Work Text:
Danny was living in an apartment in Paris, France, when he got the letter. Akeleth was fading.
They took a deep and ragged breath and the exhale was almost a sob. Danny didn't know the guard as well as he would have liked, but he knew that he was old. Old by even the standards of most ghosts. Akeleth had almost earned the title of ancient by age alone, a genuinely impressive feat.
Jazz, Ellie and Marinette walked into the room he was standing in, they were laughing about something until they noticed Danny. That he was holding a letter and had a tear running down his face.
Adrien heard the laughter still from where he was doing dishes in the kitchen, "Someone die?" he asked almost joking, but not quite.
"I need to go to the Ghost Zone" was all Danny said.
"what's going?" on asked Jazz as Danny opened a portal.
"Akeleth is fading." Danny told them as he looked back.
Jazz stepped up to Danny to hold his arm, "I'll come with you."
Ellie took his other arm, "I'm coming too," She said "I'm going to miss his stories."
"I will let Batman know that you are missing the next Young Justice meeting." Marinette told them.
"Stay safe," Adrien said, "If you get home to late to join us for diner, I will make sure that youyr meals will be in the fridge if you are hungry when you get back."
The three steeped through after nodding. Directly on the other side was Dorathea's kingdom where Akeleth had been guard for centuries.
Princess Dorathea, leader elect of this particular realm, was there to greet them when they stepped through.
"Greetings, Danny, Ellie, Jazz. It is good that you arrived so soon, Akeleth does not have much longer."
"Where is he?" Ellie asked.
"This way, in the gardens" Dorathea said as she beckoned them to follow.
As soon as Akeleth was in sight, the trio gasped. He was almost as thin as a shadow and just as transparent.
Ellie ran up to hug him, "You can't fade yet." she said between sobs.
"Little child," Akeleth said, "Few choose when they will go into the final darkness," He stroked her hair, "I am fortunate to have been around as long as I have but I can't hold myself togerther for much longer. You have such a bright future to look forward to, but this is my end."
Ellie sobed all the harder for hearing that.
Dany turned to jazz, "I am going to get Sam and Tucker."
"Be quick." Jazz told them.
Danny nodded and opened another portal and was gone for but a minute. When he came back at the end of that long minute, Sam and Tucker rushed out from behind him.
Back on earth, Ladybug was talking to Batman.
"Phantom is going to be late or miss the Young Justice meeting." She told him.
"Can you say why?" Batman asked.
"He is giving last good byes to a friend of his, even ghosts have their ends" She told him.
"I understand and will let the others know." Batman replied.
Back in the Infinite Realms.
Others who had known Akeleth for centuries where also gathered here to say there last goodbyes, from the Far Frozen to the Winding doors and the Deeps where most ghosts stay away from.
Ellie, who had only known Akeleth for a short time from anyone else's perspective, had actually known him for almost all of her existence and was near inconsolable.
Akeleth looked around and then spoke what would be his last words "I do not dread this, there is no fear of this last darkness in me for I know I will not suffer from it. I am not going to say not to cry but I will ask that you remember the happier moments and hold onto them. They make this whole existence thing worth while, but mine has come to an end. I remember the taste of raspberries."
And then he was gone. Evaporated like mist in sunlight.
