grwm going to infiltrate a cult

Summary:

[magic-less au] The transformation from En to Audrey.

Notes:

A flash fic while pondering how En would maintain personas in universes without the changeling ability.

Work Text:

“We can’t let the masses know we can shapeshift,” Vis had once said, applicator waved in the air for emphasis. “They’ll burn us for witchcraft.”

And it was true enough, En reflected as they finished up their eye liner – an almost completed Audrey Whistler now looking back at them from the mirror. The memory always came to them now when readying for a mission. It was a much better one than thinking of crammed backstages of hair and makeup.

Audrey briefly bat her eyes at the mirror with a cool smile. The expression fell just as quickly as she reached for the container of contacts. Specifically, the set with AW written in smudged sharpie on its raised surface.

The door burst open with almost a surprised energy, as though the perpetrator – Willow, half in their Cognaut get up – was just as startled by the speed it swung open.

“-one more thing,” they were saying, movements frantic in that way they got when seized with inspiration. Or mortification.

Audrey flipped the contact case lid open with an audible snap as Willow provided some last minute intel. She kept her eyes split between Willow's reflection and the placement of the contact. At least it was just one.

Willow's hurried summary of the last five years of the cult’s political atmosphere was always a nice balm to the sting of placing in contacts.

“-that is if the opportunity er, uh… presents itself,” Willow – now more the mysterious biker Cognaut than not – finished.

Audrey grinned at them via the reflection. “My, that does sound easy enough.”

The sarcasm wasn’t lost on Cognaut and they laughed, breathless and fitting on their gloves. All that was left was the headgear.

“Mm,” a chuckle, “maybe the good detective could-”

Luca's presence was heard before it was seen. But it was always felt. He pushed the door the rest of the way open, arms cradled around a bust and wig.

“It’s ready~ ⭐” Luca sing-songed.

(“How are you doing that with your mouth,” Cognaut muttered under their breath.)

“Ah, my thanks, Mr. Karrnson,” Audrey smoothly cleared some space for the bust. The wig’s curls spilled over Luca’s hands and the armoire.

“Anytime.”

It certainly looked and smelled a lot better after the… incident. Audrey double checked her wig cap one last time.

“Oh!” Luca said brightly and squirmed his way back out of the door – briefly squishing Cognaut against the wall.

Audrey and Cognaut exchanged looks. They didn’t have to wait long.

“I found this while I was out scouting,” Luca said when he returned.

His hands were gently cupped around a peony in full bloom. The fragrance wafted gently up as he moved it closer.

“I felt sorry for the last one that got crushed…” Luca gestured and Audrey allowed him to fasten it to her lapel.

He made a happy hum when he pulled back and Audrey had to agree. “Perfect.”
