Chapter Text

“Yugi, I’m so glad you came back,” Grandpa said, giving him a hug as he came through the door, Yugi returning it half-heartedly as he looked around.

Everything seemed the same, which was a relief in some ways… but then there’s a part of him that found it embarrassing, coming back to Domino after spending the last decade outside of it, as if he was downgrading from the life he had. That part sounded suspiciously like his ex, or at least the version of her from the last few weeks of their relationship. As if-

No. He wasn’t going to think about that. Not when he just came home, or at least where he’s going to stay while his new apartment was getting repairs, something about the building being used in a fight between White Dragon, Domino’s self-proclaimed superhero, and some hot-shot supervillain. It’s probably why it was so cheap to get, even with his salary.

Grandpa ushered him in, his high school friends there to greet him, even Anzu, who was on Facetime from New York.

He let himself get lost in the familiar warmth, glad to be there. At least he was, until Mama asked the worst question.

“So, when is your girlfriend coming over? I really do want to meet her.” she smiled, the air freezing over as he kicked himself in the head for not telling her about that.

“Ah, well, we broke up,” he managed to get out, rubbing his arms to calm down.

“Oh? Is it because she was trying to get you to stop eating burgers all the time? Because that would be really stupid, especially since it seems you still have some weight from that time in Texas. Honestly, if you don’t start caring about yourself then-“

“No!” he cuts her off, not wanting to deal with this on top of everything else. “No. It- I mean, I really don’t want to talk about it right now. Especially since I just came back and everything.”

Hopefully that would smooth things over with her.

“Oh really? Because it seems to me like you’re running away from a good thing,” Mama ignored him, “especially since you seemed so happy last time we talked. And after Anzu broke your heart.”

“That’s not what happened and you know it,” Anzu hissed, glaring at her from her screen.

“Listen, I really don’t want to talk about it now, it’s been a long day, and I need to get in early tomorrow,” he got up, trying to get up the stairs as fast as he could, Mama arguing with everyone else there before Jou, his loyal, thoughtless best friend shout out his reason out loud for all the world to hear.

“That before she cheated on him with some asshole in their own apartment!”

He slammed the room as more arguing occurred, his tears soaking his pillow as he tried to get some sleep. So much for a nice time back home.
