The Pocket Monster Initiative

Summary:

Professor Tomorokoshi Takasugi has just invented the Poké Ball, and he needs adventurous (or reckless) volunteers to help to stress test it. He recruits Kamado, a husband and father of two, and Beni, an enigmatic old man who seems to know quite a bit about Pokémon.

The professor hopes his ambitions change lives, maybe even the world. He’s ready to brave these changes.

For better and for worse.

This is the uncut version of my story written for the Hisui Chronicles Zine.

Chapter 1: Entries #1 - #3

Summary:

Tomorokoshi can’t seem to make his invention work.

Chapter Text

Entry #1

This is the personal diary of Tomorokoshi Takasugi. I will be using this to detail the progress of my invention, the Pocket Ball.

It is my hope that this invention will bring great change across the world. The ability to ensnare monsters and keep them close at hand… not only is it a boon for researchers such as myself, but perhaps we can put this era of fear behind us…!

Entry #2

Kaneru told me that “Pocket Ball” was a ridiculous name. How could a daughter of mine possess such sass?! I asked her to come up with something better and she offered me “Poké Ball”.

…Well, to her credit, it rolls off the tongue quite nicely. I suppose it shall henceforth be known as the “Poké Ball”.

Entry #3

The past few weeks have been a struggle. While I’ve been able to consistently activate the “Shrink” mechanism of the Poké Ball, it appears there’s something lacking from the actual capture mechanism.

Everything I throw the Poké Balls at is summoned inside of its chamber… There are times when the ball lands on the ground and is shattered instantly by the monsters making their escape.

However, there are times when I can see the monster struggle inside the capsule. Twice now I’ve seen the ball retain its target for a few moments. During both occasions, the ball would wobble and bounce on the ground until shattering like all of the others.

I must ask my colleagues for any suggestions.
