Chapter Text
On an almost empty street, a green haired boy who clutches a battered notebook moves down the street with a gloomy look on his face thinking about the earlier encounter with the sludge villain.
‘Even All Might doesn’t believe that I can be a hero…’ Izuku clutches the remains of his torn notebook closer to his chest.
‘There’s no hope left for me to become a hero after all, Kacchan was right… I should have just given up after I found out that I was quirkless’.
As Izuku walks down the street he hears the words “I am here!” in the background, drawing his attention for a moment.
‘What was that! All Might?’’ he turns to chase that sound but freezes after a few steps forward.
‘There’s no way that was actually All Might. He would never want to talk to me after I learned his secret.’ Izuku told himself, dejected.
*Sighs ‘I should just go home. Mom is probably very worried for me at this point after taking so many detours’.
He turns away, closes his eyes, tears slowly dripping down his face as he takes a deep breath. He opens them, then continues down the road.
A few alleyways away, All Might wonders if he got the wrong location and looks around in confusion as his successor candidate unknowingly changes his fate.
Izuku opens the door to his house and turns the lights on.
“Mom! I’m home!” He calls out but there is no response.
‘Oh, mom probably isn’t home from work yet’, feeling left over tears on his face, he goes to grab tissues. Soon after, he tosses his backpack onto his chair and he sits on his bed, tucking his knees in before noticing a box that was placed on his bedside table.
Picking up the card that was on top of it, he scans over the message.
“Dear Izuku,
Recently I found that you have been much more gloomy lately. (Don’t think that your mom couldn’t notice the difference with her own son!) I may not know what has been bothering you but just know that I will always be there for you to talk to whenever you are ready. I hope this gift makes you a bit happier. You know that you always have the brightest smile! I picked this design myself! The heart in the middle shows my love for you! I hope you like it.
Love,
Mom.”
“Thanks mom” he said with a small smile. He takes the gift and opens it to find a pair of glasses with a small heart design between the lenses.
‘Should I tell her? But I don’t want to burden her…’ He sniffles.
“Maybe Kacchan was right, I don’t deserve to be a hero. I can’t even make any new friends. He is the only one I have.
I mean who wants to be friends with a quirkless nobody anyway?” He holds the glasses up to his face.
With a face full of tears, he says “At least I have you, would you be friends with me?”. He chuckles, thinking that he has gone crazy trying to talk to a pair of glasses. He buries his face closer to his body.
Suddenly, he hears a voice that isn’t his own.
“Of course! I would love to be friends with you!”
Izuku freezes, ‘Have I really gone mad that I’m hearing voices?’ Izuku slowly untucks his legs and looks toward the sound of the voice, shocked as he realizes that there is a woman standing at the foot of the bed who is holding the pair of glasses that he just dropped in a panic.
She’s wearing a skirt made of multicolored hearts as well as a white cropped vest. At first the pink-haired woman looks shocked, she re-adjusts her own glasses that's not that different from the pair she is holding, then her expression changes to an excited smile.
“Wow! What a surprise! There’s someone in this universe that can naturally see us!” She exclaims with a large smile on her face.
“Wh-what? I must be going crazy, w-who are you? How did you appear in my room? And what do you mean by ‘naturally see us’?” Izuku rapidly blurts out.
She puts her hands up in a surrendering motion, hoping to not alarm him further.
“Woah! Calm down. I mean no harm. I just came here through your glasses as I heard your voice.
It’s not everyday you find out that someone is capable of communicating with spirits, let alone see us as proved by your reaction.
If I had to guess… it’s likely due to your quirk”
Izuku takes a moment to process things as he calms down. Upon the realization of what she said, his eyes started to glow with wonder and excitement.
“You mean I have a quirk? Really? I had a quirk all this time?! Also who are you and what do you mean by spirits?” Izuku, motivated by that revelation and curiosity, starts rapid-firing questions.
“Well, first, let me introduce myself. My name is Skylar Specs and I am the spirit of Sight and Vision! Glasses are my main symbol. Spirits of existence like me control different aspects of life” she puts her hands on her hips with a proud expression on her face.
“My name is Izuku Midoriya. Wait, if you guys control parts of life, how come no one knows about you guys?”
“Wellll, spirits can’t really be seen or heard by people unless we want them to but we interact with the world somewhat regularly. A long time ago we agreed not to mess with the world too much to keep people from finding out about us”
“Why would you not want to be known?”
She then looked to the side sheepishly.
“Do you think people would feel comfortable to know that every second of their life isn’t private and there is a chance that someone could be watching them at any moment?”
“Ohhh, yeah, that would be bad.” Izuku then looks down and realizes that he should be writing all of this down.
He jumps out of bed and goes to his desk to grab another notebook and a pen. He then starts speed writing while mumbling about this new discovery.
“Oh? What are you doing?” Skylar asks.
“This will be my new quirk notebook! I want to know all about my quirk now that I have one. I want to list all the info I have for spirits in here as well” He excitedly explains.
“I’m glad that you wish to meet more of us. This will be quite fun, I would offer to tell the others but it seems like my appearance here has already attracted some attention.” Skylar said.
Izuku was about to ask what she meant by that but soon after, he felt a shiver go down his spine feeling like there are more eyes on him than the people in this room.
He shook it off as Skylar's voice cut through his thoughts.
“Then why don’t you call it… The Date-a Dex! Like a data notebook, but you're Directly Acknowledging a Thing’s Existence since you are the only one who can interact with us directly!”
Izuku stops writing for a moment. Then closes the book and writes Date-a Dex on the front cover with a small smile.
Izuku then sits on the side of his bed and Skylar sits down next to him soon after.
“Wait, then how am I supposed to register my quirk if I can’t reveal the existence of spirits?” He asked.
“Hm, maybe you could hide it as something else? Oh! Since we all usually represent an item, why don’t you call your quirk Object Channeling? You could pretend that you have the ability to make objects sentient but only you could talk to them.” Skylar replied in a small realization.
“That’s a great idea! That way I could still talk to you without looking too crazy” Izuku’s smile grew the more he talked.
Skylar smiled too at his newfound happiness.
“Well, enough about me. When I said I would be your friend, I meant it! So why don’t we get to know each other more”
Izuku looked a bit hesitant at the question but decided that he would trust her, as she just trusted him with a life altering secret.
“When I was younger I always wanted to be a hero…”
Izuku and Skylar then talked about Izuku’s childhood for the rest of the day until… The front door opened.
“Izuku! I’m home!”
