Walking With Dragons One Shots

Summary:

In this one shot series, we delve into the life of Toothless and the other dragons after they move to the Hidden World. This will follow the cannon timeline, however some changes will be made to the Hidden World to fit my head cannon, because like many others I have quite a number of issues with how 'The Nine Realms' portrayed the Hidden World and events that took place after HTTYD 3.

Chapter 1: The Reign of the Night Fury King

Chapter Text

Toothless flew through the darkening skies, with a flock of dragons in the thousands following behind. It had been months, since he lead Berk's dragons to the Hidden World. Since then, he's spent hardly more than the total of a few days in the Hidden World. Instead, he's been out on countless voyages to parts of the world he's never been, rounding up countless dragons many of which were species he's never seen, and making many trips to lead them all in a great migration to the Hidden World.

As they few over the open sea, the now familiar caldera that served as the entrance to the Hidden World came into view. He paused over the gaping maw, mist filling the air as water rushed in waterfalls down into the pit.  As he hovered in place, he turned to look at the flock behind him. As expected, they all seemed to be hesitating. Most dragons did when he brought them here, for reasons ranging from fear of the unknown and fear of change, too not wanting to leave the surface world. Some of course we're glad to go, and and readily dived into the world below. For the rest of the dragon's, he offered an encouraging roar and a supportive look, to let them know that things were going to be okay. The Hidden World is thier true homeland, a safe place they could live in peace.

He dived into the world below, and the flock now encouraged, followed him and dove into the depths below. Past the misty waterfalls, lay a dark and damp cavern. Flying through this cavern and he reached oone of the many mushroom forests. Giant mushrooms growing along the many giant stalagmites that rose from below. Small waterfalls poured from above, and pooled in the giant mushroom caps. The ones that didn't hold water, instead held large community nests containing eggs from many different dragons. As he and the flock flew past, the mushrooms glowed brighter, the eggs reacted by glowing themselves, and glowing patterns lit up along his and the flock's bodies.

Once they cleared the mushroom forest, the glow faded from thier bodies. They entered a large cavern that went on for as long as the eye could see. The glow of lava could be seen from far below,  and crystals on the ceiling and walls of the cave glowed brightly to light up the space.  Rivers and non glowing mushrooms spread out across rock shelves, and millions of dragons of all shapes and sizes flew through the air and roosted on all available surfaces. The number of dragons he saw had grown a hundred times greater, compared to the number of dragons he first saw here when he first came to the Hidden World. That made sense however, as he'd been bringing in millions of dragons since then. He'd figured they would have spread out already, but they had chosen to remain in the King's Realm.

His throne eventually came into view. His throne was a gigantic amber colored glowing crystal, that was in the shape of a mountain or pillar with large spikes growing out from the base. All in all, it looked like a giant crown. And there, waiting on the center pillar was a familiar white figure. It was his love, his mate,  his queen. He let out a tremendous jovial roar at the sight of her, calling out to announce his return home. Even from this distance, he couldn't see her visibility perk up, and she called back with an eager roar to greet him.

He sped up his pace to get to her, and she waited impatiently on center the throne. Once he was close enough, the flock began dispersing. The hoards of dragons already present came together to welcome the new commers, flying in a dance with the newbies joining in. Toothless would normally join them, but this trip had been his longest one and the one that took him the furthest from home. So instead, he wasted no time and landed on the center on his throne. He immediately lunched towards his mate, embracing her with nuzzles, and cuddles. She returned his affections, tucking her head under his chin. They had both deeply missed eachother. He purred, and gave her face an affectionate lick, and she looked at him with those adoring blue eyes. As they leaned into eachother, they looked out over his kingdom. The dance was now over, and his many subjects were now roosted, squeezing tightly together as far of the eye could see in order to fit. So tightly packed they were that they couldn't properly now, and instead only bowed thier heads. He let out a mighty booming roar towards his subjects, and they responded with roars of cheer on return.

He had decided to stay for the night, feeling he deserved a good night's rest next to his mate after his month long trip. He was planning on heading back out on his next trip in the morning. He hadn't gotten as much sleep as he would have liked, when he was abruptly woken up by a loud commotion. he groggily sprung for his feet in suprise, feeling quite cranky due to the rude awakening. His love stirred next to him, slowing waking up her self. Looking down from his throne, he could see a fight breaking out between a large group of dragons. He wasted no time, and launched into flight towards the crowd. He landed in the center of the flight, squared his stance, and let out a and angry growling roar to interrupt the fight and reprimand the dragons. He turned his glare onto each of them, lowly growing at any dragon that tried to continue the fight. Eventually, every dragon fell silent, submissively looking away from him. He let out a tired huff, before he began interrogating the dragons on what was going on.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the only fight to break out that day. It seemed like as soon as he resolved one conflict, another fight would pop up somewhere else. With each argument he would break up, he'd get more and more frustrated. It got to the point where there was so many fights at once, that even his queen had to step in to help. He definitely wouldn't be able to head out for his next trip at this rate. The fights ranged from disputes over territory, space, food, and even some of the cannibalistic dragons trying to hunt other dragons. The tension was buildings, and a solution needed to be found before things boiled over. By the end of the day, he was left exhausted.

He slumped down tiredly on his throne, his mate sitting next to him and sending him sympathetic looks. All thses issues boiled down to a single route cause; the overpopulation in this area, a problem similar to the one they had back on Berk. All the dragons wanted to be close to him, especially the new commers who saught the comfort of their King's presence when they were surrounded by a new and unfamiliar world, the confusion of such a change, and feeling the loss of thier old world. It didn't seem fair to deny them that comfort, and force them to relocate. On the other hand, it wasn't fair to relocate the dragons that already lived in this part of the Hidden World in order to make room for the new commers. He groaned not knowing what to do. Problems were always so much easier to handle when Hiccup was with him. He always had a plan, and Toothless could really use one of his plan's right about now. Even though he wasn't here to support him, Toothless reminded himself that he wasn't alone. Like Astrid supported Hiccup, he had the support of his beautiful queen, and he has the support of his friends as well.

Having a sudden realization, he stood up and looked over to his mate. He had a plan, a plan to help solve this issues, and to help solve issues in the future. Inspired by his memories of the Chief's Council back on Berk, he would make his own King's Council. It wasn't something any of the past King of Dragons had done, but then again he wasn't anything like the past kings. He told his plan to his mate, and she gave him a supportive roar.

The next day, he gathered the dragons together to announce his new  King's Council, and the individuals he had chosen to receive the honor of joining it. Of course, he would sit at the head of his council, and his lovely queen would rule it beside him. One by one the members of the King's Council took thier places, one on each of the large crystal spikes that grew out from the base of the crystal tower in the center, where he and his mate roosted.

The first member was Stormfly, the Deadly Nadder. While Hiccup was his best friend among humans, Stormfly was his best friend among dragons. He trusted her with his life, and she was as loyal as they came. She was spirited, adventurous, supportive, mature, a great playmate, and very maternal.

The second member was Meatlug, the Gronckle. While not his best friend like Stormfly, she was a close second, being one of his closest friends. She was a sweetheart, always willing to lend an ear to listen, and always willing to lend a helping hand. While she could sometime be a bit oversensitive, it was the only cause of her deeply empathetic nature. She could be a bit clumsy, but was very dependable, and a good playmate.

The third member was Hookfang, the Monstrous Nightmare. His relationship was Hookfang had quite the rocky start, and remained strained, argumentative, and competitive in the early years of their friendship. But overtime, they had developed a respect for eachother and a friendship. Even though Hookfang could be hot headed, aggressive, stubborn, argumentative, rash, and stubborn, he knew he could always count on him to have his back.

The fourth members were Barf & Belch, the Hideous Zippleback. They could be... A pain to deal with. He couldn't count the number of times they left him feeling annoyed or frustrated. They weren't always the brightest, and had a habit of causing problems and chaos. However, they had proved themselves loyal, dependable when it mattered, surprisingly wise at times, and good at conflict resolution.

The fifth member was Cloudjumper, the Stormcutter. Even though he hadn't known him as long as the others, having only met just over a year ago, they had developed a deep respect for eachother. Cloudjumper was much older then him, and had gained much experience and wisdom over the years. He was calm, mature, serious, loyal, and was great at giving advice and council. He looked up to him, and with thier riders being family, they were also family in a way.

The sixth member was Skullcrusher, the Rumblehorn. He had known him for a few years, and despite a tense misunderstanding when they met, they had since developed a strong relationship. They respected eachother, and they were even occasional playmates. He was protective, stoic, determined, noble, and loyal. With thier riders being family, they too had become family in a way.

The seventh member was Sleuther, the Triple Stryke. The two had a violent meeting a few years back in a dragon fighting pit, where they were nearly forced to fight to the death. Toothless however decided to spare him, earning Sleuther's loyalty, and together they escaped and took back thier freedom. He is scrappy, serious, determined, loyal, devoted, protective, and occasionally playful.

The eighth member was Windshear, the Razorwhip. They had thier confrontational meeting a few years ago, and since then their relationship has flopped between friendly and hostile. Thier relationship is more stable now, being friendly, comfortable, somewhat playful, and also competitive at times. She has trust issues, can be somewhat prickly, and doesn't like to be in the spotlight, but she is also very protective, extremely loyal, and sometimes playful.

The ninth member was Thornado, the Thunderdrum. While they had a bit if a confrontational first meeting, the boys had learned to work quite well together. Even though they had to part ways years ago, they still consider eachother like family, due to thier riders being family. He is stubborn, loyal, fiercely protective, and a good leader.

The tenth member was Grump, the Hotburple. While not exactly the closest, him and Toothless do view eachother like extended family members, due to thier riders also being like family. Grump had a tragic past with dragon hunters who mistreated him, so he truly values his friends and those who have treated him with kindness, and will do anything to help them. He is loyal, though also quite lazy.

The eleventh member was Smidvarg, the Night Terror. After a misunderstanding during thier first meeting, Toothless saved both Smidvarg and his flock. Since then, he has been grateful to Toothless, and the two have been friendly allies. Toothless always gets excited to see the flock take on the form of a giant Night Fury. Smidvarg is protective, loyal, mischievous, playful, and a bit aggressive and hot headed.

The twelveth member was Torch, the Typhoomerang. Him and Toothless had quite the rocky start, and became jealous rivals fighting for Hiccup's attention. Thier relationship did get better over time, and has transitioned into more of a playful rivalry. As a baby Torch was taken into the family by Hiccup, even if it was only briefly, and became like the little brother Toothless never wanted. He is mischievous/playfully, very protective, a bit hot headed, and likes being helpful.

The thirteenth member was Groundsplitter, the Whispering Death. Toothless earned her trust when he helped save her, and reunite her with her son, the Screaming Death, and since then she has been a ally. Like most Whispering Deaths, she is aggressive, violent, and dangerous, but she however is also very maternal, and cares a great deal for her family and friends.

The fourteenth member was Skrillex, the Skrill. He and Toothless have a complex relationship, built upon years of conflict. For a long time they were enemies, and held quite the grudge against eachother. Skrillex never quite succeeded in getting his revenge, but after Toothless risked his life to save him and helped him regain freedom of years of imprisonment, he let go of his resentment and managed to forgive them. Since then, they have developed a respect for eachother, and have even become allies. Skrillex is intelligent, highly determined, vengefull, independent, reclusive, and is fiercely loyal.

The fifteenth member was Orion, the Bewilderbeast. Having only met a year ago, thier relationship has a been a rollercoaster of emotions. They were enemies from thier first meeting, with Orion serving under command of Drago, one of Toothless' worst enemies. Orion killed another alpha, temporarily became King Of Dragons, mind controlled Toothless to try to get him to kill Hiccup but instead resulted in him killing Stoick, enslaved countless dragons including the ones of Berk, and attempted to kill both him and Hiccup. Toothless challenged Orion, and after defeating him he became the King Of Dragons himself. With all the bad blood between them one would think it impossible for them to reconcile, however Toothless knows none of it was truly his fault. Having been enslaved and abused by Drago since he was a hatchling, Drago used pain and fear to condition Orion to be completely obedient, and he was only free from his control once Drago died. He then found his way to the Hidden World in order to finally live a life a peace, and he glady welcomed Toothless as his King. Toothless feels a sort of shared connection between them, from one King to the previous King. For so long Orion was so angry, scared, desperate, depressed, and in pain due to his situation and fate, and took his rage out on everything and everyone else, especially on his own kind and those whose innocence and happiness he envyed. And through all of it, his twisted mind always tried to seek out Drago's approval for several reasons. Since then however, he's found a sense of peace and has been rehabilitated, and learned to let go of that anger and coexist with his own kind.

With the King's Council assembled for thier first meeting, they got down to business. At the end of the meeting, several decisions were made. The first is that while he was out scouring the surface for the remaining dragons, the Council would look after the Hidden World for him in his absence. The second, is that the other realms would be investigated, and the new dragons would be immigrated into suitable environments. Dragons that were already living in the Hidden World would not be relocated. As it turns out, not many dragons lived in the hidden world originally as most dragons had left for the surface eons ago. Any dragons that decided to return to the Hidden World remained in the King's Realm, and the other realms were sparsely populated by unique species that never left the Hidden World in the first place. And for the third and last order of business, a new law was declared that no violence was allowed in the King's Realm. He knows he can't control every single dragon all the time, especially dragons that were immune to the Alpha's command, but he could at least make sure dragons didn't hunt, harm, or kill eachother when in his personal realm, The King's Realm.
