes to ramble about more stuff.
It’s kinda sweet.
He’s not gonna lie.
“Rafe, did you ever watch the Barbie movies?” What.
“What?” He muttered.
“Did you watch the Barbie movies? Sarah made me watch them once, so I thought you maybe had too.” JJ says still interested in whatsoever.
“First, when did you start hanging out with Sarah, and second, yes she made me watch those movies.” Because when did that happen. Was Sarah a Pogue now?
“We’ve been friends for months, but she’s been quiet about it, with Topper and all.” Maybe Rafe hit JJ’s head a little too hard, because he’s telling Rafe stuff about his life.
“Oh…” he says
“Yeah, oh,” JJ breaths out
That’s when Shoupe came back. Thank you God. “ Rafe your dad is waiting outside, you’re free to go.” Great.
He didn’t even say bye to JJ.
Maybe JJ wasn’t as horrible as he thought.
