Claiming What's Hers

Summary:

She didn't notice because she was busy with work but not her lover.

Work Text:

The precinct was bustling with its usual rhythm of shuffling papers, ringing phones, and the occasional outburst from the bullpen. Detective Jane Rizzoli leaned against her desk, scribbling something into a notepad with her usual intensity. Her dark hair was pulled into a loose ponytail, and her leather jacket hung lazily on the back of her chair. She was entirely engrossed in her work.

Across the room, Maura Isles, the ever-composed Chief Medical Examiner, glanced at her best friend—and lover—with a soft smile. Jane was a force of nature, a study in contrasts: rugged and refined, fierce but deeply loyal. Maura's admiration was interrupted by the arrival of a new face.

A tall, blonde woman strode confidently toward Jane’s desk, her bright smile cutting through the dull hum of the precinct. Her name tag read "Officer Lisa Caldwell." She was new, vibrant, and clearly confident in her appearance.

"Detective Rizzoli?" Lisa asked, her voice lilting with interest as she tilted her head.

Jane barely looked up, nodding. "Yeah, that’s me. What’s up?"

Lisa leaned on the desk, intentionally closing the space between them. "I’ve been hearing a lot about you. Everyone says you’re the best detective in the department. Thought I’d come introduce myself."

Jane gave her a polite smile, still not looking up from her notes. "Nice to meet you. Welcome aboard."

Maura, observing from her position near the coffee machine, narrowed her eyes. She could see it—every flick of Lisa's hair, the coy tilt of her head, the way she leaned just a little too far into Jane's personal space.

"Do you always work this hard?" Lisa continued, her voice dripping with an almost saccharine sweetness.

Jane chuckled absentmindedly. "Comes with the job. Gotta keep Boston safe, you know?"

Lisa’s smile widened. "Well, it’s impressive. You must have incredible focus and stamina."

At that, Maura nearly choked on her coffee. She set her cup down and started to make her way across the room.

Jane, still oblivious, shrugged. "Yeah, sure. Stamina’s important in this line of work."

Lisa laughed, the sound light and airy, as if Jane had told the funniest joke in the world. "Oh, I bet you’re good at... a lot of things, I would like to see."

Maura stopped mid-stride, her fingers curling into fists. She could feel her temper rising—a rare occurrence for the usually composed doctor. Jane, however, remained utterly oblivious to Lisa’s not-so-subtle flirtations.

"Thanks," Jane said absentmindedly, still jotting something in her notepad.

Lisa edged even closer, her hand lightly brushing against Jane’s forearm. "You know, if you ever need help with... anything, I’d be more than happy to assist. I’m great under pressure."

Maura’s jaw tightened. That was it. Enough was enough.

She crossed the remaining distance to Jane’s desk and stood directly between Jane and Lisa, her posture perfectly poised but her tone icy. "Excuse me, Officer Caldwell, but Detective Rizzoli is incredibly busy at the moment."

Lisa blinked, clearly startled by Maura's sudden appearance. "Oh, I didn’t mean to interrupt. We were just talking."

Maura’s smile was tight, her eyes sharp as glass. "Yes, I could see that. However, Detective Rizzoli’s focus is paramount to her work. I’d appreciate it if you refrained from distracting her."

Jane, finally looking up from her notepad, blinked at Maura in confusion. "What’s going on?"

Maura turned to Jane, her expression softening instantly. "Nothing, Jane. Just ensuring you can continue your work uninterrupted."

Lisa, not one to back down easily, crossed her arms. "I didn’t mean any harm. We were just having a conversation."

Maura’s gaze hardened again. "It didn’t look like just a conversation to me."

Jane raised an eyebrow, her confusion deepening. "Wait, what are we talking about?"

Lisa opened her mouth to respond, but Maura cut her off, her tone sharp but controlled. "Detective Rizzoli, she belongs to me. Any attempts to insinuate otherwise are unwelcome and unnecessary. I suggest you find someone else to ‘have a conversation’ with."

Lisa’s eyes widened, and she took a step back, clearly taken aback by Maura's assertiveness. "I... didn’t realize."

"Clearly," Maura said, her voice like ice.

Lisa glanced at Jane, who still looked utterly bewildered, then back at Maura. Sensing she had no chance against the formidable Dr. Isles, Lisa muttered a quick apology and retreated.

As soon as she was out of earshot, Jane turned to Maura, her eyebrows furrowed. "What the hell was that about?"

Maura crossed her arms, a faint blush creeping up her neck. "She was flirting with you, Jane. Shamelessly, might I add."

Jane’s mouth fell open. "Flirting? With me? No way."

Maura sighed, exasperated but fond. "Yes, Jane. She was. And you were entirely oblivious."

Jane leaned back in her chair, rubbing the back of her neck. "Huh. I didn’t even notice."

Maura gave her a pointed look. "Clearly."

Jane chuckled, still trying to process what had just happened. "So, wait. You told her I belong to you?"

Maura’s cheeks flushed a deeper shade of pink. "I may have... implied it."

Jane smirked, leaning forward. "Implied it, huh? That’s bold for you, Maur and in front all the precinct."

Maura straightened her posture, her tone defensive. "Well, someone had to make it clear that you’re not available for... frivolous advances."

Jane’s smirk widened into a grin. "Frivolous advances? You’re really something, Maura."

Maura huffed, though there was a hint of a smile on her lips. "I was merely protecting you."

"Protecting me from what? A compliment?" Jane teased, her dark eyes sparkling with amusement.

Maura rolled her eyes. "From unnecessary distractions. You’re mine, Jane. Whether you realize it or not."

Jane froze for a moment, her grin softening into something more tender. "Yours, huh?"

Maura’s blush deepened, but she didn’t back down. "Yes. Mine."

Jane stood, taking a step closer to Maura, their eyes locking. "Well, if it makes you feel better, I don’t care about anyone else. I barely noticed her. You’re the only one I see, Maura."

Maura’s breath hitched, her eyes glistening with emotion. "Jane..."

Jane reached out, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind Maura’s ear. "And for the record, I think it’s kinda hot when you get all possessive."

Maura’s lips parted, but no words came out. Her heart was racing, her cheeks burning.

Jane chuckled, leaning in to press a quick kiss to Maura’s temple. "Come on, Maur. Let’s grab lunch. My treat."

Maura nodded silently, letting Jane lead the way. As they walked out of the bullpen, hand in hand, the new officers watched in stunned silence. None of them would ever dare to flirt with Detective Rizzoli again—not with Dr. Isles standing guard.
