Part 1
“Twilight”

“Bella, are you ready?!” I yell as I half-heartedly put on my sneakers getting ready to leave.

As excited as I am to see my Dad again, I am NOT a morning person and I can only muster up so much energy this early in the morning. I hear a muffled voice say something along the lines of 'just a minute' and not long after Bella comes down the stairs in a rushed fashion nearly tripping along the way.

“How long do we have until we have to be at the airport?” Bella slightly breathes out heavily.

“Don’t worry we have plenty of time, I made sure we were both up two hours early to make sure we make it there ..” I pause and turn to face her. “cause you know how Mom is” I say a bit deflated. Bella gives a small nod in return.

“Yeah…at least we’ll be with Charlie soon” she quietly says.

Living with Mom hasn't been easy for us. It's been hard on Bella and I having to take care of the house while our mom travels and does whatever the hell she wants with her life. I know Bella loves her and she's her 'best friend' but she doesn't see things how I do yet. Bella's the parent and Mom is well..she's the child. Too erratic and hare-brained to keep track of bills, make sure foods in the fridge, and keep gas in her car. Though I suppose with Phil in the picture now she doesn't have to worry about those things now either, so at least it's not our responsibility anymore. I try not to feel bitter but it’s difficult to understand how someone like Renee ended up taking custody of us. She hasn’t been a mother to either of us since we were kids. Only taking interest in Bella and I when it was convenient for her. Summers with Dad always felt so short-lived though I know Bella doesn’t exactly share the same fond memories. Her decision to go live with Dad was a last resort. My last straw was long ago when mom abandoned us for 3 months to travel with her then boyfriend Phil. I bet he's ecstatic that we're finally leaving. One less responsibility, not that we were one to him to begin with. Bella just wants to leave so mom can be with Phil, but I feel like deep down she feels how I do, though I can't always read her mind.

“Yeah well just to make sure we will be with him-” I start walking over to check her room.

“-Mom! We have to go Bella and I are gonna be late!!” I slightly yell as I peek through the door.

When I turn around Bella has already left to put the last of her bags in the car. I start heading to do the same and hear footsteps coming out of Renee’s room just as I leave. As I head outside I see Bella in the passenger seat staring out the window. I place my bags wherever they fit and open the driver’s door.

“Is mom coming?” Bella asked, still looking out the window. Seemingly taking everything in one last time.

“Yeah I heard her getting ready”

To be sure I press on the horn a couple times. The loud beeps make me flinch as I still haven’t woken up quite yet.

“MOM!” I yell “We’re gonna be la-” I get cut off as mom comes walking out the door.

“Have some patience Luna! What am I going to do with you?” She lectures me with an annoyed tone.

“Honestly I don’t understand why we have to leave so early anyways..” she grumbles. “You should appreciate every last minute you get with your mother.”

As we get in the car and settle down, Renee only gets more riled up. She rants on and on about how this whole move shouldn't be happening in the first place. I tune her out just as I’m used to doing whenever she gets in these moods. Bella flashes a look at me and turns back to do the same as I am. I pull my hoodie up and lean against the window. As we pull out of the driveway I’m lulled to sleep by the bumps and holes in the rock-filled road. Every now and then I wake up to Renee or the radio playing various songs.

“-be more like your sister…you should have never put that idea into her head-” I only hear bits and pieces of her early morning rage. “-He hasn't even seen you in over a year or is it two now…Are you even listening to me Luna?!” Her booming voice jolts me awake. I look into the rearview mirror to meet her eyes.

“Yeah mom, I know-” I yawn “But I bet Dad misses us too, it’s only fair we get to be with him. We’ll still call and email you while we’re there.”

“It’s only going to be for a year mom, just until we graduate. Plus we'll email you everyday..” Bella adds to calm Renee down.

One of Renee's requirements for us moving there was a computer so she could email and text us whenever she wanted. aka. she wants us to respond to her instantly and if not who knows how she will get. She's controlling in that way, making us feel guilty for not doing what she wants. Hopefully Charlie didn't spend too much on computer.

“Oh I know Bella I’m just going to miss you so much-” She falters slightly then adds “-I’m going to miss you both so much.”

I let out a quiet scoff before resting back on the window to try and sleep again. I feel Bella’s eyes linger on me slightly to make sure I was okay. I wasn't... but I’ll be okay once I’m home again with Dad. Breathing in the fresh air of Forks that always has that petrichor fragrance lingering, that’s when I’ll be okay.

Soon enough I drift back to sleep and dream of the drive back home. The deep green forests of La Push look magical. I feel myself being drawn to the edge of the trees. Something feels off as the earthy green color fades to black, and I turn around. The scene changes to a darkened trail with streaks of moonlight coming through the trees. A chill runs down my spine as I feel someone watching me. I turn to look behind me when suddenly I’m standing in front of Dad’s house. The light flickers in the upstairs bedroom and I swear I saw a man standing there, but when the light flickers again there’s no one there. Maybe it’s Dad? I don’t know but whoever it was I still have that uneasy feeling from earlier. I make my way inside taking in the familiarity of it all. As I make my way up the stairs they creak announcing my path. Looking down to make sure I don’t trip I slowly make my way up. Once I’m near the top I lift my head up only to be met with a darkened figure with yellow eyes staring back at me. Screaming as I flail backwards I then lose my footing. Before I make an impact on the hard floor I’m jolted awake from my nightmarish dream. I take in the scene of the flashing red and yellow lights of stopped cars in the airport drop off area, they must've influenced my dream. Shifting and stretching in my seat I find Bella taking her bags out of the car behind me.

“What time is it now Bella?” I ask with a slight yawn.

“It’s 7ish now, but we should get moving. You know how the lines can get”

“Not before you two say a proper goodbye!” Renee chimes.

I step out of the car and place my bags near Bella’s. Turning to face Renee I grimace slightly. I’ve never been a fan of forced hugs but to keep the peace I make my way over. We both embrace our mom, albeit with slight aversion to the contact. I’m not really paying attention as Bella responds to Mom’s final questions and demands. Promises to call once we get there, and promises to fill her in about our first day at school.

After the long lines we make our way to our gate. It seems like it takes forever, but sure enough we’re boarding our flight home. Sitting down I finally breathed a sigh of relief. Soon I would be back and not just for the summer. The thought of seeing Dad, Jake and Billy, and all my friends at the rez again brought a smile to my face. I couldn’t wait to get there.

Bella sat down next to me and brought out her book that she was going to read once we were up in the air. I preferred to gaze through the open window and daydream about the adventures and fresh start we would have in Forks.

“How longs the flight again?” I questioned

“Um.. I think the pilot said 3 hours”

“That shouldn't be too bad I guess” I shrug in response.

“3 hours is nothing compared to that car ride with mom” Bella jested

I couldn’t agree more. If I can survive that I can make it a measly 3 hours on the flight back. Turning to look at Bella with a twinkle in my eyes.

“You excited as I am Bella?” I smirked

“For the constant dreary rain and clouds? Being the new girl? Can’t you tell I’m just bubbling with excitement” she joked.

We both share a small laugh. Even if she hates to admit it I think she missed it just as much as I did. We went back to our distractions and just as Bella said those three hours went by in a flash.

After getting off the plane we made our way down to where Dad said he’d pick us up. I walked slightly faster and looked around for his figure. Then I saw him. He was looking around awkwardly holding his hat in his hands as he waited for us. He looked the same from when I last saw him. I turned to Bella.

“There he is-” I remarked “-Dad!!”

He turned to the noise I made and his eyes crinkled slightly as he gave a soft smile. My heart warmed as I ran to hug him. His embrace was long overdue.

“I was beginning to think I had gotten the wrong time” He softly says as I pull away slightly.

“Hi C- Dad.. it’s been a while” Bella tongue almost slips as she waves slightly

“Bells, has been a while hasn’t it-“ He adjusts to put his hat back on “-Say let’s get you girls some lunch then we can back to the house. You girls must be starving!” He says as he goes to get the extra bags we have.

“Sounds great Dad” I smiled

“Yeah I could go for a bite” Bella chimes in.

With that we take our leave and get settled in the car. Dad fills us in on small details, how he updated a room for us in the house. He tries his best to make small talk with us as awkward as it is. I don't blame him.. after all we came abruptly back into his life. I'm pulled out of my thoughts when Dad turns to Bella and says

"Your hair’s longer."

"I cut it since last time I saw you."

"Guess it grew out again." He plainly says. I can't help but snort a little at the adorable response.

After some more awkward questions and silence we got to a diner, after grabbing some food we head back on the road. The ‘Welcome to Forks’ sign passes by after some time. I almost forgot how tiny this town is, population of 3120..I guess 3122 now. I look out the window at the trees and a sense of deja vu hits me. I shake the feeling off once the house comes into my line of sight. I see all the firewood in the shed, Dad's garage full of fishing gear, and of course the charming old house. Hopefully once things settle down Dad can take me fishing with Billy and him.

“Glad you girls are finally home, I’ll put your bags in your rooms and let you girls get settled” He mused as he parked the car to do just that.

“Thanks Dad, I’m glad we’re back too” I offered a genuine smile and turned towards Bella who gave a similar response. We watched as dad headed inside.

“Wanna head in?” Bella questioned

“Yeah go ahead just give me a second I have to grab my bag”

“Okay see you in there” she nodded and started heading inside.

I grab my bags as I see Bella and Dad head upstairs. My bags feel kind of light and I wondered if my clothes were going to be suitable for the cold weather in Forks. Might have to borrow some of dads flannels. I swung the bags over my shoulder and I was going to head inside when I saw someone start to pull up in a red pick up truck. As my vision of the driver get's better I see a smiling Jake and Billy in the front seats. Without hesitation I drop my bags and wave at them eagerly, they honk back in response a couple times. This day couldn't get any better...home at last.
