Work Text:
My baby here on Earth
Showed me what my heart was worth
So, when it comes to be my turn
Could you shine it down here for her?
When you came home, it was to an empty house. Theoretically, it shouldn’t had been too bad. There were no dirty dishes in the sink – the spoons didn’t count – and the living room was relatively clean. Therefore, what was there for you to complain about?
Why did it leave you anxious?
You took of your shoes methodically, leaving them in the doorway. You shouldn’t have done that. You had a shoe cabinet for a reason. Yet, it was routine for you and Misaki to leave your most recent pairs just near the door. Convenience: for when you went out again.
Now, it felt easier on your soul. The energy that would have taken to walk the steps to the shoe cabinet, then to orderly place it, and to step into a new pair, felt too much.
You…
You just couldn’t. Not right now.
Walking more akin to a zombie, you stumbled into the bedroom. In a tired mess you flopped face-first into the sheets, taking a while to turn over to not suffocate. You were drained, but not able to name a specific reason why. Too exhausted, you felt it would be a wasteful effort to change into lounge wear, no matter how uncomfortable it was in the moment.
And that- … felt embarrassing. Like you were making a big deal other nothing. It’s what normal people do, you told yourself. You just had to get up.
You just had to get up…
Physically, you felt unable to sleep whilst simultaneously incapable of walking the few steps to your closet. It felt so stupid. Somehow, this felt like one of the lowest points in your life – but nothing even happened?
For a while, as time passed unknowingly, you stared at the peeling paint on the ceiling. Until-
Ding!
That made you jump. In a weird way, it forced you to sit up and break the haze you had trapped yourself in. You read:

Strangely enough, that was what you needed to leave the bed. You didn’t want Misaki to see you the clothes you had all day; who would want to cuddle in their old, sweaty clothes? Soon enough, you changed into classic, comfortable pyjamas.
It felt like a bright spot in your otherwise dreary day, but at least you had this. The simple things in life, like food or movies, could genuinely help. However, most importantly, it was Misaki. Misaki was the one who tried to make you feel better. To give you a light to turn to.
Idly, you tried to melt into couch whilst letting the television blare in the background. Time dragged on, each second being slower than the last as you waited.
And waited.
Finally, the door swung open.
“Honey, I’m home!” Misaki’s presence, as always, was loud and bright. Their very voice demanded your attention, tingling your ear even after all this time. You sat up, watching them in the doorway shrugging off their boots whilst precariously balancing a small stack of take-out boxes. Due to the food, an aroma filled the space with its tantalising flavours, yet it wasn’t exactly the food that made you want.
Misaki quickly met your gaze and smiled, all soft and sweet as they eyed you in concern. “One delivery of comfort food, hot and steaming all for you. You hungry?” You nodded, not entirely truthful but wanting to all the same. They sunk into the couch next to you, thighs pressed together that their heat seeped into yours, and handed you your food.
“Thank you,” you mumbled, utensil already bringing a bite into your mouth.
Misaki simply pecked your cheek, then turned on a movie that you both had watched at least hundred times already. Without you noticing, they’d manoeuvred you to press into their side. An arm, solid and warm, wrapped around your waist whilst the other arm was used to eat. Somehow, they got you to tune back into the living world. Saying the jokes you had shared a thousand times before but still made you chuckle, to dramatically renacting the scenes with you.
Before you knew it, you were playing along, perhaps not at full energy but tons better than before. Your chest felt lighter with laughter, even as your mind was exhausted.
The both of you finished your food sooner than the movie had ended, of course. This meant, for Misaki, that they had a wider range of activities to distract you with. Like, tickling you at the sad scene that always got you every time. Or getting up to playfully twirl you around with the beautiful ending music.
At some point, it was truly getting late. You were sufficiently distracted and believed you’d be able to sleep if you so desired.
“Yeah, we could go to bed,” Misaki nonchalantly. “But should we? That is the question!”
You hummed, head resting on their shoulder, “I think I know what you’re going to say.”
“Wanna say it together? 3, 2, 1!”
“Baking,” you said with too much confidence.
“Pillow fort-” Misaki coughed, “Baking- Baking works too. That was actually my first idea - we’re so in sync.”
You laughed into their neck, and didn’t notice the shiver that came from feeling your warm breath on their skin. “Yep. We could do both?”
Misaki grinned, “Yet again! Great minds think alike. Do we have flour? I think we have flour.”
You nodded, getting off them but not feeling the absence of their warmth as they trailed behind you into the kitchen. Soon enough, the scent of baked goods filled the apartment and you two enjoyed both it and the desert Misaki brought him. Even though you just ate, you had a serving of both that you enjoyed in the pillow fort with the sound of another film in the background.
The night was long, with jokes and laughter passed between you two in a relaxed atmosphere. Miniscule crumbs were ‘smoothly’ rubbed off by Misaki that nevertheless still turned you pink. Until the early hours of the morning, you spent your time feeling as light as feather.
The feeling persisted even after you woke up later in the afternoon, with the scent of sugar from the leftovers of yesterday and the warmth of human skin pressed back into you.
After all, you had the best partner ever who would never let you feel sad for long.
