Work Text:

Zane Ro'Meave stepped out of the shadows, his cape billowing in the cold, damp breeze. His eyes scanned the quiet street of O'Khasis, ensuring that his secret remained just that. His heart raced as he approached the small, unassuming house on the outskirts of the city. It was here, amidst the whispers of the forest, that he found refuge from the chaos that had consumed his life. The moon cast a silver glow upon the path, leading him to the door where his most prized possession awaited.

With a soft click, the door opened, and he slipped inside, the warmth of the home wrapping around him like a gentle embrace. The scent of freshly baked bread and herbs lingered in the air, a comforting reminder of the sanctuary that lay within these walls. His gaze fell upon the figure sleeping peacefully on the velvet couch in the cozy, yet opulent, living room. This girl, this woman who had captured his heart, lay curled up in a blanket, her chest rising and falling with each inhale she took.

He did not wake her immediately, but instead stopped and waited - standing above her - and spent time studying her features, obsessively committing her appearance into his memory. Her hair, a cascade of silky locks, spilled over the pillow, shimmering with the soft light of the moon that snuck in through the cracked window. Her eyelashes, long and thick, fanned out against her cheeks, and her full lips, slightly parted, offered a glimpse into her quiet dreams. He traced the contours of her face with his eyes, memorizing the gentle slope of her nose and the curve of her jawline. It was a moment of pure tranquility in his world that knew only turmoil.

The soft, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest whispered sweet nothings to the shadows that danced around the room. He was the High Priest of the Faith of Lady Irene, a man feared and revered in equal measure, yet here he was, his armored shell stripped away, revealing a soul torn between duty and desire. She was his secret, his guilty pleasure, nestled in the quiet embrace of slumber.

The candles flickered, casting a warm glow over her hot skin, a stark contrast to the cold steel of his own. Her presence in his life was a bandage to the festering wound that his father's rule had become. Garte, once a symbol of hope for a justiced kingdom, had succumbed to the dark whispers of power, and now his own O'Khasis suffered under his heavy hand. This girl, this woman, was an oasis in this desert of despair. Her eyes, when they were open, shone with an understanding that pierced through the fog of his father's idiocracy.

Her gentle breathing was the only sound that filled the space, a stark contrast to the cries of war that echoed through the city walls. It fueled his anger, a rage that smoldered deep within, knowing that even she saw his potential, his worth, and yet his own father could not. Her whispers of comfort were like a cool breeze in a stifling chamber, a reminder that he was not the failure he feared becoming. If she, a mere mortal, could recognize his greatness, then why couldn't the man who had brought him into this world?

He approached the couch, his hand hovering over her forehead, his thumb tracing her cheek. Her beauty was not just skin deep; it was a beacon that drew him back to her time and again, a silent rebellion against the chaos he was destined to perpetuate. As the weight of his father's follies grew heavier on his shoulders, so did his need for her. It was a dangerous dance they played, a secret that could cost them both her life if it were ever discovered. And, as he watched her sleep, the thought of a world where her light did not shine was unbearable.

With the feeling of his touch on her face, she began to slowly wake from her sleep. Her hazy eyes forced themselves open to look at her cherished one, her Zane. They remained silent for moments longer, her glossy eyes trying to focus on his sharp and penetrating stare. His hands slowly fell on the rest of her body, a declaration of his need for her, a possessive claim that she never denied him. Their connection was a tether that held him to a semblance of humanity amidst the storm that raged within him.

Her heart fluttered as she reached up to touch his face, her fingers tracing the taut line of his jaw through his mask. He leaned into her touch, a soft sigh leaving his nose. In this private sanctuary, he was not the feared High Priest, nor the second son of a corrupt lord. He was just a man, seeking solace in the arms of the one who imagined the good in him when all others saw was his true darkness.

Her voice, when it came, was barely a murmur. "How were your travels, my dear?" The question hung in the air, as delicate as the thread that bound them together amidst the chaos.

Zane's gaze searched hers, his eyes dark with the weight of his recent actions. "It was... successful," he replied, his voice smooth with unspoken pride. He didn't need to elaborate; she knew that the morality of his actions were questionable. Each victory brought him immense joy, knowing that his father's power remained intact, that he had his purpose within his hands, and with them, their secret.

He sat beside her on the edge of the sofa, his hand clutching hers tightly. The silence grew thick, a testament to the unspoken words that filled the room. She knew better than to press for details; his missions were a part of him that she could never truly understand, a side of the man she loved that was as shadowed as the lands he sought to conquer.

Instead, she offered him a gentle smile, a silent promise that she would be there for him, no matter what horrors he created outside their haven. She spoke of lighter things, of the flowers that had bloomed in the garden despite the encroaching darkness, of the books she had read that brought her comfort in his absence. Her voice was a soothing melody to his weary soul, a reminder that there was still beauty in the world, if one knew where to look.

The sun had set outside, casting a soft glow through the window, painting their room in shades of gold and crimson. It was a stark contrast to the warm purple light that emanated from the crystal in Zane's hand, the power of Lady Irene's relic pulsing with a life of its own. He had brought it back from his latest mission, a final piece to the puzzle that was his hunt for divine power.

He handed it to her, his eyes never leaving hers. "Hold it," he instructed, his voice low and demanding. She took it tentatively, feeling the power thrumming through her veins. It was a heady sensation, one that whispered of power beyond her wildest dreams.

He watched her closely, his gaze intense. "Do you feel it?"

Her eyes widened as the energy of the crystal surged within her grasp. "Y-yes," she stuttered, her voice trembling.

"Good," he murmured, a hint of something akin to excitement in his tone. "Because soon, my love, I will have the power to change everything." His hand closed over hers, trapping the crystal between them.

Her eyes flickers to the night sky were not lost on Zane. He knew that in her subtle way, she was reminding him that he needed rest, that there was a time for battles and a time for healing. He nodded solemnly, understanding the unspoken message in her eyes. He knew he could not hide from his duties forever, but for now, he allowed himself to be pulled into the warmth of their shared embrace.

As they settled into bed, she began to run her fingers through his hair, a simple act of comfort that never failed to ease his tension. His eyes closed, a sigh of contentment slipping past his lips as he leaned into her touch. The soft strokes of her hand felt like a nostalgic song, each movement a note that soothed the turmoil in his mind. For a brief moment, he allowed himself to forget the wars, the deaths, the endless pursuit of power.

Her touch was a reminder of humanity, of the warmth and love that existed beyond the cold stone of the city. It was a stark contrast to the iron grip of his father's rule, the coldness that had seeped into every corner of O'Khasis. As she combed through his hair, her fingertips occasionally brushing against his scar, a reminder of battles past, he felt the burden of his birthright ease ever so slightly.

With each stroke, he felt the anger and frustration that had been building within him dissipate, leaving behind a weary acceptance of the path he walked. He knew that he could not escape his fate, not without her by his side. Together, they could face the darkness that loomed ahead, perhaps even find a way to bring the light back to the city he had once called home.

"We will find a way," she whispered, her voice filled with the conviction that had drawn him to her in the first place. "We will make it right."

He leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "We will," he promised, his voice a whisper of hope in the quiet of the night. "We will."

The room grew still, their breaths mingling in the space between them. As sleep began to claim her again, he couldn't help but wonder if he truly had the power to change the fate of O'Khasis. Or if, in the end, their love would be nothing more than a flickering flame in the shadow of the enemies he faced; Aphmau, Garroth, and the pathetically established scum of Phoenix Drop itself.

The relics’ light grew dimmer as the night progressed, the power within it seemingly muted by their shared warmth. Yet, even in the dark, he could feel her presence beside him, a constant reminder that there was something worth fighting for.

In the quiet hours before dawn, when the city's cries had ceased, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of the sea against the shore, Zane made a silent vow to himself. He would not let her down. For her, he would find a way to balance the scales, to bring peace to O'Khasis without losing the one piece of light in his life.

The morning would come soon, with it the calls to war and the weight of his responsibilities. But for now, he had this moment, this sliver of time where he was not Prince Zane Ro'Meave, but simply a man in love. And in her arms, he allowed himself to believe that he could conquer the world.
