"Do you think it would be weird to have a figurine of your own boyfriend in your house?" Logan inspected the shelves of the store, it was a decently sized place but the motley crew of mutants still stood out like a sore thumb among some action figures and oriental comics, Children walked by pointing excitedly at them, being held back by their parents, and groups of teenagers watched them from afar, sometimes some were even bold enough to approach them and ask for photos.
"I don't have a boyfriend, Logan" Summers replied stiffly beside him, his voice neutral and his face expressionless except for his tightly clenched jaw, the guy was always tense as if he expected the ceiling to collapse at any moment.
Logan glared at him with a sarcastic, unimpressed look for about two seconds before turning his attention back to Deadpool Nendoroid on the shelf. He nudged the toy's little red head with a finger lightly, inspecting it for any flaws in the paint job. "I know." He said irritably without looking at Scott. "No one is questioning your heterosexualitie or your marriage, bub. I'd ask your wife instead but you're not cool enough for there to be figurines of you being sold in stores at the mall." He turned to face Cyclops and knew immediately that the bastard was rolling his eyes at him. There was no way to be sure behind the stupid dark red glasses but Logan knew.
"You're doing that thing where you pretend to insult me to cover up how you're actually just bragging about how cool you think your boyfriend is." Scott replied dryly with a hint of teasing, Logan grunted something in response without feeling the need to give a proper response, partly because Summers wasn't entirely wrong, although Logan argues that those two things aren’t mutually exclusive, Wade is cool as hell, most teenagers who aren’t boring nerds would agree, just as Cyclops is a pain in the ass so insulting Scott wasn't a cover. “If you want to buy this crap, take it and let's go. You've been staring at this toy for 20 minutes, you're slowing us down."
Logan picks up a box from the back shelf containing a doll identical to the one in the display case he was previously inspecting and turns the box over in his hands. “I'm just wondering if it would be too weird."
Scott's eyebrows shoot up so high that Logan can't see them beneath his hair. "Weirder than you dating Deadpool?" he says with a sneer. "No offense, Wolverine, but there's nothing that would make this any weirder than it already is."
Poor guy, he had no idea.
He scowled at the other mutant and rolled his eyes when the corners of Scott's tightly pressed lips betrayed that he was trying hard not to laugh.
Even Logan had to admit that making him and Wade a public thing had done wonders for his relationship with Scott, their teasing was now more playful and mischievous instead of hiding real anger and resentment beneath harsh words and now he could actually have a real conversation with Jean without Scott hovering over them like a stone gargoyle as if he was wary that Logan might would stole her from him right under his nose.
He still loves her, of course, he always would. But the fire had dimmed, there was a limit to how much you could yearn for a person who clearly loved someone else, Summers-Grey wedding a few years ago had been the end of it for Logan and he had backed away, the flirting giving way to silent admiration and the charming smiles becoming encouraging. Even so, until recently Scott had still been wary and suspicious of him no matter how many times Logan had assured him that he no longer had any interest in winning Jean's heart.
It was almost like Wade and Vanessa, Logan sometimes thought, him and Jean.
It wasn't the fairest of comparisons, obviously; Wade and Vanessa had a real relationship for a considerable amount of time — something Logan never came close to having with Jean — but it wasn't because Jean had never been his that he loved her any less than Wade loved Vanessa.
Not that they didn't still love them, of course they do, just in a different way. And it's perfect like this: Logan is happy to have Jean's friendship just as Wade is grateful that Vanessa is still his friend. Logan also admits that he enjoys the reluctant friendship and awkward companionship he shares with Scott now much more than he ever did their passive aggressive rivalry in the past.
At some point, Jean herself approached them, carrying shopping bags filled with balloons and confetti and other standard party items, she stopped next to Scott with a hand on his elbow and looked at the box in Logan's hand in an amused manner.
"I think it's cute." She responded with a smile, she wasn't there long enough to catch the conversation but she must know from Scott, Logan honestly had no idea how their telepathic connection works. "Is not weird."
That was all it took for Logan to make up his mind, Jean's opinion obviously counted much more than Scott's, and what did Slim know about dating guys anyway? "Wade has a Wolverine he got from a friend a few months ago." Logan explained as if he owed an explanation as to why the figurine caught his attention so much, he smirked, the chibi Wolverine toy had been a gift from Peter and Wade hadn't let go of that toy for three whole weeks. "Maybe he's feeling lonely."
Scott made a fake choking noise, very mature Summers, Logan glared at him and checked to make sure no one was looking before extending a few inches of his middle claw to him. He didn't care about seeing his reaction and went to the cashier, paid quickly and left the store where Ororo was waiting for them with bags of decorations. Logan examined the choosing of colors and themes carefully. The improvement in his relationship with Jean and Scott was by far not the only consequence that his and Wade's public coming out had; it turned out that with his relationship being public knowledge and often a topic of conversation at the mansion, it meant that he was the only openly queer teacher at the institute.
Which in turn meant that he was the one whose students didn't fit into the perfect square of heterosexuality and cisgenderism went when they wanted to vent. Logan had lost count of how many kids had confided in him that they were gay or lesbian, or bisexual or transgender.
Kit was one of those students, Logan was the only one who knew that the kid was actually a boy and he made it his job to make sure that nothing in the shopping for his surprise birthday party preparations was too girly. Kit wasn't ready to tell the others in the mansion his identity yet, but Logan would make sure the kid felt as comfortable as he could on his special day by contributing with the little he could.
"Do we have everything?" He asks Ororo, the couple following him further away.
"I think we finished." Ororo agrees, she gives a curious look at the plastic bag in his hand. "And what's that?"
Logan hides the bag behind his back and tries to shrug casually. "I thought of Wade when I saw it.”
"So you bought it? How romantic." She winked teasingly. "By the way, are you going to bring him to the party?"
“I don't know." He glanced over his shoulder to see Jean and Scott approaching hand in hand, smiling at each other. A few years ago the sight would have made him squirm with jealousy, now it just makes him miss Wade. “I mean, it's the kid's birthday party. And they don't even know each other.”
"It's normal to bring your partner to these types of events Logan, Kitty won't mind. Besides, you never properly introduced us." Scolded Ororo, Logan honestly thinks the situation needs no introduction. Everyone knows who Deadpool is and everyone knows who the X-Men are, Wade has even been to the mansion a few times to pick up Logan or look for Colossus or Yukio and Ellie. Logan was about to tell Ororo this when Scott and Jean catch up to them and Jean interrupts their conversation.
“What are you guys talking about?" The red-haired woman asks, approaching Ororo to walk beside her friend. Scott for some reason decides that this means he should walk beside Logan, he tries not to think about it too much. Their newly developed friendship is still recent and awkward and Logan doesn't know if they're on the same page about it, especially because he doesn't know exactly what page he's on.
"About Logan bringing Wilson to Kitty's party." Ororo replied, smiling at Jean and pushing her own shoulders against Logan's.
Scott's eyebrows fly up and he opens his mouth in a horrified and perfect ‘O’.
“Oh my god, no.” The jerk's expression was so annoyingly exaggerated that it makes Logan wanted to bring Wade in full Deadpool costume, Althea, Mary Puppins, Dopinder and even Russel just for spite.
In the end, Logan takes Wade, and only Wade, to the party. He unnecessarily introduces him to his teammates officially as his boyfriend. Summers' face every time a criminal or sexual joke comes out of his mouth makes it all worth it, Ororo is the only one who actually keeps a conversation with him for more than two minutes. She even laughs at some of his puns and Jean makes an effort to make a good impression on him despite Wade's stream of nonsense.
Hank tries to greet him kindly only to be rudely cut off when Wade yells about the time that the furry mutant shut the door in his face when he came to visit Colossus. Logan definitely earns a lot of favorite teacher points with the kids after his partner very successfully manages to embarrass all the teachers who give them homework and group work with randomly selected groups. Wade is probably the one having the most fun at the party, he eats three pieces of cake and takes hundreds of photos with students of all ages, at some point during the party Logan finds himself sitting next to Negasonic Teenage Warhead while Wade and Yukio pop balloons with plastic forks. He and Ellie exchange blank stares, biting smiles with their teeth and pretend to hate being there as they watch their partners, It's not a game that any of them are particularly good at.
Kit smiles and waves at him, Logan smiles back. He hopes the boy likes his and Wade's gift, Logan spent a lot of time thinking of something perfect, a warmth forms in his chest growing inside him, he is proud of Kit and hopes he can feel proud of himself, of being who he is. Just as Logan is proud to be Wade's, to have him.
When they return to home – Wade's home, which houses Logan almost full-time despite his own cold, lifeless, and characterless room in the mansion – Logan waits for his boyfriend to go to the bathroom and places the little plastic Deadpool next to the little Wolverine toy on the television hack, he stares at the figurines for a while feeling…sentimental. And kinda stupid.
He turns off the lights and goes into the room, the next party on the lawn of that mansion will be his and Wade's, he swears
