Work Text:
In the dimly lit halls of the Ministry of Magic, a heated discussion was brewing between Hermione Granger, the Ministry's top rune analyst, and Draco Malfoy, a newly appointed Auror. The air in the Department of Mystical Texts crackled with energy as the two engaged in yet another spirited debate over an ancient rune translation.
"Honestly, Malfoy," Hermione teased, glancing up from a scroll filled with runes. "You couldn't tell the difference between a peace glyph and a fire incantation if your life depended on it."
Draco smirked, leaning casually against a bookshelf. "And yet here I am, alive and well, thanks to my overwhelming charm and roguish good looks. But nice try, Granger."
Hermione chuckled, rolling her eyes. "Yes, because I'm sure smirking and hair gel are the key to success in the Auror office."
Draco put a hand dramatically over his heart. "Oh, they definitely help. Besides, I'll have you know, my translation suggests this rune points to a hidden chamber full of cursed treasures. That's much more interesting than your so-called 'scholarly' interpretation."
Hermione raised an eyebrow. "You mean the one that accurately identifies the rune as an old marital blessing? I can see how you'd confuse those, given your history with cursed rings."
Their banter reverberated through the office, each trying to suppress a grin. It was well known among the Ministry staff that Draco and Hermione's arguments were the stuff of legend, partly for their frequency and partly for their chemistry.
Draco stepped closer, lowering his voice. "You know, Granger, if we combine your intellect with my... well, 'charm,' as you put it, we might uncover the truth together.
"Oh, I see," Hermione replied, feigning deep thought. "So you think flirting is going to make me agree with your mistranslation?"
Draco shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "It’s not about agreement, Hermione. It's about distraction. You'd be amazed at how effective it is."
Hermione laughed, nudging him playfully. "All right, Malfoy, here's what we'll do. I'll double-check your rune work if you agree to teach me that 'overwhelming charm' technique. After all, two heads are better than one, especially if one insists on constant hair maintenance."
Draco nodded, extending a hand. "Deal. But only if you promise not to run the entire Ministry with that dazzling smile of yours."
Hermione took his hand, shaking it firmly. "You drive a hard bargain, Malfoy. But I think we can work something out."
And with that, their playful argument morphed into a joint mission, with both determined to prove their point and learn a little more about each other along the way. As much as the translations mattered, the thrill of their debates was just as magical.
