A Lesson in Kryptonian Physiology

Summary:

The Kents learn about some aspects of Kryptonian biology they weren’t aware of.

Lois Lane glanced up at the ceiling before turning her gaze onto her eldest son.

“Jordan, can you go get your brother,” She asked, “Tell him dinner’s ready.”

Jordan rolled his eyes, “Sure mum.”

“Watch it,” she warned him.

Jordan wisely made his way up the stairs towards his twin’s room and knocked on the door.

“Oi Jon, dinner’s ready,” Jordan frowned when he didn’t hear a response.

Jordan quickly used his super-hearing to hear inside his brother’s room. He heard Jon’s heartbeat coming from the centre of the room. Why would Jon be standing in the middle of his room. Jordan opened the door and after walking in he came to a halt. In the middle of Jon’s room was what looked like a nest made out of their spare linens with Jon’s blanket covering a large lump inside.

“Um, Jon?” Jordan called out as he slowly approached the nest, “Mum wants you downstairs for dinner.”

The only response he got was a groan from his twin. Honestly, he was tempted to lay down in the nest, but he’d rather not provoke his mother’s temper. He made his way to the nest and leaned down to shake what he’s guessing is Jon’s shoulder only to suddenly find himself pulled down into the nest with Jon’s arms wrapped around him. Jordan sighed as he tried to wiggle out of his brother’s grip, only it was proving more difficult than he’d thought. Both of his arms were pinned down, he gradually began to use more force, but Jon’s arms remained locked in place. Okay, this is fine. It’s not like he’d never been hugged by his twin before.

“Jon, we need to get up. Dinner’s ready and you don’t want mum to get annoyed at us.”

Jon just huffed in response.

“Guess I have to use the big guns then,” Jordan remarked before yelling, “Mum! I’m trapped and Jon’s not letting go!”

“Jon, you know you can’t be so rough…” Lois yelled before her voice went quiet, “with your brother…”

Jordan noticed Lois entering Jon’s room seeing her realise that despite having super-strength Jordan wasn’t able to escape from his brother’s grip.

“Um, Clark,” Lois called out, “This isn’t urgent, but you might want to come home.”

“Not urgent?” Jordan asked increasingly, “You’re not the one in a death grip.”

“Death grip?” Clark asked having just showed up before noticing the makeshift nest, “What’s with the nest?”

“It was here when I came in,” Jordan explained, “Anyway I went up to Jon and shook his shoulder, next thing I knew I was in the nest arms pined down. I tried to get out but he’s not budging.”

Clark looked at him in disbelief obviously thinking that Jordan was probably being overcautious. He moved over towards his sons and clasped his hand over Jon’s arm and began to gently move it. When the arm didn’t budge, he gradually began using more force causing Jon to start groaning.

Clark blinked after suddenly finding himself being flung through the wall out of the house. He quickly flew back into Jon’s room where he saw that Lois and Jordan had shocked expressions on their faces. But hey, at least Jordan was able to free one of his arms before Jon locked his arms around his brother.

“So…” Clark drew his wife and son’s attention, “I think we need to take Jon to the Fortress.”

Lara finished her examination of Jordan’s vitals.

“So, is Jon okay,” Jordan asked his grandmother’s hologram as Jon immediately latched onto his twin once he was released from his scans.

“Jonathan will be fine,” she announced, “His current behaviour is comparable to other Omegas that experience induced Heats. Even taking his exposure to yellow starlight into account.”

“Omegas? Heats?” Clark asked in confusion.

Lara blinked at Clark, “Yes. Why are you confused? Surely you were aware of Jonathan’s Dynamic?”

“What’s a Dynamic?” Jordan asked.

“You… do neither of you know?” Lara inquired.

Jordan got the feeling that if she could Lara would sigh in exasperation.

“Just assume we know nothing,” he suggested.

“That is probably for the best,” Lara remarked, “Let’s start with the basics. Like Humans, Kryptonians have binary sexes, Male and Female. In addition, they also possess trinary dynamics, Alpha, Beta and Omega. I will assume you are aware of how reproduction between Males and Females work.”

“Um, yes we know how that works,” Jordan quickly admitted his face turning red.

“I see,” Lara responded before resuming her explanation, “Then we shall move to the Dynamics. Essentially Alphas are capable of impregnating Omegas regardless of their sex, although the Omega would need to be in heat. For Female Omegas their heats are synced to their monthly cycles. Male Omegas however usually experience Heats on a biannual basis.”

“Oh, so Jon isn’t intersex, he’s an Omega,” Clark remarked.

“According to my scans Jonathan is a some-what healthy Male Omega Human-Kryptonian hybrid,” Lara told him.

“What do you mean ‘some-what’?” Jordan asked.

“I have no other records for comparison aside from the singular scan from when you two were in utero,” she explained before turning towards Clark, “You should have had them go through regular check-ups. As the only known Human-Kryptonian hybrids it should have been a priority. Perhaps if you had done so the emergence of Jordan’s powers would not have come as a shock.”

Clark grimaced, “When father scanned them, he said that they showed no signs of ever developing powers.”

“On Krypton birthing matrixes are usually kept in rooms that receive a large amount of natural sunlight,” Lara explained, “Jordan and Jonathan would have had no exposure to sunlight until they had been born. As to my statement about Jon being ‘some-what healthy’ my scans indicated that he is still experiencing long-term aftereffects from his use of X-K, that in addition to his inverse counterpart’s attempt to merge with him and high levels of stress likely resulted in an induced Heat.”

“Will he be okay?” Jordan asked concerned.

“He will likely experience a higher-than-normal temperature increase then he would have in a natural heat,” she explained, “Make sure he has plenty of liquids available. I would also suggest giving him items that carry scents he finds familiar. I would suggest beddings as they can be used to construct a nest.”

“Yeah, he made one in the centre of his room,” Jordan told her.

“Understandable. His bed is clearly not wide enough to support a nest.”

“Quick question,” Clark asked, “When do Omegas start their heats?”

“For Female Omegas their heats start alongside their monthly cycle,” Lara explained, “For Male Omegas their heats usually start around thirteen.”

“Thirteen? How come we never noticed before?” Jordan asked.

“Under normal circumstances heats don’t affect one’s ability to function. Usually, it’s just a slight increase in temperature along with wanting to be surrounded by the scent of family.”

“Okay, but what about when he pulled me into the nest or when he threw dad through the wall?”

“I believe Humans have a phenomenon called ‘Hysterical Strength’,” Lara remarked, “Kryptonians have something similar where we release the energy stored in our cells to achieve feats beyond what we are normally capable of, however on Krypton these feats don’t reach the same level as a Kryptonian on Earth. I suspect that the nature of the induced heat coupled with the absorption of Earth’s yellow sunlight has resulted in Jon entering this state. However, I cannot confirm that as there are no available comparisons. I suspect that after the heat has ended, he will return to his normal level of physical ability.”

“Wait, so Jon is an Omega, what about Jordan and myself,” Clark asked.

“The both of you are Alphas,” Lara answered.

“Um, aside from the… um… sex stuff, what’s the difference between dynamics?” Jordan asked.

“On Krypton the solar energy absorbed from our star Rao manifests differently depending on one’s Dynamic,” Lara explained, “For Alphas they tend to be physically stronger and durable. Betas are typically faster. Omegas tend to have enhanced senses particularly sight and hearing. It’s not uncommon for an Omega to recognise family by their heartbeats. Of course, such abilities pale in comparison to a Kryptonian that has absorbed yellow sunlight.”

“Good to know,” Jordan remarked, “So just so we’re clear, Jon will be fine if we wait this out?”

“Correct,” Lara answered before turning towards Clark, “Might I suggest that you refrain from attempting to forcibly separate Jonathan from his twin.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Clark responded.

“Do you think Jon could use heat-vision while he’s like this?” Jordan wondered as he ran his fingers through his twin’s hair.
