Work Text:
“Did you ever think about getting married?” Mary looked up at her girlfriend at that question, but Emmeline just kept staring at the ceiling, running her fingers through Mary’s black curls.
“I mean, who hasn’t? As a child I always saw myself in a beautiful white dress next to my husband at the altar, a big crowd, flowers, and a huge cake,” she chuckled and laid her head back down on Emmeline’s stomach.
They were naked, the only light coming from the streetlights and the moon, shining through the window of their shared flat. “And how did your wedding look as a teenager?” Emmeline asked with a smirk in her voice.
“Oh, you know,” the other woman replied and started to draw small circles on Emmeline’s hipbone. “For one, I didn’t think I would be able to marry, but I always dreamed of marrying a woman I love to death. When same-sex marriage became legal for wizards I started to think about it again.
I still saw myself in a dress, but maybe not a white one, I saw all of my friends and family, good food, dancing, and still this huge cake. But I don’t think that really matters.”
“And what matters to you?” Emmeline looked down, smiling at her girlfriend and Mary returned the loving gesture. “The person you marry, I believe. When it’s the right person, I’d marry them everywhere.”
“But still with a huge cake,” Emmeline teased and they both burst into fits of giggles. “You know me too well, Em.”
“Would you marry me?”
“Are you proposing to me, Vance?” Mary propped up on her elbows, scanning her girlfriend’s face. “What? Why, not romantic enough for you, my lady? I’m already naked in your bed, what more do you want? Want me to kneel before you and beg?”
Mary threw her head back laughing, “Something like that, yeah.” They smiled softly at each other before Mary’s gaze wandered to the clock on their bedside table.
“Oh, it’s the 14th,” she exclaimed, “Happy Valentine’s Day, my love.” She leaned forward and gave Emmeline a long kiss. “Happy Love-Day.” And they kissed again and again and again.
