Third Blood War

Summary:

This isn't really a story, it's basically a history resource on the Third Blood War, in an alternate universe where the Death Eaters won the second. I invite other writers to use this for their own works. Also obligatory I don't own the Harry Potter Franchise, JK Rowling does.

Chapter 1: A brief summary of the Third Blood War

Chapter Text

During the Battle of Hogwarts on May 2, 1998, Lord Voldemort won in a duel against Harry Potter, killing him. The Death Eaters killed most of the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore’s Army. The survivors fled Hogwarts and went into hiding. The Battle of Hogwarts was a victory for the Dark Lord, and ended the Second Blood War.

After the end of the war, several posts, including all professors at Hogwarts, were filled with Death Eaters. Dolores Umbridge was restored as Headmistress of Hogwarts. Corban Yaxley was appointed Minister for Magic. Albert Runcorn became Head of the DMLE. Corban Yaxley's brother John Yaxley became head of the DMLE’s Investigation Department. Mark Rowland succeeded Runcorn as head of the Administrative Registration Department and the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Lucius Malfoy, Antonin Dolohov, and Walden Macnair became heads of other departments. Death Eaters and collaborators filled the ranks of the DMLE, and most other departments had a lower degree of Death Eater control. Most Death Eaters became members. For five years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Voldemort reigned supreme over magical Britain. Muggles were killed for fun, muggleborns were killed, imprisoned, or enslaved. Blood traitors were persecuted as well.

Rebel groups against Voldemort’s regime began forming in the spring of 2003. They carried out low level attacks on Voldemort’s DMLE forces, whose ranks were over 1000 strong. They were initially little threat. But in April 2004, one leader of a rebel group, Mafalda Weasley, began her quest. Over the next year, she contacted other rebel groups and recruited them into a network, the Magical Liberation Army of Great Britain, with herself as the leader, and Thomas Black and Lyra Barnes as her seconds in command, and each rebel group as a troop. On April 8, 2005, Weasley led 5 troops in an assault on the Ministry. They were intercepted before reaching their target, and the ensuing Battle of London resulted in a loss for the MLAGB. However, Weasley reorganised the MLAGB and started a campaign of guerrilla warfare. This began the Third Blood War.

Over 10 months, the insurgency became more intense. Despite major losses at London and the Battle of Base Exeter, the ranks of the MLAGB grew from 100 to 120, with many former DMLE members, surviving members of the Order and DA, and muggleborn fugitives joining. The Muggleborn Foreign Legion, led by Fleur Delacour and Dennis Creevey joined the fight in January 2006. On February 3, 2006, Black led an assault on Azkaban to liberate the muggleborns imprisoned there. The Battle of Azkaban was a victory for the MLAGB, with the Dementors driven out, the small detachment of guards killed, and 500 muggleborns brought to safety in France, which had recently taken on an auxiliary role in the war. Over a hundred muggleborns chose to join the rebellion, as did many pureblood and halfblood witches and wizards with newfound faith, tripling the ranks of the MLAGB to 350. Many new troops were formed. The war became even more intense in March 2006.

The Second Battle of Hogwarts on March 30 resulted in a MLAGB victory as the school and Hogsmeade were liberated, and a new contingent of staff was installed, including Headmistress Minerva McGonagall and professors who had gone into hiding. 24 Hit Wizards and MLEP officers surrendered and were imprisoned in France. The students and Hogsmeade residents who had fought alongside the MLAGB continued to defend the school and town. The MLAGB gained many more allies.

Over the next five months, the war was at its peak intensity, and more magical settlements were liberated. The Battle of Godric’s Hollow was a minor but symbolic victory for the MLAGB. On September 4, Voldemort called a meeting of his 60 most senior followers at Malfoy Manor, guarded by a Magical Law Enforcement Patrol detail of 150. Weasley, having received intelligence on this event, ordered an attack on the Manor on that day. Using disorientation potions and enchanted firearms, four troops and the Muggleborn Foreign Legion led by Barnes stormed the Manor, killing every Death Eater and MLEP officer in sight, with only a few escaping. The Battle of Malfoy Manor was another MLAGB victory. Additionally, Lord Voldemort was killed in the battle. Barnes killed Voldemort’s last horcrux Nagini with the Sword of Gryffindor, inflicting a moment of weakness on Lord Voldemort, allowing three soldiers to gun him down. With the death of Voldemort and most of his senior followers, his forces largely lost cohesion, and most deserted or were killed or captured over the next month. The Death Eaters were disbanded, although its members continued to run the doomed Ministry.

On October 1, Weasley set out to assault the Ministry with five troops. 120 members of Yaxley’s DMLE were present to defend it. When Weasley arrived and sent a troop into the atrium, Yaxley attempted to negotiate a peace. Weasley rejected, and gave ten minutes for a surrender with the promise of survival. Twelve MLEP officers came forward and were taken away. Then Weasley’s forces entered the Ministry and began fighting to take control of it. Some levels were taken without resistance, some saw fighting. The Battle of the Ministry lasted one hour before Yaxley, Umbridge, Runcorn, Malfoy, Dolohov, Macnair, and twelve MLEP officers unconditionally surrendered in Umbridge’s office.

Weasley’s victory at the Battle of the Ministry marked the end of the Third Blood War, and of Lord Voldemort’s regime, as the last 170 members of Yaxley’s DMLE who didn’t fight in the battle ceased to put up any unified resistance. Remaining garrisons surrendered or abandoned their posts in the next few days. Weasley became the new Minister for Magic, and appointed Black as head of the DMLE, and Barnes as commander of the Magical Army of Great Britain, which was initially the only main branch of the new DMLE, replacing the Aurors and Hit-Wizards. With veterans, new recruits, and former members, Weasley began replenishing the ranks of the other DMLE subdepartments, and the Wizengamot to replace those that served Voldemort. Martial law was enforced until this was complete.

On October 8, Weasley led a parade of the troops that fought at the Battle of the Ministry, and the MLEP officers who had surrendered. She led them through Diagon Alley, Godric’s Hollow, Hogsmeade, and past Hogwarts. After the parade, she gave an address on the new state of magical Britain. On October 31, Weasley’s forces held a funeral for Harry Potter, eight and a half years after his death, 25 years after Voldemort’s first downfall.

The first actions taken by Weasley’s new government were trials of Death Eaters and their collaborators. Weasley removed the remaining Dementors from service after having Corban and John Yaxley, Umbridge, Rowland, and Runcorn subjected to the Kiss. Malfoy, Dolohov, and Macnair were executed. Wizengamot members, who had been confirmed to be collaborators, were executed. Former members of Yaxley’s DMLE were convicted of treason and given sentences of at least one to five years in Azkaban and were ordered to begin paying reparations upon release. Some were given longer or executed. Families that had owned muggleborn slaves or been involved with Voldemort were stripped of their wealth and properties as reparations. This included some families in the Sacred Twenty-One. That was the beginning of Weasley’s government’s mission to purge magical Britain of the blood purism ideology. After the trials, the Muggle-Born Rehabilitation Commission was founded, to reverse the damages done to the muggleborns.

There are 12 more MLEP garrisons, 10 of which were disbanded

Witch Watchers are attached to MLEP garrisons

Disbanded means the unit ceased to exist before the end of the war, which is considered to be the end of the Battle of the Ministry

Any units not 'disbanded' likely would have surrendered in the days following the Battle of the Ministry

Some subdepartments, such as the Improper Use of Magic Office, had no Death Eater influence

Chapter 6: Minister for Magic Mafalda Weasley's speech

Chapter Text

Seven years ago, we lived under oppression. Seven months ago, we fought for our freedom. Seven days ago, we won. After a struggle spanning three decades and three wars, the forces of good have prevailed over those of evil! The Third Blood War is over as of last week. Our country is free again. You-Know-Who is… we shouldn’t even call him that anymore! Voldemort is gone for good and those that served him are out of power. The dark cloud looming over Britain is gone. But that has brought uncertainty. To ease your concerns, I shall inform you about the near future of magical Britain.

Firstly, to ensure that the running of this country continues uninterrupted, I have taken on the responsibility, and become the new Minister for Magic. Many challenges await. Reorganising the Ministry, repairing our standing in the international magical community, and righting the wrongs of the old regime will not be easy! I have already appointed heads of departments.

In addition, from our victory over Voldemort’s forces, we have inherited a hollowed out Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Its major divisions will need new members to fill their ranks. Until that happens, this country will remain in a temporary state of martial law.

Third, from next month onward, trials will begin. Those of Voldemort’s regime who have committed crimes against the people of our country will be brought to justice! And we shall reverse the damages done to our society, especially the muggleborns returning from bondage, imprisonment, and exile.

That will be the beginning of our mission. We will rid our country of blood prejudice. It is a scourge. Three wars, countless deaths because some people think less of others with less magical ancestry. The war is over, but the crusade has only begun. If this peace is to remain, if there is to be no Fourth Blood War, the ideology of Lord Voldemort and his followers must be squashed like a bug. We will not relent, we will not waver, we will not abandon our mission.

As we go forward into this new era, let us enjoy the peace that we’ve missed, and the freedom that we fought for, and let us remember our loved ones who got to see neither peace nor freedom. And let us be reminded that this is not the restoration of the status quo.
