The Dragon's Whisper

Summary:

Fiction was supposed to stay fiction. Now, she's wearing the crown of a girl doomed to fail.

Thrown into a tale not her own, she plans to rewrite it-one fire-breathing decision at a time.

Notes:

Hi! Just a small note before you read - I’m not a writer by any means. This story probably won’t be perfectly written or structured. I’ve just been a long-time, slightly obsessed reader of Rhaenyra-centric fanfictions, and one day, this idea struck me so strongly that I had to try putting it into words.

English isn’t my first language and I don't have anyone to proofread it, so please excuse any mistake.I’m open to constructive criticism, but kindly ask that you don’t leave harsh or rude comments , this is something I’m doing out of love for the character and the fact that I can't seem to get this idea out of my head. I honestly have no idea how to write a fanfic, but I hope you'll still enjoy what I’m trying to create. My fics have OP Rhaenyra and have way too much green bashing, so if you like any green character please do not read.

Thank you for giving this a chance. ❤️

Full Disclosure: When I first started writing, I was still finding my feet and used AI to help structure my ideas. While the concepts and dialogue are entirely mine, stories like this one and Blood Beneath the Crown were written with AI assistance.
I’ve since moved away from using AI for anything beyond basic grammar checks, but I want to be honest with those who prefer not to read AI influenced work. I’m keeping these stories up because the heart of the idea belongs to me, but if they aren't for you, I completely understand. All I ask is that you keep the feedback constructive.

No hate, please!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Summary:

She awoke not as herself, but as a princess bound by prophecy and flame. In a world she once read, fiction had bled into fate - and now, the game had truly begun.

Chapter Text

Maya had always imagined death would be like a slow fade - a gentle falling asleep, maybe a final sigh. But the truth was far more abrupt. One moment, the sterile beeping of hospital machines echoed in her ears, her frail body sinking into the mattress as the pain finally slipped away. The next, there was silence. No weight, no warmth. Just... nothing.

Until there was everything.

Her eyes flew open to dim, flickering light. The ceiling above her was stone - old, uneven, and unfamiliar. Shadows danced across thick walls lined with strange tapestries, and the air smelled of smoke, spice, and something ancient. She sat up with a gasp, her limbs no longer frail but unfamiliar ,stronger, heavier. Her fingers gripped at fine, embroidered sheets, her skin smooth and untouched. Her mind reeled, stomach turning.

This wasn’t a hospital.

This wasn’t her room.

And that face in the silver tray across the room- that wasn’t her face.

She forced her legs to move, trembling as she made her way to the low table across the room. Her footsteps echoed softly on the cold stone floor, and with each step, a dreadful weight settled in her chest. It wasn’t just the strangeness of the place - it was the body. The way her hips swayed. The strength in her stride. The hair brushing her arms. None of it belonged to her.

When she finally reached the table and looked down at the reflective surface, her breath caught in her throat.

The woman staring back at her wasn’t just beautiful - she was unreal. Ethereal. Skin like polished ivory, cheekbones sharp and regal, lips full, eyes large and vividly violet. And that hair - long, cascading waves of silver-blonde that shimmered in the firelight like moonlight on water.

Maya’s heart began to pound.
No. No, no, no...

She stepped back from the tray as though it might burn her.
This can’t be real. This is some dream. A morphine-induced hallucination. I’m dead - or dying - or high. Right?

But her mind betrayed her, whispering thoughts she didn’t want to believe.

Silver hair. Violet eyes. Outrageous beauty. Ancient stone walls. Tapestries with dragons.

Her stomach flipped.
No. No, don’t be stupid, Maya. This isn’t… that. You read too many damn webnovels. Those Chinese transmigration ones where modern girls wake up in someone else's body? That’s fiction. You are not in a medieval fantasy, you are not a character-

Then her eyes landed on something else.

A necklace.

It lay on the table just beside the tray, delicate yet striking - a dark, polished chain set with a gleaming red stone shaped like a dragon’s egg. Her blood ran cold.

No way.

Her fingers trembled as she reached for it. She’d seen that necklace before. Not in a dream, not in a book - in a show.
House of the Dragon.

Daemon Targaryen had given it to Rhaenyra.

Maya staggered back, her breath shallow.

“What the fuck is going on…”

She turned back toward the tray, gripping the edge of the table as if it could anchor her to reality. The face that met her gaze - flawless, commanding, almost divine , no longer looked like a stranger’s. It was hers now. No amount of denial could change that.

“This isn’t a dream,” she whispered, her voice hoarse and unfamiliar. “I’m not dead.”

She’d read enough stories to know what this meant. The signs were all there. The body, the memory loss, the out-of-time setting, the necklace. She had transmigrated. Into Rhaenyra Targaryen or at least, someone who looked frighteningly like her.
But which Rhaenyra?

Was this the show version she hated with a passion - the one where Alicent was painted as some wide-eyed, holier-than-thou victim while Rhaenyra was reduced to her passive, lovesick doormat? Or was this the book version - the one with fire in her veins, ambition in her heart, and enough cruelty to match any man who dared cross her?

She looked too young to tell for sure. The body was teenage - not yet the mother of five, not yet the Black Queen. No dragons in sight. No familiar voices. Just uncertainty.

But one thing was terrifyingly clear.

This wasn’t fiction anymore and that scared her more than anything else.
