Work Text:
Aya was just chilling inside her room with Ran by her side, scrolling through her phone looking for entertainment on social media.
“Did you know our nerves can spread longer than 40 miles? I do.” Ran read out loud the information she just received from her phone.
“That was so random.”
“Blame the internet.”
Ever since they became a couple, Ran has spent her time at Aya’s place, and Aya would do the same at Ran’s place. Either just to hang out or make out, it's their way to enjoy each other's company.
The news that they became a thing was a surprise to their friends, mostly their bandmates. But then again, if you mix a bubbly idol with a rock and roller emo girl, you'll get the opposite attraction that fits so much. Chisato warned them about keeping their public images secret so it wouldn’t cause too much chaos, which both of them were doing pretty well.
Right now the both of the vocalist were lying next to each other, playing with their phones (They had already done lot of things, so playing with phones was the only solution existed for now since it didn’t take too much energy) showing each other funny, cute, and even interesting posts.
After her endless scrolling on social media, Aya decided to check her playlist and snuggle on Ran’s warm body.
“Do you have any playlist for me to hear, Ran-chan?”
“Ehh? You sure you want to hear mine?”
“Why wouldn’t I? Come on, just give your girlfriend some playlist so she can snuggle more with her gorgeous girlfriend.”
Flustered, Ran turned her face away so Aya can’t see her blushy face, “Geez, you're exaggerating.”
Aya had made a bold decision to sync Ran's playlist to her phone while they were hanging out. She thought that would be adorable and even romantic—sharing vibes, right?
She was wrong.
Track one: "I'm Just a Kid" by Simple Plan.
Aya blinked, “Okay, a little bit dramatic, but sure.”
“It’s classic.” Added Ran.
Track three: "Faint” by Linkin Park
Aya paused the music. "Ran."
Ran looked up from her phone with a blank expression. "What?"
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Why?"
Aya chose not to judge for the time being and assumed this was a normal playlist. But by the time she scrolled and listened further, she was very certain she had an emo girlfriend.
When Aya hit play once more, MCR's "Disenchanted" began to blast from the phone speaker.
Aya's mouth fell open. "Ran."
Ran let out a sigh. "You synced my playlist, not a crime scene."
"Do not consider this a playlist. It is the music of the downward spiral of a vampire antagonist."
Ran shrugged. "The music is good."
Aya turned to the next tune. "The Script, Breakeven. Are you heartbroken, Ran? Did I cheat on you in a dream, or something?"
"No, you're ridiculous."
"What do you mean that I'm ridiculous? In any case, what does the music represent to you?"
She got a side-eye from Ran. "Just vibe maintenance,"
"What kind of vibe? The one where you wait for someone who never returns while staring out a window in the rain every day?
"Yes."
Aya fell face-first onto the bed in the most dramatic way. "When is this phase going to end?"
Smiling, Ran bent over her. "It's not a phase."
To gaze at her, Aya turned over. "That's exactly what people in a phase say."
Ran gently prodded her cheek. "You knew what you signed up for."
Aya let out a groan. "I believed I was seeing the quiet, calm flower store girl. Not the walking container of hot topics."
Ran grinned. "But she's still your girlfriend."
"Indeed. You and your terrible emo soul are loved by me."
Ran kissed her forehead. "You'll get used to it."
Scrolling again through the playlist, Aya found something that made her in disbelief once again.
"Ran."
"Hmm?"
"Why is there more than one version of Linkin Park's song 'Numb' in this playlist?"
Ran barely raised her head from her phone. "They strike in different ways based on the mood."
Aya gazed. "A piano cover is one of them."
"Exactly."
With wide eyes, Aya sat up in disbelief. "You hear 'Numb' on the piano when you're... what? Making cookies?
"When I'm contemplating life or giving plants water.”
"Ran."
Ran glanced at her. "What?"
"You give emotional breakdown to plants?"
Ran blinked slowly. "That is the ideal moment for reflecting."
Aya began re-listening to Ran's music. In dramatic astonishment, her nose wrinkled.
"Ran."
"Huh?" With her arms folded behind her head, Ran lay flat on her back and gazed up at the ceiling.
Aya raised the display. "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams"?
Ran took a lazy look. "A classic."
Aya snorted. " 'I walk a lonely road~', Are you alright, girl?"
"I'm with you now, aren't I?" Ran joked.
Aya looked at her. "Next one: Simple Plan's 'Welcome to My Life'?"
"A classic as well."
"Ran."
"What?"
"Do you ever feel like breaking down~" After a dramatic song, Aya pushed the phone towards her. "This is a plea for help!"
Ran smiled. "I can relate to it."
"Baby! You have a girlfriend who gives you snacks and embraces you when you are distressed. What about this is relatable?"
"I had eyeliner in my soul from birth."
Aya caught her throat. "Stop that!"
Laughing, she fell on top of Ran, sticking her cheeks out and straddling her waist. "Just admit you're just a goth romantic."
“I am not a goth romantic,” Ran deadpanned.
Like the evidence at a crime scene, Aya held up the phone. "You have Nickelback, Simple Plan, Three Days Grace, Evanescence, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and—wait—Staind?"
Unfazed, Ran nodded. "The greatest hits of depression"
Aya gave a deadpan. "Are you alright?"
Ran reclined on the sofa. "Triumphing."
"Are you thriving? This playlist, Ran, sounds like an adolescent sobbing into a window that has been splattered with rain.”
"Relatable content."
"And you've saved Sum-41's ‘With Me' twice."
"I enjoy suffering in stereo."
Aya gave her a blink. "Your girlfriend is with you. You have a full stomach, are snuggled up on a comfortable bed, and I even made you some lemon tea earlier."
Ran took a sidelong peek. "I'm still depressed."
"You're not depressed! You're dramatic and spoiled."
Ran gave a small smile. "That can be valid."
Leaning closer, Aya held the phone above both of them. "What exactly is this— 'I Hate Everything About You'?"
Ran's eyebrows went up. "A song about love."
"Ran."
Ran shrugged. "You did slam the door on me the other day, to be fair."
"You were making fun of my voice!"
"I was playing a melody."
With a groan, Aya fell sideways into her, bringing Ran down with her. "I want a refund, and you're an emotional mess."
Arms automatically around Aya's waist, Ran chuckled gently. "It's too late."
Aya hummed as she cuddled closer. "All right, but some of these lyrics are just ridiculous. Such as, 'Am I yet more than you bargained for?' Come on.”
"I enjoy poetry that hits me straight in the chest."
"You're lucky that I adore you."
Ran's head tilted a little. "You've said that more than ten times already today."
“Yeah,” Aya said, grinning smugly. "I must counterbalance the melancholy in your playlist. You require sunlight. and possibly counseling."
"The cost of therapy is high. Your affection is free."
Aya snorted. "That was smooth. Disgusting. But smooth."
Ran grinned with pride.
With the excitement of a girl finding hidden treasure, Aya continued to scroll. " 'Nobody's home, it's cold and empty...' Goth queen, are you alright? Should I see how you're doing as a teenager?"
In her sleeve, Ran moaned. "Don't psychoanalyze my playlist, please."
She was disregarded by Aya. "My goodness, 'Sometimes I give myself the creeps.' Ran. This is Basket Case. I had no idea you were going through that."
"I wasn't," mumbled Ran.
"Liar," Aya hissed, her tone now completely theatrical. " 'I never thought this world would be what it is—' Alright, we've entered the realm of Three Days Grace. This is the energy of a high school corridor montage."
"I enjoyed the rhythm!"
With uncontrollable laughter, Aya collapsed back onto the bed. "It's unbelievable that I'm dating the human version of a Hot Topic store."
A pillow was thrown at her by Ran. "Says the girl who spends every night listening to Tyler and The Weeknd like she's in a breakup montage."
Aya smiled and grabbed the pillow. "My music selection doesn't sound like a goth vampire crying in the rain, at least."
Ran gave her a look. "It was you who requested to hear it."
Aya smiled. "And I will never let it go."
Leaning over the edge of the bed, she put the phone down, sat up, and gave Ran a quick peck on the cheek.
"You little emo loaf, you've got my love."
Ran gazed at her. "Never again call me that."
Aya gave a wink, "It's too late. It is now canon."
Her playlist might be filled with teenage depression. But Ran knows she was the happiest girl on earth when she had her lovely Idol Girlfriend, she wouldn't trade her for anything in this world.
