Chapter Text

Some background for this AU in case I never write more for it beyond this little out-of-context snippet:

  • It's a fantasy AU set in the Middle Ages
  • Years ago, Alex left their hometown at the end of their apprenticeship, giving up a secure job and life to become a traveling merchant, in the hopes of finding where their sister ran off to and reuniting with her. What caused Kara to leave in the first place is something Alex never speaks of. Alex is genderqueer and uses they/them in their personal life and he/him/masculine terms when conducting business.
  • Maggie is a former shepherdess who was employed (and greatly abused) by the Church. Alex came across her in their travels and got her out of a very bad situation, letting her travel with them. Bow is Maggie's sheepdog, who, up until she met Alex and later Lucy, was her only friend.
  • Lucy is a massive wolf able to take human form, a being from a time long ago when beasts like her outnumbered humans. She's spent the past handful of centuries watching over a village in the south, residing in their wheat fields and ensuring them a good harvest. The villagers there worshiped her as their harvest god, but advancements in farming techniques and equipment had started to sour their belief in her. Longing to return to her homelands in the north and seeing her chance to escape during the year's harvest festival, Lucy had taken it, ending up sneaking out of the village in the back of Alex's cart.
  • Lucy still has wolf ears (on top of her head) and her tail in human form. Her canine teeth are also much sharper/more pronounced than regular humans, and she can shift her nails into claws if she concentrates. To fully transform, she needs to consume either some wheat grains (her life force is essentially tied to the wheat she inhabits) or some fresh blood.
