Holding Hands

Summary:

It's a chilly day and Miyuki and Aoi are walking to their apartment after college classes. Aoi asks a question. "Could we... hold hands?"

Notes:

This was written for Yuri Shipping Olympics Bonus Round 2.
The image prompt that I used is below

This is written after the bad ending in the visual novel, where Shinichi stops Aoi from changing the world. Aoi prob would've disappeared forever but I'm the one writing this so... she's still around and going to college now

Work Text:

It was a chilly day. Not cold enough for there to be snow but cold enough that both Miyuki and Aoi wore layers of clothing to keep warm. They had finished their classes at college and were walking back to their apartment.

When Miyuki had taken a break from acting to go to college, she picked an apartment that was relatively a close walking distance to campus. She didn’t expect Aoi to be her neighbor.

It had been years since they had talked. The last time had been in high school, when Aoi had been overly blunt and outed Shinichi’s love for Miyuki and his jealousy. Miyuki had been heartbroken about the truth. It had hurt knowing that Shinichi really thought that she had eyes for anyone besides him. That was in the past, though. She had long since moved on.

Aoi was a bit of a different matter. Miyuki still found herself thinking about Aoi even after she disappeared. Although Miyuki severed her friendship with Shinichi, she hadn’t wanted to do the same to Aoi. So she was glad to meet Aoi again.

They started hanging out once more. Miyuki and Aoi had study sessions for general-ed classes that they shared. They visited each other, Miyuki bringing home-cooked meals with her after finding out that Aoi still ate abysmally. Miyuki would never escape that disgusting tomato juice brand, Yabaley’s. Aoi had cans of it in her fridge.

Somewhere along the way, they got closer than they had in high school. Miyuki didn’t want to have any regrets so she confessed to Aoi. Aoi, although a bit hesitant, accepted and they started dating.

Perhaps Miyuki had been reminiscing too much. She was on the sidewalk with Aoi, walking back home. Her breath came out in puffs in the chilly air. She turned towards Aoi, who had been abnormally quiet. Usually Aoi liked to ramble about what happened in her classes, even if nothing out of the norm occurred.

“Is everything alright?” Miyuki asked. Aoi flinched from her quiet daze. She fiddled with the sleeve of her jacket.

“Um,” she hesitated, “could we… hold hands?” Miyuki hadn’t expected that. It was true that they hadn’t held hands in public since they started dating. Miyuki thought it was embarrassing. But there was barely anyone around right now and Aoi was looking at her with big eyes. It was hard to resist.

“That’s… fine.” Miyuki held out a hand to Aoi. “Here.” Since it was chilly, she was wearing gloves.

Aoi stared at Miyuki’s hands and at her own gloved hands. She played with the edges of her gloves now. “Could we do it…raw?”

Miyuki recoiled, blushing. “D-don’t ask for that in such a weird way!” She was already taking her gloves off, though.

“Boop boop.” Aoi laughed as she took off her own gloves. They finally held hands. Miyuki thought that it felt a lot warmer and nicer than just wearing gloves. Despite the fact that Miyuki still found it embarrassing, they held hands the rest of the walk.
