Work Text:
They each carved out half of their hearts. That would be the only fair way for all of it to end. Andrew was everything to Thomas, he made him whole in the monster filled world they lived in. It was funny, how it didn't hurt. Maybe it was whatever magic that had burrowed inside of them, but when the cutter scraped into his chest, Thomas felt nothing. He was lost in the light hair and brown eyes. in the featherlight touch on his skin.
It was only fair that they went together, because neither could imagine a world without the other. So when the two boys, hand in hand, buried their heart, it was only a natural action. Only natural that his hand half a heart matched Andrew's perfectly. And when the pain started, when the magic began to scurry away and he was falling in and out of consciousness...and when Andrew asked Thomas to kiss him (to make sure it was all real) Thomas felt the most alive he ever had felt before.
Hands tangled in hair. Blood pooled between them, rushing to join the other. Because they both knew, they would climb into the other's skeleton just to stay together.
Faintly, Thomas heard the sirens on the school grounds. Maybe they were there for Bryce, hung by vines as he so deserved. Or it was for them, dying in each other's embrace. But when their breathing slowed, and their chests ached, the forest decided that right then, they belonged to it. Those sirens would never reach them. Roots of the same tree that rook Dove wrapped around their limp bodies, keeping them entangled with each other. It was the kindest the forest had ever been, often separating them in it's actions.
Well, Thomas thought as he held tight to the frail boy beside him. The forest loves its monsters.
