Work Header

the smile of the sunbeams under the rain

Summary:

So Keigo took her by the hand and led Touya to her dorm. You would think they would run to get away from the rain, but Keigo walked calmly. Sometimes, she would glance over her shoulder, her mascara mixed with her freckles, and smile at Touya. Her hair was stuck to her forehead, and the rain drops ran down her cheeks, down her neck, and into her shirt. Despite the harsh wind, Touya swallowed hard, her insides burning.

Or after they get caught in the rain together, Touya invites Keigo to the League’s movie night. When they are forced to sit next to each other in the cinema, Touya begins to feel overwhelmed by the weight of the feelings she ignores. Maybe it’s time for everything to change.

Work Text:

Touya couldn’t understand how she ended up sitting next to an exchange student she’d only known for a few days. Before the lights went out in the theater, Touya looked at Himiko, who was sitting a row ahead of them a little to the left, and found her grinning at her. The camera flash that followed caused some of the audience to curse. Ochako, who was sitting next to Himiko, gave them a thumbs up and beamed. Considering that they both bought the tickets, Touya shouldn’t have been surprised by what had happened.

Right…

Touya sat comfortably in her seat and crossed her legs. She tried to avoid looking at the girl sitting next to her using all her mental willpower. But it was impossible, like her body being covered in flames and turning into a supernova. When the commercials started playing, she glanced at her. Her short blonde hair was wavy—maybe a little bit curled at the end? Touya couldn’t help but think that they looked like feathers. Her cheekbones were striking. Her cheeks were slightly flushed and her freckles were prominent. Her lips were pink and full. But what was most breathtaking were her eyes. They were the color of amber dipped in honey. Her lashes were long and curled. Her eyeliner was sharp and professionally drawn.

Her brown sweatshirt was too big for her, but Touya knew exactly what was hidden underneath.

Keigo Takami. She had come to UA University on an exchange program from HPSCollege, a private university in Fukuoka, to get her master’s degree. From what she had heard, Keigo had experienced some problems there, and if that was true, Touya couldn’t understand how the school was still open.

The new girl was doing her master’s degree in pediatric patients, just like Touya. There were six students in this program, and Touya didn’t feel the need to be in contact with any of them unless she had work to do.

Until her sister drops Keigo off at their rehearsal.

Fuyumi, one of the top students in the UA University, might be the first and only person to volunteer to show the new students around campus. Naturally, Keigo met Dean Kaina Tsutsumi and Fuyumi on her first day. But when a problem arose with the group project, Fuyumi didn’t know what to do and came up with the worst idea she could think of: entrusting the new girl to her older sister, Touya. Fuyumi was supposed to be the most level-headed person in the family!

She had rushed into the empty classroom where the LOV was rehearsing and without introducing Keigo to them, Fuyumi said she had to go because she had urgent business. After blinking at each other, Keigo introduced herself with a smile like the sun. And so, Keigo Takami found herself in their group of (chaotic) friends. Touya didn’t need to say that Keigo had become a part of them in such a short time.

Touya didn’t know whether to curse or thank Fuyumi.

Considering that all of this happened in a week, maybe it was all just a figment of Touya's imagination.

They had gotten caught in a downpour after the Rare Diseases Symposium. She was soaked from head to toe the moment they stepped out of the conference hall, and neither she nor Keigo had an umbrella with them. The new girl hadn’t gone to dinner with the other grad students and had stayed until the end of the symposium. The only thing between their seats were their bags.

Touya cursed as she pulled out her phone. She didn’t think anyone would come to pick her up at this hour—Shuuichi might, but Touya would rather walk home in the rain than be in the same car with him.

“Touya?”

She nearly dropped her phone. She turned to the new girl with a frown, her wet black hair sticking to her forehead. “Takami?”

Keigo’s honey eyes widened, her red lips parted, and she let out a hearty laugh.

Touya scowled. “What?”

“You—” Keigo wheezed. “You look like a wet cat.” She smiled when she saw the look Touya was giving her. “A grumpy one.”

“Fuck off,” Touya said, her glasses covered in water droplets. She normally didn’t wear them outside, but the new girl was distracting her with every move. She didn’t even think about her glasses as she hurried out of the conference room to get away from Keigo.

And if it warmed her heart to remember Keigo telling her how cute she looked when she first saw Touya wearing glasses, that wasn’t anyone’s business.

“Stop pouting, Touya,” Keigo said, the rain ruining her perfect eyeliner.

Touya crossed her arms over her chest. “Why would I do otherwise right now?”

Keigo sighed and pointed over her shoulder. “My dorm is a ten-minute walk from here.”

“Okay?” What did she expect Touya to do with this information?

Keigo rolled her pretty eyes, but her lips curled upward. “So I’m saying, how about you come to my room to get out of this rain?”

Touya was hallucinating. There was something in the air, or the rain. Maybe she was poisoned. Shit, maybe she was dying—

The soft hands that gripped her wrist made her flinch. As dark clouds hovered over them, electric currents began to flow through her veins instead of blood, as if lightning had struck her head.

“I’m fucking freezing,” Keigo groaned, her hand sliding into hers, intertwining their fingers. “You better keep up with me, Touya.”

She really must have been hallucinating, because she couldn’t understand when Keigo opened the door with trembling hands and pulled her in.

“Home sweet home,” Keigo sighed and took off her shirt, revealing breathtaking crimson wings tattoo that—

Touya backed away, squealing as her hips hit the sharp edge of the table. Startled, Keigo turned around and Touya nearly fainted. Her soft skin glistened from the rain. The lace of her bra completely hugged her breasts. Touya could see her hardened nipples.

Keigo was saying something, but Touya’s brain was too numb to process it. As Keigo walked, her eyes continued to drift downward, no matter how hard she tried not to. Her abs became more prominent with each movement. Touya wondered if she could completely grasp Keigo’s waist with her hands. The button and zipper of her pants were undone, sliding down her hips a little more with each step, revealing more of red red underwear—

“Touya?”

Keigo’s concerned voice should have brought her back to her senses, but they were so close that her breasts were right under Touya’s nose. If she moved her head, she could disappear between them.

“Hey!” Keigo said as she held her by the shoulders. When Touya’s eyes fell on her biceps, she nearly groaned. Once Keigo mentioned that she plays volleyball and swims. Her legs must be muscular too. Touya couldn’t help but wonder if Keigo could strangle her if she wrapped her legs around her neck—

“What?”

Keigo waved her hands heatedly between the two of them. “You just zoned out!”

“Okay?” Touya didn’t know what to say because her train of thought was disrupted.

“Unbelievable,” Keigo said with a sigh. Turning around and blessing her eyes with her enormous tattoo, Touya wondered if she should just turn around and leave. But Keigo suddenly appeared in front of her and handed her something. “Here.”

Touya reflexively picked up the items in her hands. “What is this?”

Keigo looked at her with a frown. “Clothes?”

“Oh,” Touya said, not trusting what will come out of her mouth. “Thanks. Uhm… Where’s the bathroom?”

Of course, she would change in the bathroom like a normal person. She wouldn’t undress out of nowhere like Keigo.

“Directly across the room,” Keigo said, her hands going to her back—her bra—as Touya stared at her feet and stormed into the bathroom. She locked the door as soon as she got inside. She put the clothes in the sink and ran her hands through her wet hair.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

She washed her face with cold water first, afraid that she would lose control if she allowed herself to think. Before taking off her wet clothes, she tied her long black hair into a messy bun. Then she took off her long black jacket and hung it on a hanger, she was not going to throw her baby on the floor. She kicked off her boots, winced when she saw her wet socks. She easily took off her shirt, which was half tucked into her pants and extended to her hips, and threw it on the floor. But taking off her tight jeans was a complete torture.

Not knowing what to do with them, she picked up the pile on the floor and threw them into the empty laundry basket. She was shivering when she looked at the clothes Keigo had given her.

There were two fluffy towels on top of. When Touya ran her hand over them, she felt like she was touching a feather. Its softness was sleep-inducing. After quickly drying herself, she wrapped her hair in the second towel. But she nearly slipped when she saw a bra and underwear. Touya pressed her hand over her mouth to keep from screaming.

Fucking hell!

Of course Touya wouldn’t wear these!

She placed them on the sink and focused on the actual clothes. A red sweatshirt, black loose t-shirt, black sweatpants, and a pair of chicken patterned socks. Touya quickly got dressed, trying not to focus too much on the thought of wearing Keigo’s clothes. She flinched when she looked in the mirror, her smeared makeup making her look like something out of a horror movie. Her eyes caught the makeup remover on the shelves. She bit her lip and sighed when she looked in the mirror again. Without rummaging through the cabinets too much, she found the cotton and started to clean off her ruined makeup.

Before leaving the bathroom, she dried her hair one last time with the towel. Now all she had to do was get out of this dorm room and go to her own house.

Unfortunately, as soon as she opened the bathroom door, there was an angel waiting for her.

“Hey,” Keigo said with a smile. She was finally wearing a sweatshirt, with lilac pajamas underneath. “How are you feeling?”

“Dry,” Touya said, putting her hands in her sweatshirt pockets.

Keigo threw her head back and laughed, Touya’s face strangely warming.

“You’re funny, I like that,” Keigo said, tucking a strand of golden hair behind her ear.

“I—”

“Do you want to hang out for a bit?”

“What?” It seemed like Touya was now starting to hear voices.

“I mean…” When she saw Touya raise an eyebrow, Keigo buried her face in her sweatshirt. “It’s still raining—in fact, it’s gotten heavier! Instead of going out in this weather and getting wet again, maybe—maybe you could stay here for a while? Until the rain stops, of course! We could order something to eat? We could watch a movie or a tv series? Or we could just do nothing!”

Touya couldn’t understand how Keigo had said all of this without taking a breath. Or how she understood what she said.

“Uhm, thanks but…” Touya said, not that she even needed to explain it to her, but Keigo’s shoulders slumped, her eyes averted. “But I’m having dinner with my mom today.”

Touya almost changed her mind when big sad golden eyes, shadowed with disappointment, turned to her.

“But, uhm, we can go to the cinema on Friday?”

Keigo stared at her with wide eyes. “Just—Just the two of us?”

“What? No,” Touya said quickly. “With the League. It’s movie night.”

Stupid. Idiot. Fool.

“Oh… sure,” Keigo said, playing with the strings of her sweatshirt, her freckled cheeks redder than usual. She probably had a fever because of the rain. “You, me, and the League.”

Maybe this was a big mistake—

She was startled when her phone started vibrating non stop while the last commercial was playing. When she saw who was texting, she swore.

“Who’s that?”

Touya almost dropped her phone. “Fuck!”

“Shh!” said a guy.

“Shut up, the movie hasn’t started yet,” Touya hissed. The man in the first row turned around completely.

Now the movie starts!” Keigo said with her perfect smile. “So let’s move on.”

The man grumbled but turned back to the front. As the opening sequence played, Touya let out a deep sigh.

“Who was that?” Keigo asked in a whisper.

“How the fuck would I know?” Touya whispered back. “I don’t know the guy—”

“I’m not asking about him,” Keigo said softly and put her hand on Touya’s arm. When Touya looked at her, she noticed how close their faces were. Shit. “Who was texting you?”

Her voice was soft, its honey magic hiding the thorny poisons beneath. Her golden eyes shone in the darkness like the eyes of a bird of prey. Where Keigo placed her hand, Touya was ablaze.

“Nobody important,” Touya swallowed.

“Oh?” Keigo raised her eyebrows, the light hitting her face bringing out her sneer. “If you’re checking their messages at the cinema while the movie’s still on, they must be pretty important, don’t you think?”

Touya could stare at her heaven-blessed face for hours.

Keigo tilted her head slightly, their lips almost touching.

“Himiko,” Touya said breathlessly, her heart pounding in her ears. “It was Himiko who texted.”

“Oh?” Keigo said, her perfect eyes widening. Even though suspicion still clouded them. “She—What did she say?”

“She’s glad we’re sitting together,” Touya said, but Keigo was already focused on the screen. Touya sighed, leaned back in her seat, and began to watch the movie. Unfortunately, it was Himiko’s turn to choose this week. Although Touya had expected to watch a horror movie, she was stuck with a romantic comedy.

When the main character spilled her coffee on the possible love interest at the coffee shop, Keigo nudged her.

“What?”

“Here, take this,” Keigo said and thrust the box of popcorn into her hand. “I noticed you didn’t buy anything.”

“Because—” Touya didn’t feel like it, but when Keigo looked at her with those big, beautiful eyes, she stuffed a handful of popcorn into her mouth. Maybe this had been the wrong move. She started coughing and tried not to focus on the grumpy faces that turned to them. They can fuck themselves!

“Shit, here,” Keigo said and handed her a drink. Touya drank the cola without thinking. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and tried to catch her breath.

“T-Thanks.”

When her mind realized what had just happened, she almost choked on the breath she had taken. Keigo had given her her own drink. Touya had drunk her cola. Their lips had touched the same spot. In a way, they had kissed—

“Are you okay?” Keigo asked, rubbing her back. Touya’s train of thought seemed to falter. “If you want—”

“SHUT UP!” Jin shouted from where he sat. “Can you please be quiet?”

When the audience tried to say something to Jin, Tenko and Kurogiri silenced them with a single look, while Keigo couldn’t help but laugh.

Why is her smile so sweet like sunbeams? Touya thought to herself.

What. The. Fuck?!

“Touya?”

“I’m okay, pretty bird,” Touya said, but paused as her mind caught up with what was spilling from her lips. Fuck.

As the movie continued and Keigo didn’t say a word, Touya began to wonder if she should leave the theater.

“Good to know,” Keigo said softly, “hot stuff.”

That’s it. Touya was having a stroke!

Keigo smiled at her one last time before settling back down to watch the movie. The same couldn’t be said for Touya. The excitement of being around Keigo, spending time with her, was making it hard for her to focus. Touya still had the popcorn bucket in her lap, and their hands would occasionally touch. Not to mention the fact that they shared Keigo’s drink. You could say Touya had completely forgotten about the movie, because what would she do with a stupid romcom when there was an angel stealing the sunlight right in front of her eyes?

If the lights hadn’t suddenly turned on, Touya would have almost been caught staring at her. When did the movie end? When she gathered her things and went outside with Keigo, the others were already waiting for them. As Himiko smirked at her, Touya raised her eyebrows.

“Let’s eat something!” Atsuhiro said, clapping his hands.

“I’m starving,” Shuuichi said with a sigh.

Before Touya could say anything, Keigo grabbed her wrist and dragged her through the mall. Apparently Keigo was the one who would choose the food, but Touya didn’t really care. She was too busy blushing from ear to neck while the others laughed at them.

“Guys!” Keigo called out as they stopped in front of a restaurant. “Come, the chicken here is great!”

Keigo let go of her as the others giggled and sat at the table indicated by the waiter.

But Touya wasn’t ready for this. She grabbed Keigo by the hand and pulled her to a secluded corner.

“Touya?” Keigo asked, her eyebrows furrowed in concern. “Is there a problem—”

“Wanna go on a date with me?” Touya asked without taking a breath. She couldn’t stay near this beauty any longer and try to bury her feelings. Keigo was drawing her closer with every smile. She had to take a chance.

“You mean—” Keigo said, clearing her throat. “You, me, and… the League?”

Touya quickly shook her head, not going to repeat the mistakes of that day. “No, just you and me.”

“Like—Like a date?” Keigo asked, blinking her beautiful eyes, her eyelashes caressing her cheeks.

“Yeah, birdie, like a date,” Touya said with a chuckle. “Just like I said.” She tilted her head to the side, strands of black hair falling into her face, but that didn’t stop her from smiling. “Do you want me to repeat my question, pretty bird?”

Keigo, her cheeks burning, looked away but nodded with a swallow. Touya knew she was trying to hide her face.

“Don’t be like that,” Touya said and gently grabbed Keigo’s chin, turning her head so she couldn’t look at anything or anyone but her. “Don’t hide your beautiful face from me.”

“Touya!”

“Yes, angel?” Touya said and Keigo groaned. “As much as I love hanging out here with you, it’s better if we don’t keep the others waiting.” Keigo pouted and Touya bit her lower lip to keep from laughing. “I was serious about my question, y’know. Keigo Takami, wanna go on a date with me?”

This time her voice was lower, she was no longer hiding behind humor. She had offered her heart to an angel.

When Keigo rolled her eyes, she got a dagger to the heart.

“Idiot,” Keigo muttered. Second dagger. “Of course I’ll go on a date with you!” She wrapped her arms around Touya’s neck and beamed. “I’ve been waiting for you to ask that for a long time, Touya!”

These words, this smile, had healed all of Touya’s wounds, filled her soul with butterflies.

“Then let’s start planning our date after dinner, what do you say?” Touya said, holding out her hand.

Keigo smiled as she held Touya’s hand. “I actually have a few plans in mind.”

The two of them giggled as they sat down next to their friends, and everyone except Ochako, Shuuichi, and Atsuhiro handed Himiko money. It turned out that they had been waiting for this moment for a long time too.

But Touya was too happy to care. Her eyes were on Keigo—her girlfriend—who was happily eating her yakitori. And the two of them had the perfect date to plan!
