Work Text:
is love a laserquest,
chasing you down,
bright, then blinding,
then obliterating?
single players, or riders,
will be paired
off, and on, and off —
unless you hide
from goodnight kisses,
just feeling too old
for make believe games.
(who am i kidding,
i want the breathless zigzag
and giddy upheaval,
that two-to-three inch drop
to insta-crush our lips,
to snag our breaths
or fates.)
((yeah, okay
i like the way
we fit together,
from the shadow
of my thoughts
or as we sit
in the soft
blue-n-yellow
light of the tv —
is this…
too far for close friends?
i’m almost
too far
to
find
out.))
maybe instead of
waiting in the wings
with a broken halo
and sombre choir,
thinking that it’s a
universal truth
that you’re
too…
[insert the words
that tremble in the
dark hours
of the clock]
[insert the words
that swirl out from
sneering lips,
false leaves turned to
rot underfoot]
… maybe
you
can
fall?
here’s the double
pitter-patter
of heart and rain:
“will you—?”
you can stand under my umbrella,
you can stand inside my heart.
you can stand above me,
just those two-to-three inches,
i will lift my heels
half-way-all-the-way
all-or-nothing-way
to meet you.
“will you kiss me?”
(((so, um, bye —
maybe there’s still
a search ahead
for someone else;
but we have some things to do
in that horizon place
‘tween forever and
a smile.)))
