Work Text:
The horrid, sharp noise of the school bell hit Kris’s ears like a lightning, sending a shiver down their spine as they jumped from their sleeping position. Had the day gone by so quickly? Who cares. The echo of the bell filled the school hallways as the students began to pack their bags, not giving poor ms.Alphys the chance to wrap up today’s lesson. Kris took a look around, examining each of their classmates before turning directly to their back, facing the individual who they had recently gotten used to calling their “best friend”.
It seemed that Susie was in a similar situation, groaning and rubbing her face, hair thrown in a way that made her head indistinguishable from a wild bush. Kris couldn’t help but give her an upside down grin before yelling out a “Pstt”. Truly miraculous how much the two had in common. It felt almost as if they completed one another, so similar yet completely distinct.
Susie shot up at the sudden alarm from her friend, her hands falling from her face to drop off the desk. She leaned back on her seat and let out a long drawn-out yawn. “Ughh, why are we even forced to take these lame classes if they know damn well we’re only here to use Alphys’s lectures as bedtime stories?” She laughed at her own joke, the rasp in her voice prominent as ever. If Kris didn’t know any better, they’d think she looked quite disappointed when instead of laughing along they gave her an eye-roll and started packing up.
Susie followed suit, finishing much quicker given the fact that the items scattered across her desk consisted of a half-finished pack of gum and an obviously bitten pencil. She got up and stretched in front of Kris, who grimaced and tried to avoid eye contact. It was bothersome how comfortable she was around them, even if they couldn’t figure out what discomforted them in that.
When they got to their feet, they didn’t have time to balance before being taken into a headlock from the much larger purple girl next to them. Her smirk wide enough to rip her face in half. She took a quizzing look around as she dragged them across the classroom and into the hall. She raised an eyebrow before asking:
“So, got any plans for the afternoon? I really gotta show you something!”
Kris could only groan in response. Turns out that being yanked around right after waking up from an uncomfortable slumber was not a good combination at all. They teasingly pushed their elbow against Susie’s pressure point which only earned them another raspy chuckle from the monster.
“Kris! Quit it you big rascal, I’m being serious.” She bended the human in her arms enough to reach the top of their head to ruffle their hair.
“You’re never serious.” Was all she received, along with an unpleasant yelp.
Kris characteristically rolled their eyes when they finally felt the grip around their head loosen, never vanishing from their shoulder. As the two went down what felt like a never-ending hallway, Kris couldn’t help the thought that Susie kinda stank.
“Shut up already! Is Toriel home?” Susie leaned much closer to their face, as if she finally decided she would start being more considerate of the volume she usually spoke at. Her voice lowered into a near whisper and her gaze flashed through the scenery around them like a security camera.
Kris felt a bit offended by Susie referring to their mother as if she was some sort of long time comrade of hers. By that point, they had gotten used to it. They would have to eventually accept that Susie was just like this.
“What do you want?” If Kris had to adapt to Susie’s overly comfortable and cocky personality, Susie would have to get used to Kris’s cold attitude. It only seemed fair. The two had an unsigned contract to tolerate each other’s quirks.
Susie kicked the door of the school’s main entrance open and almost threw them both flying down the front staircase of the building. “It’s a surprise. Sure you’ll love it.” The side-glare along with the sassy smirk that they got from the girl told them otherwise. It almost seemed threatening.
—
The warm summer breeze brushed the golden leaves of the trees in the town called Hometown. The calm atmosphere was worthy of admiration. Two intertwined bodies were making their way up the street. The walk home didn’t turn out to be so torturous. As much as Kris hated to admit, truth is that having a loud and unhinged personality in their life was a nice break from the monotony of their everyday routine.
Hearing the girl yap nonsense into their ear for the entirety of their promenade while they would either scoff or let out a muffled giggle under their breath was quite entertaining. That was how most of their friendship went as normal teenagers. Outside from some sort of heroes of the dark world.
Susie basically went ahead and invited herself to Kris’s home, as if they had a say in it anyway. She kept on beaming, in the worst possible meaning of the world. She looked like a goofy cartoon villain. With the image that formed into their head, Kris looked to the side to hide their grin from the girl next to them.
Susie paused whatever she was talking about and widened her eyes. “Hey! What is it?” She sounded more offended than confused. Kris only looked further away in response, they had to admit that the sight was pretty hilarious to them. Getting Susie infuriated wasn’t particularly a hard task but still, it never got old.
The shaky muffled chuckle that escaped Kris’s mouth was enough to drive the monster nuts. It was abnormal to catch Kris laughing so casually.
What was truly unexpected though was the hand that wrapped around the skimpy human’s chin and squeezed their cheeks like a little baby. Kris groaned and furrowed their eyebrows as Susie turned their head to face her. Their annoyance was quickly brushed off by a sudden wave of laughter. Both parties were surprised at the unusual reaction. Kris was sure that they caught Susie grinning triumphantly at her rare achievement.
Kris fought their way out of Susie’s arms by mindlessly pushing and slapping the body in front of them. When they were finally released, ignoring the over-confident expression planted on their best friend’s face, they rolled their eyes and begun moving forward until they were met with the sight if their home right in front of them.
They looked back to their ever so smug friend and immediately sighed and looked away when they were met with the familiar cocky smirk. They marched through the doorway without thinking much about it. They were greeted by the customary sight of their mother in the left chair of the living room.
“How was school sweetie? Sorry I couldn’t pick you up I just-“
“EVENING MS.TORIEL!!”
Even though Kris had already made their way through the living room and onto the kitchen, they could catch their mom’s voice being cut off by a thunderous yell. They didn’t even have to look back to view the scene, knowing exactly what had gone down.
As they went up the stairs, they had a moment to themselves to process what they’d been through. Sure, Susie was one weird idiot who had no sense of personal space but still, why would she consciously act like that? That was a new low even for her.
Kris sighed to themselves and entered the room, purposelessly shutting the door behind them. Not even a second went by before it was slammed back open. Kris didn’t even have the chance to completely turn around before they were yanked to the floor.
They fell on their back as Susie twisted the key on the doorknob. Before Kris could protest, the girl had placed herself next to them, grinning in an utterly horrifying way. When the human teen opened their mouth, it was left to drop in a silent gasp, eyes wide and brows furrowed, disgust and confusion washing their face as they looked at the specific artefact that sat on their best friend’s hands.
Two clumsily filled plastic bags of what seemed like a gross mixture of obscure spices. When their vision cleared up, two bags of cannabis rolls were in front of them.
“No.”
Susie let out one of her typical loud laughs but Kris couldn’t even look her in the eyes. The peculiar substance laying in front of them on the floor had their full attention.
“Oh come on Kris! You don’t know what I went through to get this shit for us, turns out that dealers aren’t prone to selling to obvious teenagers, hah!”
Kris slowly looked up and gave her an unamused look. They weren’t surprised by the whole weed situation, Susie was boneheaded enough to do stuff like this every other day. But dragging all of this to their own house without even mentioning a thing? That was getting out of hand.
“I’m telling you, this is the good stuff! One puff every once in a while isn’t anything catastrophic dude.”
Kris was about to take their eyes from the girl in front of them as they heard the words spill out of her mouth mindlessly. They shot their head back up.
“You’ve done this shit before?”
Susie threw her hands up in defense, raising her eyebrows in a dramatic manner.
“Don’t go pointing fingers now, we’ve both smoked before.”
“Cigs are completely different than fucking marijuana, Susie. We could actually get in trouble for this.”
They had leaned closer in order to control the volume of their voice whilst still being hearable. Their face had turned uncharacteristically furious. Smoking in the back of the school had become an annoying habit of theirs ever since they got close with Susie.
“You afraid of gettin’ high? Don’t worry I’m telling you, I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Kris scoffed. That didn’t sound reassuring at all. They took a look to the side to check if the door was still locked. Seeing Susie was pretty much set to do whatever she had planned, they at least had to make sure that their mom wouldn’t grow even more wary of Susie’s influence on her child.
Susie was pulling a tatty piece of paper from her jacket’s pocket. Kris rolled their eyes. They examined the girl as she repeatedly failed at aligning the dope properly on the piece of paper. Her clumsy movements made it look impossible, she seemed pathetic, yet Kris couldn’t take their eyes off of her ministrations.
Kris narrowed their eyes. Susie’s hyper focused expression changed to one of either relief or triumph as she brought the tacky blunt to her face and continuously moved her tongue back and fourth on the edge of the paper, leaving a sticky trail of spit along the length. Kris pondered for a second on where she had this experience from.
Susie fumbled with the lighter a few times before lighting the far end of the joint and taking a puff from it, exhaling smoke from both her nose and mouth as she deeply exhaled, going almost cross-eyed.
Kris watched the sight of the smoking monster in front of them, half disgusted and half curious. When Susie’s eyes refocused and caught the figure in front of her staring her way, she extended her arm forward, offering the item that sat between her two fingers.
It’s not like Kris was sensitive when it came to peer pressure, quite the opposite in fact. At that moment though, something possessed them to snatch the joint from their friend’s hand and taking a long drag from it. The bitter scent was awful, somehow even worse than that of a regular cigarette. The distress was soon replaced by the euphoric sensation of pure bliss that hit straight to their brain, causing it to go foggy.
Kris exhaled the smoke they kept in for embarrassingly long. They only realized how much time they’d been frozen for when Susie mumbled something under her breath and snatched the joint back from their hand.
It took another few moments for their eyes to focus. They gulped and reached for the joint that sat between the other party’s teeth. Fuck. The joint was starting to taste like her gruesome breath. Kris furrowed their eyebrows at the thought.
“Getting pretty comfortable, huh mr.‘We will get in trouble for this’?”
Kris didn’t even have the capacity to react, they could only focus on the thick cloud that was forming in their head, drowning all their sense of reason away.
Susie took the joint in her hands once more, groaning while taking another long drag off the thing. Kris watched with their dry mouth half-dropped. What was going on?
“Stop licking it.”
“Mhm- what?”
“The uhh. The blunt.”
“Oh right the blunt. I’m not licking… it?”
Conversing seemed to be an impossible challenge at this point. Every noise frequency just ended up sounding like a buzz.
“You love my mouth dontcha Krissie?”
Susie gave them a half-assed wink as she passed them the joint. Kris felt too out of this world to be annoyed. All they could think about was how Susie seemed alarmingly… charming? No. No no no no no no.
Lamentably, Susie, beside her high, caught in on that.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Mhm come on! What’s the problem?”
“Quit it dude. I’m just high as hell and don’t know how to function. Got a problem with that?”
Susie seemed unbothered. Good. What was that all about?
The sickening mix of chalk powder and other mysterious substances creeped their way onto Kris’ mouth, making it harder to keep a straight face. The atmosphere of the room had gotten so heavy that you could almost pierce through it with a knife. Both figuratively, given the awkward silence that fell between the two peers, and literally given the heavy layer of smoke that filled the previously neat room.
Evidently, Susie could not give a single fuck about the gawkiness of the situation as she just continued groaning to herself with each drag she took.
Kris on the other hand had been fighting an internal battle. Whatever influence the psychoactive drug had on them had been driving them nuts. There was no way in hell that their own subconscious had betrayed them into seeing Susie, goddamn SUSIE like… that. They grimaced at the thought.
“Hm. Still not used to it?”
“Huh?”
“The scent, I mean. Your face just gets all messed up, y’know?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Yeah yeah whatever dude…”
How great, another meaningless conversation followed by another wave of awkward silence. Kris took another deep drag from the joint, trying to drown their idiotic thoughts by getting even higher
Susie, being the usual dumbass that she typically is, was attempting various tricks with the smoke. How pathetic, acting like a child while quite literally smoking illegal substances. That’s right. She was a braindead dork.
The next puff that came out of their mouth was more of a sigh.
Truth is, they needed that mindlessness in their life more than anything. That brainless moron sitting in front of them had been the first person to make an effort to tolerate them in god-knows-how-long. Sure, she was silly, but that was just a pleasant contrast to their ordinarily monotonous life.
They cracked a partial smile at the thought.
“Ughhh what is it this time?” Susie shot up.
“Hm?”
“What’s up with you today? Okay, I get it, this shit is new just- you’re acting like this is your first day on earth!”
“Sorry…? I guess…?”
“Wha- I don’t want you to apologise, you freak! Just pointing it out.”
Purposely driving Susie to frustration was never a challenging task, more so, Kris was becoming an expert at it day by day. At that moment though, their throat was tied in a tight knot. They blamed it on the weed for convenience but they could still feel their heart beat faster and their skin getting warmer by the second. This truly felt dystopian.
The girl was obviously taking notice of her best bud’s body language but didn’t say anything, knowing that a conversation like that would only end up in them fighting over something as negligible as this. She averted her gaze to the side while she continued smoking from the blunt that was now halfway used.
Kris, in a futile attempt to break free of the knot that penetrated their throat, cleared said throat with a loud noise. As if the silence wasn’t awkward enough already, that sure did it.
When that didn’t work they just puffed another batch of reeking smoke from their mouth and sat there to ponder for a second. Perhaps it was the side effect of paranoia that cannabis is meant to cause but at that moment Kris just felt their sense of reason giving up completely for them to say the next abomination that cane out of their mouth.
“Y’know, I’m really glad to have you. As like… a friend or something.”
They had fully lost the damn plot by that point.
Susie sheepishly tilted her head back up to look at the human in surprise. Her pupils were unnaturally dilated while the rest of her optic area was covered in a warm redness.
“Don’t worry dude a batch of weed is not going to kill you.”
“I’m not saying it ‘cause I’m dying I just- I just really like you, right? Not a damn crime.”
“Okay. Seriously, we need to get you checked.”
“No- fuck- it’s probably just the weed but…”
A long pause, followed by a series of blinks from the girl in front of them.
“I feel like I owe it to you.”
“Owe… what?”
“Seriously?”
The only reply they received was a lost narrowing of the girl’s eyes.
“To remind you how much I like… appreciate ya or some shit.”
“Heh! You’re not half as bad yourself!”
She beamed and closed the distance between the two in order to bump their shoulders. Kris couldn’t exactly configure what was going on in that moment as their brain didn’t want to cooperate. They could not bring themselves to focus on anything other than the monster now sitting right next to them, face so close that the smoke blown from each other’s face traversed straight to the one’s opposite.
They were both leaning against Kris’s bed, their backs pressed on it’s hard wooden frame. They both had spread their legs on the floor in front of them, although the human had one leg spread out while the other was being hugged close to their body.
It was all just unbelievable. Why couldn’t they bring themselves to look away from Susie’s annoying face? Why was SHE not looking away already? Was she making this even worse on purpose by… blushing? You’ve got to be kidding.
“So…” the monster started.
“…Yeah” the human continued.
Neither of them broke eye contact. Kris, beside their high, could easily catch every micro-detail in Susie’s face, especially the obvious twitches of her skin.
“Uhm. Is this what all that was about?”
At that moment, Kris felt like throwing up. The lump in their throat had begun to feel as if they had swallowed a whole rock. Seeking to regain control of their distorted optic view, they narrowed their eyes at the girl. Her expression seemed illegible, their talent of reading anyone just by their face had been proven useless. They opened their mouth and quickly closed it again, oblivious as to what to say next.
Was marijuana commonly known for messing with people's sense of reason? There was no way in hell that at that moment Kris was seriously considering their attitude, and much worse their feelings, towards Susie. How could they be out of proper words while Susie has never in her life sat down to even consider what she says next, if her words will hurt or make someone laugh. She always speaks without filtering. Not separating her words from her thoughts - she's just so mindless all the time, so why is it that Kris was sitting there, speechless as if they'd killed a person-
''You alive over there?''
Their thoughts were interrupted by clawed fingers underneath their overgrown bangs and on their warm forehead. They abruptly shook their head back and fourth until the monster got the hint. The motion caused their hard earned half-working vision to go blurry once again. When they were finally grounded they blinked hard and snorted a little.
"Sorry."
"Damn you got lower tolerance than a dying mouse, are you really getting a fever just from smoking some weed?"
She laughed at her own words, how original. Sometimes Kris couldn't help but admire Susie's ignorance, she really lived in a world of her own. But that's why she always seems glad, isn't it? After all ignorance is bliss. They noted silently to themselves. They should be jealous, not having to live with the constant need to over analyze everything around them would be too good to be true. They had felt like that their entire lives, as if they were the only person in the entire world with an actual brain. As if they were superior and inferior at the same time.
Reasonably, they couldn't blame Susie for their internal struggles. She had done no wrong, on the contrary, ever since the two met, she's done nothing but try to make Kris feel comforted and welcome around her, even loved. And yet here they were, they still hated her because sometimes all they could do is just hate. It is so much easier than loving anyway.
It wasn't Susie's fault that even when high, the tyrannical voice in their head was still present, silently judging their every thought and move. It wasn't her fault that she made Kris doubt their own feelings. It wasn't her fault that Kris didn't know how to act around people, how to be a friend or how to love.
And yet, at that moment, Kris felt like strangling the life out of her. Maybe they were wrong and they had to finally accept that their mind was sick, that they were a messed up psychopath for wanting to watch the life slowly drain out of their only real friend's body. Were murderous tendencies also a side effect of marijuana? Of course not. As if thoughts like that hadn't been dominating Kris's mind ever since they were a child, they just learned to suppress them as they were repulsive and unnatural. Besides, they were just thoughts, nobody would ever get hurt as long as they kept such thoughts buried in the deepest parts of their twisted mind.
And at that moment, a moment where their peripherical vision had gotten particularly dark and their eyes where fixated on the figure of their best friend groaning after burning her fingertips with a nearly snuffed out joint, they could not resist the desire to tackle her and bury their fingers in her neck to watch her slowly lose the light out of her eyes.
What was so wrong with them? Why were they thinking of such disturbing thing while looking at one of their favorite people in the entire world? It was the weed. It had to be, they were just a normal teenager like everyone else in this town, they had nothing to be scared of, let alone their own self. They were still in control, sure, they resented Susie, but didn't they resent anyone that wasn't them? Or did they even resent themselves?
They were breathing heavily, what was going on? Are they having a panic attack? Did they overdose? How was that even possible? To anyone observing the scene it would definitely look as if they were going through some sort of breakdown.
"Holly shit, you alright?"
And there they were, no longer in control of anything (as if they ever where) with their brain absent from their head. Sense of vision overtaken by a mix of darkness and blurriness, sense of hearing overtaken by an acute buzzing, sense of smell overtaken by the unpleasant scent of smoke and unknown chemicals, sense of touch overtaken by an overwhelming numbness.
No, no, there was no way- how could they ever do this? They couldn't even control their own body as they felt it lean forward and onto the unsuspecting girl. They were doing it, they were strangling her, killing her. This was real, this wasn't a hallucination, it was happening, they were robbing her of her life they were-
Oh.
It only took them a few seconds to register what was happening. Their brain cleared up, their eyes focused, their ears stopped buzzing and their body stopped shaking. When their vision was restored and they weren't greeted with the sight of Susie's neck trapped underneath their hands, but with the feeling of their bodies entangled and their mouths in contact, they knew they were beyond saving.
They weren't suffocating her, they were kissing her.
It was just the weed, it was just the weed, it was just the weed-
"K-Kris...? What the actual fuck?" They were interjected by the girl pulling back. She didn't seem mad, or disgusted, or embarrassed, she just looked as if all the confusion the world had manifested into the face of a single stoned teenager.
Maybe not all the confusion in the world, as she would have to fairly share with the wide eyed human sitting in front of her with their arms still placed on her shoulders. They were the one who started this, and now they're sitting as if they'd seen a ghost? Well, that would be an understatement, as Kris was sitting in front of her with the expression of someone watching their entire life falling apart in front of their eyes.
"I- I actually have no idea what the fuck." Their face was frozen in what seemed like complete shock but could easily be interpreted as terror.
The two sat in silence for what felt like a while, the abused blunt dirtying the carpet as it slowly went extinct and it's twirling smoke faded leaving the lingering smell that both individuals had gotten accustomed to.
"You could've just talked to me, y'know? I would've listened." Susie stated while avoiding eye contact. Her hair had fallen on her face in a way that the blush plated across her cheeks was almost concealed. Kris knew better though.
"No- Susie I'm not... I don't see you... like that."
They paused for a moment to remove their hands from her shoulders, suddenly aware of the lingering position. They made sure to create some "safe" distance between the both of them but they felt their entire body twitch when they felt a much heavier, scale-y hand on their forearm, effectively stopping them from moving. Not much force was used to restrain them, but the shock that ran through their every vein when they felt the pressure on their arm was enough to freeze them in place and drive them into a shaking mess once more, they gathered up the courage to look at Susie in the eyes.
Maybe their previous sudden existential crisis was just a warm up for what was to come. Honestly, the situation at hand was worse than any sort of breakdown, physical or mental. They would rather have to force their brain to push away murderous tendencies than to force it to push away potential feelings for Susie out of all people.
And yet here they were, able to hear their heartbeat loudly, with their best friend holding onto both their hands and staring at them with wide eyes and a blushed face, with their mind under the influence of psychoactive drugs.
"You can't just act as if that never happened!"
An unamused groan was followed by an eyeroll before the human finally responded:
"Do we really have to talk about it? I told you the weed is messing with me." Kris was starting to sound overly offended in an attempt to defend themselves, even though they seemed to be somehow more upset about the situation that they caused on their own than the unwary girl.
"So... no meaning behind any of it, right?" Susie tilted her head to the side quizzingly.
"What are you talking about, of course not." Kris stuttered when trying to spit the words out, but in their eyes Susie seemed convinced so it should count as a victory for them, correct? Kris sighed in relief when their hands were freed and Susie had turned to her front, not facing them directly anymore.
It took her a few moments of searching for the blunt that had previously slipped off her hands before noticing it lying on the floor extinguished. She let out an aggrieved noise at the realization and sighed deeply, shoving her hands in the pockets of her jacket and pressing her back against the bedframe. After one or two seconds of silence she half-turned to face Kris.
"Well that's a shame. Gotta give it to you, you're a pretty good kisser." It might've came out a bit more sincere and not as smug as intended, but at that point it was the least of her worries.
Kris swallowed wrongly and almost broke into pathetic coughs when the words got to their head. They shot up and looked at Susie in startle, while she returned the look with a cocky grin. Kris figured out that like any sane person, she was just high and about to do something that she would regret when she sobered up, so they couldn't blame her.
Although when Susie turned to directly face them and brushed the stray pieces of hair off their face, letting her hand linger on their temple, Kris couldn't help but let their mouth drop even further in surprise.
"You..." Kris couldn't bring themselves to finish their sentence. They felt sort of... bewitched.
They dreadfully regretted being the one who started all this nonsense that could've easily been brushed off and left in the past to be forgotten as an embarrassing secret between the two best friends, and now Susie was dragging it? Making it even worse? Surely, the drugs had gotten to her head and swirled it around until what came of it was something far distant than what could be called Susie. She'd always go on and on about how vain and stupid dating is, how the thought of having to act 'all lovely dovey' with someone made her want to spill her guts.
And flirting? She barely even knew the meaning of the word. Susie might as well be the polar opposite of charming, sure her smug attitude and mysterious image attracted the attention of people around her but it ended there. She undoubtedly was not a people's person, any conversation between her and any sane person sounding almost threatening. With her flirting being out of the equation, what about when she's the one on the receiving end, being the one who's being hit on? Well, she never quite gets the hint, or purposefully ignores the signs just so that she doesn't feel obliged to get involved.
So what was happening? Was Kris really being hit on by Susie? The person most incapable of expressing love?
As paradoxical as it sounded, it was the only logical explanation for Susie staring deep into Kris's eyes while gently caressing the sides of their face. In fact, she was assumedly attempting to caress the sides of the human's face as the tough texture of her hands gave them an uneasy feeling, her unpolished claws dangerously close to their eyes that seemed to have lost the ability to blink.
-What?, she chuckled out when she caught the human's flabbergasted look, "come on Kris it's just the two of us, it doesn't have to mean anything." She seemed weirdly prone to doing this, has she always felt this way towards Kris? There had been signs, like how Susie constantly avoided physical touch and yelled at anyone who invaded her personal space, while with Kris she always seemed to linger to their touch, even reaching out for it more often than not, but Kris translated those acts as Susie being her unconventional and unreadable self.
There was so much they wanted to ask, to confess, to argue about, yet they found themselves relieved at Susie's words. She was right, it was just the two of them, both high as hell and besides, they already started it, what's the harm in experimenting? Maybe they could finally grapple with their complex feelings towards Susie from this experience, it could help them figure out things about themselves. Susie seemed to want this as much as they did, yet the knot in their throat resisted, not going away.
-So... it wasn't terrible?, Kris asked awkwardly. They uncomfortably furrowed their eyebrows in a questioning manner and slightly tilted the head down.
-Dude, I already told you, you're fuckin' awesome! Where'd you learn to kiss like that?, she chuckled out.
-Have you made out with a bunch of people for comparison?, Kris said, obviously sarcastically. They still couldn't take Susie seriously, even at a 'tense' moment such as this. Their attitude only helped make the situation even more awkward.
-Whatever, I can tell when it's good if I enjoy it, right?, she scoffed and mockingly raised an eyebrow at the human, good, neither of them were taking this seriously.
-You... I haven't kissed anyone before. They admitted half-heartedly, sighing and looking to the side with their eyes as the rest of their face was being held into place by two large and steady hands.
-What, and you think I have? Kris, you're the only person I've talked to in years!, she grinned, struggling to keep her reddened eyes open.
-So... should I just-, they were interjected by their face being pulled forward without them having a say in it. Before they knew it, their lips were met with those of the girl firmly holding their face. It could be described as unpleasant, neither of the two had any idea of what movements either of their mouths were typically supposed to follow. It resulted in an uncoordinated mess of faces pushing against one another, awkward sounds of muffled groaning and lips finding and leaving contact broke the silence of the room.
Kris clenched their eyes shut as tight as possible because that's what they'd seen people do in the movies. The entire time they were holding their breath in as a defensive mechanism, even though they had no idea what they were defending themselves from. Both of them kept letting out muffled sighs and sounds of m's.
In any other instance, Kris would resist, they'd pull back and exit the room without thinking twice. Although, there was something about the way Susie's skin felt against theirs that made them shiver, made them feel warm.
After a while of clumsy experimentation, the pair settled on a pattern of movements that felt proper. When said patterns started feeling repetitive, Kris took it upon themselves to act accordingly. They knew that somehow when kissing someone, your tongue is supposed to play some kind of role that in that moment they couldn't figure out, so they hesitantly pushed the tip of their tongue forward until it came into contact with Susie's dry lips.
They had no idea of what they were supposed to do with their tongue now placed awkwardly half-in and half-out of their mouth so they held it still, pausing their previous movements and letting Susie take charge. That decision was proven fatal as not even a moment later, they felt the tip of their tongue get pierced by a set of sharp teeth.
They let out a wince and pulled back, immediately putting a hand over their wounded mouth. They grimaced at the familiar metallic taste of blood that soon reached their taste buds. Susie was still holding them by either side of their head and leaned closer to examine the human's condition, looking almost guilty.
''Yeah... sorry." Was what came off her mouth after a few seconds of silence.
"Way to kill the mood." It didn't hurt like hell, they'd been through much worse, but the pain was the least of their concerns. Just as both of them had seemed to be getting the hang of it, the moment was ruined. How were they supposed to resume what they'd started now? It felt wrong. It felt like they had lost their chance.
Susie let go of their face to lean back and scratch the back of her head in perplexity, looking to her side in hopes of hiding her blushed face from the human. Kris felt an uncomfortable coldness at the spots where they'd gotten used to Susie's hands being. When the taste of their blood subsided, they could feel the bitter sent of weed in their mouth had doubled and was mixed with that of stale junk, yet they didn't cringe at the realization.
They looked up at the girl who was currently avoiding their eyes at all cost. "Don't worry about it." They paused for a moment and sighed, deeply contemplating what they were about to say next, fuck it, they were high, it was the right to speak nonsense. "...It was kinda hot, actually." They grimaced at the sound of their own words.
Susie lit up instantly. "For real?" She finally turned to face the human who quickly nodded at her, a cheeky grin planted on her abnormally red face. She scoffed and lay back, staring at Kris over her shoulder "You're a freak, Kris. We should do that more often."
"No." was the direct answer she received, even though very very deep down, Kris knew that they wanted no less than that.
When Susie caught notice of Kris's defensive attitude, she couldn't resist laughing loudly at their face and before they even got a chance to blink, Susie was taking them into a large embrace, squeezing the poor thing under her comparatively gigantic arms. When the completely unsuspecting susceptible human had the nerve to fight back, Susie just responded by squeezing them tighter and leaving multiple short kisses on the top of their head, the way someone would kiss a pet.
"Then just let me enjoy this moment, 'kay?" Despite the fighting and groaning, Kris let out a giggle against the girl's cloths and attempted to hug back, discovering that they indeed weren't as sizeable.
"Whatever, either way you can always come by and... y'know... get stoned with me, not your fault if we end up like this again." They shrugged, with their arms half-wrapping Susie's waist, they tried to lookup to face her while talking to her, their chin rested on her chest. At the moment they didn't even realize that they were... smiling?
Susie, pleased with getting what she was asking for with no much effort, managed to fall to her back, lying on the floor with her best friend on top of her. She didn't even have to use half of her core strength to lift them into her anyway.
Kris, trapped on top of her, initially tried to fight their way out but quickly gave up. Sighing and resting their full body weight on hers. The warm breeze intruding the room through the half opened window melting the too bodies together. At least that's what it felt like to an extremely tired (and high) Kris. As their eyes fluttered closed, they stopped being able to distinct their figure from Susie's, effectively becoming one. Is this what loving someone is like? Being one with them?
Susie didn't really note down the exact time the body placed on top of hers was shut down, but it didn't take long for her to succumb to slumber either. The presence of Kris atop of her giving her a sense of comfort that she hadn't felt in a while, but knew that Kris was the only one who could provide it to her with ease.
--------
A knock on the door.
How long had it been? Seconds? Minutes? Hours? It all felt the same. It felt fake. The only things that felt quite real to Kris were the bumping on their head, the growling of their stomach, the feeling of being yanked off of something and the well known knocking of their mom on the door.
"Kids? Is everything alright in there? the door seems locked-"
"Yeah yeah sure! Don't worry about a thing we're just uhh... tell her Kris!" Before their eyes even had a chance to adjust to the sudden lighting, they were being nudged on the shoulder by Susie who was currently clearing their bedroom carpet off of... what even was that?
Oh right. It was weed, they were making out with Susie while high. Kris blinked many times before finally sitting up and rubbing their face with both hands.
"We're busy. I'll talk you about it later."
"Oh okay just... take your time." Susie let out a loud 'phew; when they heard footsteps fading away, which made Kris want to punch her. Their head was killing them, their throat felt sore, they had zero idea what time it was, they had lost all balance and worst of all, their stomach felt overwhelmingly empty.
As they were about to complain about it, Susie managed to whine beforehand: "Fuck I just got the worst munchies. I swear if your mom's out of pancakes..."
"She definitely isn't." Kris responded abruptly. Then they tried to recall what had gone down before they fell asleep. When the memory revived itself after some struggle, Kris turned red. Susie, quickly noticing, thankfully addressed the matter from the viewpoint Kris was hoping.
"We... don't have to talk about it right now." She gave them a warm smile and dusted her hands clean of the weed ember that remained on her fingers, extending her now clean hand forward to lift her visually drained 'best friend' up.
Kris took her hand without thinking twice about it, giving her a short smile in return as well.
As long as they were together, they wouldn't really need a label for their complex relationship, maybe they were friends, or classmates, or partners, or spouses, or lovers... it did not matter. As long as they were them. As long as they were holding each others' hand, they were okay.
