Chapter Text

"Well," Selina sighed as she settled into his arms for the night, "that was an exciting Christmas, and a successful Boxing Day."

Bruce hummed in agreement.

"Jason going to college, Tim moving to New York, Dick and Barbara becoming parents."

"They grow too fast." Bruce frowned. "Are we old?"

She smacked his arm.

Bruce chuckled, catching her hand and drawing it to his lips.

"We might be officially middle aged," she conceded. "We're due for a mid-life crisis or two."

"Like getting married?" Bruce asked wryly.

"Didn't you say you wanted to get married before any of your kids?" Selina teased. "Hard to do that if Dick and Babs are planning a January wedding."

"We could always elope," Bruce suggested.

"Gotham would never forgive you," Selina answered, a hint of sadness coloring her tone. "I wish this city would let you go for a day."

She was right. Bruce hated it, but because of who he was to this place, he couldn't. The city, all of it, not just high society, would expect, demand, to be part of The Prince of Gotham's wedding day. Planning galas was a ton of work, he could only imagine that planning a wedding of that scale would be just as much. Hell, the New Year's Eve Gala planning committee started over a year in advance.

Bruce blinked. "What if," he started hesitantly, "instead of announcing our engagement at the gala, we announced our marriage?"

"What?" Selina sat up and turned on the bedside lamp. "What did you just say?" She looked at him like Ivy had just made a flower crown bloom from his head.

He shrugged. "We were already planning on hijacking it a little with that announcement. Why not?"

Selina stared at him, a smile growing on her lips. "A surprise wedding? On New Year's Eve?"

"Why not? Will your dress not work for it?" he asked innocently. He's already seen her dress. It would actually be perfect.

She glared at him. "No, but my shoes might be a problem."

He smirked at her.

"Are you suggesting this just because of the betting pool the kids have going?" she asked skeptically.

Bruce hummed. "No. But it never hurts to mess with them a little."

Selina cackled. It only took a moment for Bruce to break and join her.

"Oh," she whispered. "I think I like it." She looked at him, eyes soft and shining.

"Really?"

"Yeah, Bat." She kissed him. "Let's steal a party."
