"GET BACK HERE YA LITTLE TWERP!!" the older kid shouts.
Grian looks behind him and, shoot, he's gaining! Grian really didn't think that the first thing that happened to him at his new school, but that kid was being so MEAN to that poor bird and it didn't DO anything to him so why was he hurting it, it wasn't FAIR.
So, obviously, Grian had to help, and it turns out middle schoolers don't like having rocks thrown at them, even when they really, really deserve it.
And, naturally, Grian didn't take the time to think of a backup plan, or even a plan because if he waited then the poor bird could have died and besides Grian can just outrun the bird-hurter, right?
Apparently, not right. Grian would have made it, he's sure of that, but unfortunately for him, he was too busy being generally panicked to notice the giant oak tree in front of him until he had ran into it.
Ouch. At least the bird got away.
The older kid has caught up to Grian now, and holds him up agaist the tree. "You're going to pay for that", he says with malice in his voice. He pulls back his fist, and Grian flinches and closes his eyes, waiting for the pain.
It never comes.
"-OW- HEY WHAT -OW- THE FU-OWWWW!!" he hears the bird-hurter shout. He looks up.
And sees the face of a boy about his age staring at him from amidst the leaves of the tree, holding a handfull of large pinecones. "C'mon up", he says. "Hurry!" Grian doesn't think twice, quickly scrambling up the tree. In no time at alll he's up, aboult halfways up where the other boy is. Now that he can see him properly, Grian realizes he has the most beautiful eyes he's ever seen, warm and deep and endlessly green. He wants to sink into those pools of green and never resurface and-- "Hello? Hello? Helloooo?" and Grian comes to the sudden realization that the green-eyed boy has been talking. "um, sorry what did you say?" he asks.
"I said, what's your name? Mines Scar, and hey how came that guy was chasing you?" Scars eyes widen, "...did you KILL someone?!?"
"My names Grian", Grian says, "an he was chasing me because um"
"Because what?"
"he was hurting a bird, he was gonna cut its WINGS off and thats not FAIR, it NEEDS those, so I threw some rocks at him, but he DESERVED it.
"Woah", Scar says, "Thats awesommme! I mean, not that he was hurting that bird, thats really bad but you stopped him!!! Hey, how come I've never seen you before?
"I just moved here, says Grian, "and yeah it is pretty cool!)
"Pretty cool?!? Its awesome! You're like a superhero! ROCK MAN: PROTECTER OF BIRDS!" Scar shouts dramatically, and Grian laughs.
Hours later, when Grian mom comes to pick up him and his siblings, she finds the two of them still in that tree
