I Didn't Say Whose Wife or Mother

Summary:

We know her only as Katniss Everdeen's mother, a woman perpetually in mourning, missing the various lives and relationships she once had. Now she finally has the chance to tell the world who she is.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

"Who are you?" the hysterical patient demands.

She considers it. Is she...

May's best friend? The beautiful outgoing merchant girl was murdered in the Games.

Joe and Alice's daughter? They threw her out, along with her threadbare wedding dress.

John Everdeen's wife? That strong, funny, brilliant man now sleeps beneath a million layers of rock.

Prim and Katniss' mother? One daughter died, the other may as well be dead to her.

She misses them. But now she knows who she is--someone who serves. A healer, a caretaker, a friend. "I'm Clara," she says. "Is there anything else you need?"

Notes:

Title is from a quote taken from an excellent homily I once heard at Mass about a woman who was 'tested' before being admitted into Heaven, who kept getting asked 'who she was' and who kept defining herself as someone else's spouse, someone else's parent, etc.
