Chapter 1: cafeteria

Chapter Text

for some reason, the fanfic was in my native language, probably due to the power outage yesterday, this may have caused some problems when publishing, sorry

Suguru was finishing cleaning the counter as the few remaining customers of the night slowly dispersed one by one. After years of effort and courage, the café was thriving, known as one of the most famous spots for its sweets, drinks, and breakfasts. It was just another normal closing shift. Riko had already left for school, so Geto was counting the minutes until he could finally lock up. Even when living a dream, everyone has days when they just want to go home.

On the other side of the street, silver hair observed the café in the process of closing. Determined to see it for himself, the figure moved, crossing the road. He stopped in front of the door and pushed it open, making the bell chime through the establishment. Geto lifted his gaze from the counter to the new customer who had just entered—a man with white hair, dressed in an outfit that balanced casual and formal, with dark sunglasses covering his eyes.

Gojo’s POV

After hearing so many comments about the café that supposedly had the best sweets in Tokyo, I couldn't pass up the chance to see it for myself. Megumi talked so much about the place after visiting it with his friends that curiosity won over the cat.

A man a little over 1.80m, with black hair tied up in a bun, dark eyes like obsidian, and common work attire, watched me as I took a seat at one of the chairs in front of the counter. He pursed his lips before speaking:

"Good evening, sir! How can I help you?" – A soft, low voice, slightly tired but carrying a contagious warmth.

"I’d like to know what the best-selling sweet here is." – I spoke as casually as possible, not wanting to startle anyone with my deep voice. Why did I even care? Oh, right, Megumi told me to. Before I could get lost in my thoughts, I heard his response.

"Our bestsellers are the strawberry mochis, but we also have manju and taiyaki. If you prefer variety, we offer ohagi and sanshoku dango as well." – As he listed the five sweets, he lifted a finger for each.

"I’d like some mochis to go, in different flavors. Actually, give me three of each." – It might be nice to bring some for the others. "But I’d like one now too—chocolate, to be exact."

"Give me a moment, sir." – With smooth yet swift movements, he placed a small plate with a mochi in front of me. I noticed he was already preparing the others for takeout, positioning everything neatly. I picked up the mochi and took a good bite, savoring the taste, holding back a small hum of satisfaction. Mochi may all be the same, but there’s truth in the saying about a magical touch—a common dish can taste a hundred times better in the hands of a mother or a skilled cook.

"What’s the secret to it being so delicious?" – I decided to comment, flashing my signature charming smile.

"I can’t reveal family secrets," – he replied with a light chuckle, "but maybe I’ll make an exception for a handsome guy."

"Oh? Will you?" – It wasn’t unusual for people to compliment me, but the confidence in his tone sparked something within me. Maybe it was just the food talking.

"Who knows?" – he said before turning his attention to another customer.

Maybe following that damn advice wasn’t such a bad idea. I could already picture Yuji celebrating. Speaking of Yuji, it must be around 6 PM now. I checked the time—6:17 PM.

"How much is it all?" – It was time to go.

"625 yen." – Cheap. I placed the money on the counter.

"Have a good night."

"Good night! Please come again!"

Gojo walked toward the car waiting for him. As he got in, Nanami gave a small nod—just one was enough for him to know he’d be driven home.

Inside the café, Geto finished everything up and started locking the doors and windows, exhaustion finally settling in. Once the last door was locked, he lowered the security shutter. The street was starting to get a bit livelier with passing cars, pedestrians, and city sounds. He began his walk home—not too long a distance, but definitely not the safest route either.

It didn’t take long before Geto stood in front of his door, unlocking it and stepping inside, only to find his sisters asleep on the couch. Nanako was still in her school uniform, while Mimiko had already changed.

"Nanako, wake up. How many times do I have to tell you to change out of your uniform when you get home?" – Geto spoke in a casual tone, but got no response. "Pretending to sleep won’t get you out of this."

"Why are you so annoying?" – Nanako pouted before getting up and heading upstairs.

"Teenagers." – Geto sighed, heading to his own room. As soon as he closed the door, he let out a breath, walking toward his bed. He glanced at the mirror beside it, taking in his appearance.

At 23 years old, he had taken on the responsibility of raising his sisters after their parents abandoned them. Being their mother wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but he wished he could enjoy his youth a bit more. At least his grandfather’s old shop—now a café—was his. His grandfather had transferred it to his name before passing away.

Standing up, he headed to the bathroom, stripping off his clothes and deodorant patch before stepping into the shower. The hot water flowed over his body, relaxing his muscles. It had been a long day, but at least the handsome customer had brightened it up a little. That kind of thing usually didn’t stick in his mind, but the conversation had been smooth enough to be both comfortable and memorable.

Meanwhile, in another part of the city, silver hair entered a room carrying a shopping bag.

"I’m back!" – Gojo announced as he approached a group of teenagers who immediately looked up upon noticing him. Yuji was the first to speak.

"Gojo-san! I see you went to the café we recommended!" – Yuji beamed, bright and cheerful, his pajamas making him look like a 10-year-old despite being 16.

"Did you like it?" – Nobara asked, pointing at the bag.

"It was good. I brought some for you guys too—I got three of each since I wasn’t sure which ones you liked." – Gojo said, then turned his gaze toward Megumi, who had been silent. "Something wrong, Gumi?"

"Gojo… what do you think about me getting a job?" – Megumi asked, looking straight into his eyes, as if afraid of the answer.

Alright, he was a yakuza’s son, but couldn’t he just be a normal teenager too? Gojo pondered for a moment before asking:

"What kind of job do you want?"
