It's Just a Headache

Work Text:

Luca had already decided that he should have stayed in bed with Rocker when he'd had the first head shot of the day. He had got through the mission entirely unscathed and had grinned manically at his fellow teammates before walking into a low hanging pipe. He was fairly sure he wouldn't live that little move down until retirement.

Sadly that had been the high point of the day and the situation had just gone downhill from that point. When a blow to the forehead with a copper pipe was a high point, then a root canal would have been a welcomed option, let alone bed with a wonderful boyfriend in it.

The rest of the shift had been a nightmare; he had been puked on, screamed at, slapped and tripped and by lunch time. He had contemplated actual retirement four separate times and daydreamed about fishing at a log cabin with Rocker next to him because his head already hurt like hell, and because what the actual fuck.

“Fuuuuck.” He groaned, tipping his head back against the wall behind him wher ehe was sat on the plastic hospital chair. His ass was going numb, adding insult to injury.

He had survived the shift and was finally on his way home when it had happened. He had pulled out of the precinct in his truck and had gotten a grand total of 100 feet before he had been rear ended by a dude in a speeding Tesla that had been screaming on his phone and hadn't noticed that there was a truck in the road.

He got taken out by a Tesla. Something else that he was never living down.

He must have blacked out for a few seconds when his head hit the steering wheel because his ears were ringing when his eyes had fluttered open and his chest hurt from the bruising of the seat belt. Since his truck was basically a tank the guy must have been going at light speed.

A call for the police consisted of a member of the public yelling her head off until someone from the precinct caught on to what was going on, following which he was being pulled about and assessed by a person with grabby hands that looked distinctly like Fowler only… multiplied. He couldn't focus, his vision weaving in and out mercilessly as his stomach rolled unhappily.

A loud arrest for careless driving and an ambulance ride later had found Luca puking his guts up with a shiny new concussion diagnosis and a nurse calling his emergency contact to come and get him since he figured out his phone was still in his truck, which had been towed back to the precinct parking lot for him to deal with later.

“Here, try some more water.” Rocker's car was in the shop but Luca was willing to bet that he had glared the uber driver into light speed to get there within 20 minutes. He had certainly been velcroed to the older man's side since the second he'd arrived. More often than not holding a bucket.

Luca had been scanned, cleared and discharged just in time for the sun set to blind him through the window of the lobby where they were waiting for their ride.

“If I drink that I'm going to puke.” He protested, not opening his eyes. If he moved he would also puke and he'd had quite enough of that already. He was pretty sure he was nothing more than a dessicated husk.

“So drink it and puke.” He felt when Rocker sat next to him, his boyfriend was very careful not to rock the interlocking plastic seats with his weight. “I'll get you more.”

“If I puke, my head will explode.” He whined, scrunching his eyes tighter and only managing to give himself more of a headache.

“Drama queen.” It was said softly though, and he could feel his boyfriend's gaze against the side of his face as he kept his head very very still.

“I'm serious, my brain is trying to force its way out of my eyeballs.”

“Come here.” He felt Rocker shifting A bit and then a thick, firm arm worming its way under his neck. He let his boyfriend guide his head down to his thick, shoulder and covered lucas face with the hood of his sweater blocking out the harsh hospital lights and the sun trying to drill into his skull. He breathed out a sigh of relief and in a healthy breath of Rocker smell that took the rest of the tension out of him. He could never get enough of that smell.

It smelt like home.

“Better?” He could feel his boyfriend's voice rumbling through his chest more than he could hear it.

“Much better.” He said, nuzzling into the soft material under his face. He felt safe and surrounded, a feeling that always went hand in hand when Rockers protective streak came out.

“Don't go to sleep.”

“That's a myth.” Luca mumbled, already half way asleep despite the thumping in his brain.

“It's not a myth that Tommy’s nearly here and if you fall asleep he will bitch that we are holding him up.”

Contrary to his words he could feel Rocker's thumb rubbing softly over his shoulder, squeezing encouragingly every so often. Reminding himself that Luca was here and he was fine, if a little beat up. It wouldn't be the first time.

“He loves me too much.”

“Should I be worried about that?” Rockers voice shifted into a teasing tone; it was no secret that Luca thought he was the “hot twin” and wouldn't be swayed by Tommy and Bucks insistence that clearly Tommy was, in fact, hotter.

It was a point of reassurance between the two, just one of many that they peppered their everyday, insecure lives with to make it just a little more secure.

“Nope. Wrong twin.” He smiled under the fabric and he knew Rocker to hear it in his voice.

The other man was silent for a few seconds and Luca was just about to drift off again when he felt Rocker lips press a kiss to the top of his head and the younger man let out a deep, cleansing breath.

“I'm glad you are OK.” He said quietly. Seriously. “Scared the shit out of me.”

Rocker wasn't good at the whole emotions thing. Like his brother it was hard for him to open up and trust someone with what he was feeling and not try to tear him down for it. Both brothers felt so much, it made him sad to think about it. And kind of murderous if he was honest.

He really wanted words with their father.

“It's just a headache, I'm fine.” he reassured softly. “I promise.”

They sat quietly for a little while longer just soaking up each other's presence before a booming voice called from the entrance of the hospital.

“OK, let's go.” Luca groaned, the sound reverberating around his head where it was still cushioned on Rockers meaty shoulder.

“Tone it down big guy, my heads about to explode.” He mumbled and breathed until he had forced his gag reflex into submission.

“He get checked out yet?” He heard Tommy say much sore softly and he could practically feel the eye roll from his boyfriend.

“We are literally at a hospital, dick. What do you think?”

“I could make you call an uber you know.”

“Can we just go home please?” Luca whined softly, “Bicker later.”

He wanted his home and his bed and his boyfriend and his cats. And his custom black out blinds because this sun was going to be the end of him, he just knew it.

He reluctantly pulled his head out from under Rockers hoodie and winced at the shift of light hitting his eyes. The vertigo hit him for a second and he swayed where he sat.

He hated head injuries.

Once he felt a bit more stable and that he could love without hurling all over the hospitals linoleum, he gave a short nod and Rocker sprung into action.

“Let's help you up.” He said and the brothers flanked him on either side and gently tugged him to his feet.

Both the Kinard men were big softies really which was obvious in the way that they handled themselves and the people they loved. They moved Luca through the hospital and out the front door making the path as clear and smooth as possible.

Turns out that Tommy had bought reinforcements; Luca could just about see Bucks large frame behind the wheel of Tommys truck parked close to the entrance. Probably in a place that it definitely shouldn't be unless there was a first responder behind the wheel ready to get out of the way quick.

The brother helped Luca into the back seat of the truck, gently shutting the door behind him. He could have cried with happiness when he saw a pair of black out sunglasses offered in his direction from the giant in the front seat with a wry, sympathetic smile. He was so glad one of them thought of it and slipped them on his face as his eyes closed in relief.

“Hey,” he heard to his right, outside the door of the truck. “Are you OK?”

“I'm fine, I wasn't even there.” Rocker's voice was a few notches into reassuring, a stark contrast to the sniping from earlier. The brothers may be like oil and water sometimes but there was no doubt that they cared about each other.

“OK.” Tommy said and Luca could almost see the slightly awkward casual pat on the shoulder that he gave Rocker when he wasn't sure touch would be welcome. “Call me or Evan if you need anything later though. We aren't doing anything.”

“Don't worry I won't interrupt date night.” Rocker snarked and then there were heavy footsteps around the back of the car and lighter ones going straight to the other back door. “Hey? Thanks.”

“Anytime.” You could hear the eye roll in Tommy's smooth voice. “Dick.”

Luca smiled at the return to form and, finally a bit more comfortable, drifted off to sleep.
